The South Hams Arts Forum (SHAF)
Arts Trail is a well established annual
event that showcases an extensive range
of work created by local artists. Visitors
will have the rare opportunity to access
dozens of venues across the South Hams,
including artists’ homes and personal stu-
dios as well as galleries and other inter-
esting public venues.
This brochure features a total of 67 artists
across 27 venues exhibiting an exceptional
variety of media, technique and talent and of-
fering visitors the chance to purchase unique
pieces directly from the makers. Some artists
will also take the opportunity to practise and
demonstrate their craft in situ, so you can see
them doing what they love best.
The Arts Trail this year runs from October
12th to 27th. Please check individual venues’
opening days and hours as these may vary.

What is SHAF?
An organisation of over 100 artists work-
ing across the South Hams region. In addition
to taking part in the Arts Trail, members also
participate in a summer or winter exhibition in
Harbour House Gallery, Kingsbridge. The sum-
mer exhibition, Contemporary Passions, and
the winter exhibition, Present Maker, are well
established and receive excellent feedback.
Joining SHAF introduces artists to a network
of people with whom to meet up, share ideas
and potentially collaborate. Each artist is in-
vited to enter a profile on the SHAF website
gallery which serves as a useful promotion- NEW this year...

In his biology degrees, Nigel engaged in two very
different worlds: the infinitesimally small, as he
searched through his microscope to identify tiny
animals from the seabed, and, at the other ex-
treme, the vast expanses of the Norwegian Arctic
and the dramatic landscapes of Iceland and the
Northwest UK for his post-graduate research into
the Kittiwake. As a research biologist, Nigel devel-
oped software to connect microscope to computer.
This enabled him to develop large images of the
fabulous “deep” structures and patterns of minute
life forms previously visible solely through the mi-
croscope. He “weaves” these two dimensions to-
gether through his art:  photographs of the intricate
design of the dragonfly’s wing inspired a series of
prints; images of cross-sections of plants are the
source of recent linocuts.

relationship of microscopic detail to the vast ex-
panses of moorland; he works to uncover layers of
history, and to make visible the invisible, the forgot-
ten, the unnoticed treasure hidden in bracken by
the side of the beaten track. And always, as Nigel
says, his aim is “to express elements of feeling: it’s
more about what you feel than what you see.”
