EXPERIMENT NO.3

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the moisture content of given polymeric material (PS,ABS,PP)

using moisture meter.

ABSTRACT:

The water content is with the processing of high-quality technical plastics an important
parameter for the quality of the manufactured product. The measurement should take place
fast and be simple to accomplish. Switch on the apparatus and set the alarm on. Press the
vacuum pressure button and set 50oC temperature to warm up the moisture meter. Set the
temperature according to each specimen (Polystyrene, Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and
Polypropylene). Wait for the alarm to ring. When the alarm starts ringing, record the reading
and turn off the alarm. Water and calcium hydride react with one another under hydrogen
development. Set the temperature at 50oC for 10 seconds and then release the pressure. Apply
cooling affect by pressing cooling fan button. By performing these steps, the apparatus is ready
to carry out the same experiment with other samples. Moisture in ABS is greater than that of PS
and PP with a slight difference.

INTRODUCTION:

Fig.1 Moisture meter Apparatus

This test method is used to measure the percentage of water in a given substance. This
information can be used to determine if the material is ready for use, unexpectedly wet or dry,
or otherwise in need of further inspection. Physical properties are strongly affected by moisture
content. Dimensions of material also change with moisture content. When the specimen is
introduced in the moisture meter along with the calcium hydride, the water content in the
sample is converted into steam by providing vacuum and temperature and the produced steam
react with calcium hydride to liberate hydrogen gas. The reacted steam is then recorded and
displayed on moisture meter as water content.

Given Samples:

Fig.2 Polypropylene
Fig.3 Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

Fig.4 Polystyrene
EXPERIMENTATION:
 Switch on the moisture meter and set the alarm on.
 Press the vacuum pressure button and set 50oC temperature to warm up the moisture
meter
 Set the temperature according to each specimen(Polystyrene, Acrylonitrile butadiene
styrene and Polypropylene)
 Wait for the alarm to ring.
 When the alarm starts ringing, record the reading and turn off the alarm.

 Water and calcium hydride react with one another under hydrogen development after the
following reaction equation:

CaH2 + H2O ->Ca(OH)2 + 2H2

 Set the temperature at 50oC for 10 seconds and then release the pressure.
 Apply cooling affect by pressing cooling fan button.
 By performing these steps, the apparatus is ready to carry out the same experiment with
other samples.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:

TABLE OF CALCULATIONS:
Following table illustrates the results made by this experiment

Name of Sample Mass of sample Temperature Wt. percentage Of

(g) (o C) water content
%
PS 40.04 105 0.018
ABS 40.02 130 0.021
PP 40.0 130 0.018

CONCLUSION:
 Moisture in ABS is greater than that of PS and PP with a slight difference.
 Water content measurement gives the idea of the usage of material with or without any
further processing treatment.
