21-22 December 2010 Environmental sustainability refers to the necessary equation between human wants and needs and the capacity of the natural systems of the earth to maintain its ecological balance. Microbiology on the other hand is the study of all organisms too small to be seen with naked eyes yet deciding the future of human race through their industrial and ecological roles in the modern world. THEMES :

The Department of Microbiology and Food Science & Technology, GITAM Institute of Science, GITAM University is organizing a seminar on the changing and all encompassing nature of microbiological studies “Microbiological Approaches to Environmental Sustainability” (MICROENVIRO2010).

About the Department :

Agricultural and Environmental Microbiology Molecular Biology and Microbial Genetics Food and Industrial Microbiology General and Medical Microbiology

It is now recognized internationally that the maintenance of human health and well being depends on sustainable environmental quality. This includes sustaining the quality of air, water and soil resources, proper management and treatment of waste water and solid wastes, and other connected hygiene and sanitation tasks. Micro organisms play a major role by contributing solutions to environmental problems through processes such as bioremediation and bioaccumulation there by degrading harmful synthetic compounds or removing metals etc from soil or water bodies. Industrialization and globalization have their impact on increasing environmental pollution, whereas microbial activities bring about the recycling of key nutrients and degradation of organic matter. There is a need for concentrated attempts to be undertaken in this field to highlight the role of microorganisms in environment maintenance and recovery. On the other hand the economic status of the country is dependent on the industrial production of various important biofertilizers, biopesticides, single cell proteins, pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals and secondary metabolites by the microorganisms. The Department of Microbiology was started in 1999 and is perpetuating as nucleus of an assortment of impressive activities. The department is endowed with qualified teaching faculty with a yearning to conquer new horizons in the field of research. The research output showed a significant spurt with the support from funding agencies like UGC, APCOST, HPCL. Presently two major and two minor research projects are being carried out. The department is committed to develop expertise in interdisciplinary innovative fields of research and to be a centre of vibrant activity that caters to the demands of society and industry.

The department also offers M.Sc. Food Science and Technology. Students of this programme gain exposure to a wide variety of fields including Post Harvesting Technology, Food Processing and Preservation Technology, Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Biotechnology, Food Engineering, Food Safety and Public Health.

This programme has been initiated based on the high demand and requirement of food technologists in modern India. The department also offers M.Phil and Ph.D where students do research under the guidance of able faculty.

The registration fee for the participants includes conference proceedings, registration kit and working lunch. The amount can be sent by a demand draft drawn in favour of Convener, MICROENVIRO-2010, GITAM University payable at Visakhapatnam.
