Engine And Pump Control System Block Diagram

The engine and pump control system continuously monitors and adjusts the engine speed and the hydraulic
pump based on machine conditions and operator selections. The control system consists of the engine and
pump control (controller), a monitor panel, various switches, sensors, relays, solenoids, lamps and alarms.

The controller communicates with the monitor panel via a data link. The monitor panel provides the
following machine system information for the operator and/or service person: warns of the occurrence of
problem(s), shows the condition and provides diagnostic and adjustment information. The monitor panel is
also used by the operator to select machine operational functions like: power mode, wiper mode, travel
speed, etc.).

Components Description
The same controller operates on different hydraulic excavators. All of the following components may not be
present on every machine. The controller (with configuration software) recognizes the machine on which it
is installed and therefore knows which components are present. For the location of components, see the
Component Location chart on the Electrical System Schematic in the machine service manual for the
machine being serviced.

Electronic circuits within the controller make decisions to change the engine speed and the hydraulic pump
outputs by controlling the governor actuator and the proportional reducing valve. The controller inputs and
outputs are connected to the machine harness wiring through two connectors, one with 24 contacts and one
with 40 contacts.

Input/Output

The data link is bidirectional, allowing the controller to receive and send information. The purpose of the
data link is to communicate with the monitor panel. The data link is not a visible component. It consists of
internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.

The controller sends information like; fuel level, engine coolant temperature and power mode selected to the
monitor panel. The controller also receives operator request information from the monitor panel like; power
mode and wiper mode selection.

Inputs

The inputs describe the status of the machine systems. Two types of inputs exist; switch type and sensor
type. Switches and harness wiring provide an open (floating) or ground to the switch inputs of the controller.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.

Sensors (frequency, PWM or voltage) and harness wiring provide a changing signal to the sensor inputs of
the controller.

Switch Input - Key Start

The key start switch input (connector contact A-13) provides input about the key start switch. When the key
start switch is ON this input is at +battery.

Switch Inputs - Operational

The operational switch inputs (connector contacts A-19, A-20, A-28, A-29, A-36, A-37, A-38, A-39, B-15,
B-17, B-18 and B-19) provide information about operator requests and machine systems. The status of the
inputs (grounded, open or +battery) tell the system conditions (normal or abnormal). These inputs receive
information from switches located within the machine systems (pressure and temperature) and operator
input switches (low idle and engine speed dial).

Switch Inputs - Harness Code

The harness code inputs (connector contacts A-12, A-22, A-32 and A-33) are used to tell the controller
which machine model it is installed on. This information is necessary because of the differences in machine
models. Engine size, idle speed, hydraulic pump type and other machine information is necessary for the
controller to make decisions. The combination of grounded or open harness code inputs determine the
harness code for each model. See the troubleshooting procedure E41 in the Testing And Adjusting section.

Sensor Input - Frequency

At the frequency sensor input (connector contact B-6), an AC signal is present to represent the speed of a
machine system. The engine speed frequency sensor provides an AC signal to the controller. The controller
measures the frequency (Hz) of the AC signals. The resulting speed is used by the controller to make
decisions.

Sensor Input - Alternator

At the alternator sensor input (connector contact B-3), a square wave signal is present to represent the speed
of the alternator. The controller measures the frequency (Hz) of the square wave signal. The controller uses
this information to make decisions and to monitor the alternator output. When an abnormal condition exists
the controller alerts the operator.

Sensor Inputs - PWM

At each PWM sensor input (connector contacts B-21, B-23 and B-24), a PWM signal is present which
represents the condition of a machine system. Temperature and position are examples of the conditions
which are monitored. PWM sensors provide this information. The controller measures the duty cycle of the
PWM signal, which represents the measured information. The controller uses this information to make
decisions and to monitor machine systems. When an abnormal condition exists the controller alerts the
operator.

Sensor Inputs - Voltage

At the voltage sensor inputs (connector contacts B-9, B-10 and B-22), a voltage is present which represents
the condition of a machine system. Level is an example of a condition which is monitored. Analog sensors
or senders provide this information. The controller measures the voltage, which represents the measured
information. The controller uses this information to make decisions and to monitor machine systems. When
an abnormal condition exists the controller alerts the operator.

Outputs

The controller responds to decisions by sending electrical signals through the various outputs. The outputs

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.

either create an action or provide information. In addition to the outputs listed in the Connector Contact
Description Charts, the three status indicators inside the controller and the monitor panel are outputs of the
controller. The monitor panel shows the operating status of the engine and pump control system and
diagnostic information.

The solenoid outputs (connector contacts A-6 through A-9, A-14, A-24 through A-27, A-35, B-1, B-2, B-13
and B-14), make it possible for the controller to cause action. This could be energizing a solenoid, sounding
an alarm or activating a motor.

Switches
Governor Backup Switch

Governor Backup Switch

The purpose of the governor backup switch is to provide a method of controlling the engine speed if the
controller stops working correctly. Putting the governor backup switch in the MAN position, overrides the
engine speed dial switch by disconnecting the governor actuator from the controller. The engine speed is
now controlled manually by activating the engine speed change switch. When the governor backup switch is
in the MAN position an A is shown in the left character position of the monitor panel display. If the
controller is operating correctly the governor backup switch should be in the AUT position.

Engine Speed Change Switch

The purpose of the engine speed change switch is to provide a method of manually controlling the engine
speed if the controller stops working correctly. The engine speed change switch is connected to the governor
actuator by the governor backup switch. The engine speed change switch is disabled when the governor
backup switch is in the AUT position.

With the engine speed change switch held in the RABBIT position, +24 DCV is applied to connector contact
4 and ground is applied to connector contact 5 of the governor actuator. This increases the engine speed.
With the engine speed change switch held in the TORTOISE position, ground is applied to connector
contact 4 and +24 DCV is applied to connector contact 5 of the governor actuator. This decreases the engine
speed.

Hydraulic Pump Backup Switch

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine(S... Page 9 of 48

Hydraulic Pump Backup Switch

Placing the pump backup switch in the TORTOISE position, disconnects the proportional reducing valve
solenoid from the controller and connects it to battery positive and through a resistor to ground. Connected
in this way, the solenoid valve will not change position. This will keep a constant power shift pressure
supplied to the hydraulic pump. In this backup mode the hydraulic pump operates continuously with a 15 to
25 percent lower output than the maximum. This is approximately equal to the output in power mode II.

When the pump backup switch is in the TORTOISE position a signal is sent to the controller. The control
then tells the monitor panel to show an H in the left character position of the monitor panel display. If the
controller is operating correctly the pump backup switch should be in the AUT position.

Engine Speed Dial Switch

350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 10 of 48

Engine Speed Dial Switch

The purpose of the engine speed dial switch is to tell the controller what speed the operator wants the engine
to operate at. The engine speed dial switch has ten positions: 1-10. In each position a unique combination of
connector contacts 2-5 are closed to contact 1. This grounds a unique combination of the engine speed dial
inputs on the controller.

Low Idle Switch

Low Idle Switch

The low idle switch is located on the top of the right control lever. During normal operation, the low idle
switch is open. When the low idle switch is pressed the switch closes, grounding the input to the controller.
Pressing the low idle switch once with no hydraulic load, reduces the engine speed. Pressing the low idle
switch again or activating the hydraulic system, returns the engine to the operating speed selected by the
operator with the engine speed dial switch.

NOTE: Pressing the low idle switch when there is a hydraulic load on the engine, has no effect on the
engine speed.

Travel And Implement Swing Pressure Switches

Travel And Implement/Swing Pressure Switches

The travel pressure switch and the implement/swing pressure switch monitor the hydraulic system and keep
the controller aware of the hydraulic demands. When there is no hydraulic demand these switches are open.
The automatic engine speed control (AEC) function of the controller uses these switches to determine how
to operate. Off the machine (on the bench), the switches are open (normally open).

Engine Oil Pressure Switch

Engine Oil Pressure Switch

During normal operation, the engine oil pressure switch is closed to ground. The switch opens when engine
oil pressure is less than the specified value for the switch. The open switch tells the controller to notify the
operator of the insufficient engine oil pressure. Off the machine (on the bench), the switch is open (normally
open).

Boom RAISE Pressure Switch

350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 12 of 48

Boom RAISE Pressure Switch

When the boom control lever is moved to the full boom RAISE position, the boom RAISE pressure switch
closes. If the power mode selected is BOOM PRIORITY, the controller activates the fine control solenoid.
This solenoid valve then causes front pump oil to go to the boom circuit only. Now the boom can move
faster, even in a combined operation of boom and stick.

Sensors
Sensors provide information (input) to the controller about changing conditions, such as speed, temperature
and fluid level. The sensor signal changes in a proportional manner to reflect the changing condition. The
type of sensor signals that the controller recognizes are:

* Frequency - The sensor produces an AC signal (sine wave or square wave) in which the frequency
(Hz) varies as the condition changes.
* Pulse width modulated (PWM) - The sensor produces a digital signal in which the duty cycle varies
as the condition changes. The frequency of this signal is constant.

350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 13 of 48

Engine Speed Sensor

The engine speed sensor is located on the flywheel housing. As gear teeth pass the end of the sensor, an AC
voltage is produced. The frequency of the voltage is proportional to the speed of the passing gear teeth. The
controller uses this signal to make hydraulic pump and engine control decisions.

Temperature Sensor - Fluids

Fluid Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor reacts to the temperature of fluids; such as hydraulic oil or engine coolant. The
sensor sends the controller a PWM signal which changes as the fluid temperature changes. The control
measures the duty cycle of the sensor signal to determine the fluid temperature.

Feedback Sensor

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 14 of 48

Feedback Sensor Inside Governor Actuator

The feedback sensor is incorporated in the governor actuator. The sensor sends a PWM signal of the
governor lever position to the controller. As the governor actuator operates, the feedback sensor changes
position. When the controller determines that the position information from the feedback sensor matches the
engine speed dial engine RPM selection, the controller stops activating the governor actuator.

Senders
Fuel Level Sender

Fuel Level Sender

The fuel level sender is attached to a float in the fuel tank. As the fuel level changes, the float inside the tank
moves, changing the resistance of the sender. As the resistance of the sender changes, the voltage at the
sender input contact of the controller changes. The controller monitors this voltage and compares it to
known values to determine the fuel level.

Fluid Temperature Sender

The fluid temperature sender is attached to the hydraulic tank or the cooling system. Temperature changes of
the fluid, change the resistance of the sender. As the resistance of the sender changes, the voltage at the
sender input contact of the controller changes. The controller monitors this voltage and compares it to
known values to determine the fluid temperature.

Monitor Panel

The monitor panel has two functions. One is to receive information about the machine systems from the
controller and to show this information with gauges, alert indicators etc. The other function is to allow the
operator and/or service person to input information to the controller like; selecting operating modes, service
modes, turning the lights ON or OFF, etc.

There are two different monitor panels. One that is used for machines equipped with work modes and one
that is used for machines NOT equipped with work modes. On the monitor panels that have a WORK key,
there is only one hidden service key. On the monitor panels that don't have a WORK key, there are two
hidden service keys. See the following illustrations.

Each monitor has three gauges and a number of alert indicators. The gauges show information like:
temperature and level, which is received from sensors or senders connected to the controller. The controller
uses the information from sensor inputs to calculate the value shown on the gauges.

Each gauge is dedicated to a parameter within a machine system. Some of the possible machine systems
parameters are: hydraulic oil temperature, engine coolant temperature and fuel level. Pictograph symbol (39)
identifies the machine system parameter that is shown on each gauge.

Alert indicators (8-14) notify the operator of an abnormal machine system condition. The controller uses
information from switches to determine when an abnormal condition is present. The controller sends a
message to the monitor panel and the monitor panel then FLASHES the alert indicator for the machine
system with the abnormal condition. For more information, see the Warning Operation section.

The information from the monitor panel keys (work, power, light etc.) is sent to and processed by the
controller. The keys are used to select various functions for the controller to perform or modes to operate in.

Governor Actuator

Governor Actuator

When the operator selects an engine speed by placing the engine speed dial in one of the ten positions
available, the controller determines if the engine is operating at the speed selected or not by checking the
engine speed with the engine speed sensor. If the engine is not operating at the selected speed the controller
activates the governor actuator which moves the governor lever. The controller uses the governor feedback
sensor to place the governor lever in a position which corresponds to the selected engine speed.

Using a cable or cables the governor actuator causes the pulley to rotate. If the pulley is rotated
counterclockwise, the governor lever connected to the pulley moves in the accelerate direction. If the pulley
is rotated clockwise, the governor lever moves in the decelerate direction.

Proportional Reducing Valve Solenoid

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 20 of 48

Proportional Reducing Valve Solenoid

The proportional reducing valve solenoid changes the electrical signal from the controller into a hydraulic
signal for the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic signal (power shift pressure) is used to regulate the hydraulic
pump output. The controller varies the current (PWM signal) to the solenoid and the solenoid valve
modulates the power shift pressure. The controller varies the current to the solenoid depending on the power
mode selected and the engine speed.

Solenoid Valves

Solenoid

The purpose of the solenoid valves is to direct the hydraulic oil flow through the hydraulic system. The
controller determines which solenoid valves to activate based on the input from the monitor panel keys
(travel speed, power mode, etc.) and the pressure switches located in the machine hydraulic system. When
activated, a solenoid receives ground from the controller.

The travel speed solenoid valve is activated when the HIGH travel speed mode is selected. This mode is
indicated by the travel speed rabbit indicator being ON.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 21 of 48

The solenoids have a connector with two contacts. One contact receives a ground signal from the
corresponding connector contact (A-26, B-1, B-2, B-7 and B-8) of the control. The other contact of the
solenoids are connected to +battery though the fuse panel.

Machines Without Work Mode

The swing power solenoid valve (connector contact B-13) is activated when power mode III is selected. This
causes pilot pressure to flow to the regulator of the swing pump, which increases the swing pump output.

When all the hydraulic control levers are in the NEUTRAL position, the bypass solenoid valves are
activated (connector contact A-26 and B-2). This allows the main pump oil to bypass the main control
valves.

Machines With Work Mode

The work mode selected, controls activation of the fine control and swing priority solenoid valves. The fine
control solenoid valve (connector contact B-7) is activated when the leveling work mode is selected. The
swing priority solenoid valve (connector contact B-8) is activated when the trenching work mode is selected.
When the boom priority work mode is selected the controller monitors the boom raise pressure switch.
When the boom control lever is put in the full boom RAISE position the boom raise pressure switch is
closed. The controller detects the switch closure and activates the fine control solenoid to assure faster boom
speed during combined boom and stick operation.

Action Lamp

(1) Action lamp.

The FLASHING of the action lamp tells the operator that a condition exists that requires changing the
operation of the machine. The controller tells the monitor panel to FLASH the action lamp whenever the
controller determines that a warning category 2 or 3 problem exists.

Action Alarm

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 22 of 48

Action Alarm

The action alarm connects to the action alarm output (connector A contact 27) of the controller. The
SOUNDING of the action alarm tells the operator to immediately shutdown the machine safely. The
controller SOUNDS the action alarm whenever a warning category 3 problem exists.

The action alarm does not operate when the engine is stopped. The controller uses functions such as: engine
oil pressure, alternator speed and engine speed to determine when the engine is running. When the controller
decides the engine is running, the action alarm SOUNDS when necessary.

Travel Alarm
The travel alarm connects to the travel alarm output (connector B contact 14) of the controller. The
SOUNDING of the travel alarm alerts the area that the machine is traveling.

The purpose of the air inlet heater relay is to turn on and off the current flow to the air inlet heater. When the
air inlet heater relay is engaged, the controller receives a +24 DCV signal at connector contact A-23. When
this connector contact is at +battery the controller knows that the air inlet heater is activated.

Auxiliary Circuit Relays

Auxiliary Circuit Relay

The auxiliary circuit relays are used by the controller to turn ON and OFF some of the wiper motors, washer
motors and lights found on the machine. The controller receives operator requests for wipers, washers and
lights from the monitor panel switches. The controller then activates or deactivates the auxiliary circuit
relays.

Engine Shutdown Relay

Engine Shutdown Relay

The engine shutdown relay is used by the controller to activate the engine shutdown solenoid. When the key
start switch is turned to the OFF position, the controller senses this at connector contact A-13. The controller

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.

then activates the engine shutdown relay through connector contact B-13. The engine shutdown relay
energizes and activates the engine shutdown solenoid, which moves the fuel rack to the CLOSE position.

Alternator

The frequency output terminal of the alternator is connected to connector contact B-3 of the controller. The
controller monitors this signal. This tells the controller the relative speed at which the alternator is rotating.
The frequency output terminal of the alternator may be labeled R, W, P or something else. The wire number
and color is usually 403-GN or D746-PK, see the Electrical System Schematic module for the machine
being serviced.

Data Link

The data link is an input and an output of the controller; at controller connector contacts A-30 and A-40. The
purpose of the data link is to allow the controller and the monitor to communicate. The data link is not a
visible component; it consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring. The data link is
bidirectional which allows the controller to receive and send information.

The controller sends information like; fuel level and engine coolant temperature to the monitor panel. The
controller also receives key panel information like; the power mode and travel speed selected by the
operator, from the monitor panel.

Normal Operation
The primary duty of the controller is to control the engine speed and the hydraulic pump output, based on
the engine speed, the POWER mode of operation selected by the operator and the load placed on the engine.
By selecting different POWER modes the operator can try to match the hydraulic pump output to the
hydraulic demand. By selecting different engine speeds the operator can try and match the amount of engine
speed to the operation. Under certain conditions, the controller operates differently. See the topic Exceptions
for additional information.

The controller also continuously monitors the condition of machine systems and alerts the operator (through
the monitor panel) of possible problems. See the topic Warning Operation.

Engine Speed Regulation

The controller processes the input from the engine speed dial. A signal is then sent from the controller to the
governor actuator. This signal causes the actuator to move the governor lever. The controller moves the
governor lever until the signal from the governor feedback sensor tells the controller that the governor lever
is positioned correctly to allow the engine to operate at the desired speed.

Exceptions
Governor Lever Control By Engine Speed

During normal conditions, the controller obtains the correct engine speed by moving the governor actuator
to a predetermined position based on the signal from the governor actuator feedback sensor.

If a problem occurs in the feedback sensor and/or its circuit and there is no hydraulic demand, the controller
uses the engine speed sensor signal. The controller moves the governor actuator until the engine speed, as
determined with the engine speed sensor, is close to the engine speed selected with the engine speed dial.
After the engine speed dial position is changed, there may be a five to ten second delay before the new
engine speed is obtained by the controller. When the engine speed is controlled in this manner, the AEC and
one touch low idle functions are overridden.

When the controller is operating in this manner, the monitor display shows L and A in the first and third

character positions respectively.

Pump Output Control With Low Hydraulic Oil Temperature

Under a normal hydraulic oil working temperature, the pump is regulated by target engine speed (under
speed control). When the hydraulic oil cannot reach a certain temperature level, the controller functions so
the pump regulation is done by a certain constant power shift pressure, not by a target engine speed. The
pump output by this constant power shift pressure is reduced two to ten percent. This could result in sluggish
machine operation. Under constant power shift pressure control, pump summation control does not function.

When the controller is operating in this manner, the monitor display shows L and b in the first and third
character positions.

POWER Mode Operation (Machines Equipped With WORK

Mode)
The controller can be operated at different engine speeds, in one of three different POWER modes.

The controller receives inputs from the engine speed dial switch, the power mode selector key and the
engine speed sensor. The controller processes these inputs and sends a signal to the proportional reducing
valve solenoid. The proportional reducing valve changes the electric signal to a hydraulic signal (power shift
pressure). The power shift pressure is used to regulate the pump output. As the power shift pressure
increases, the pump destrokes for decreased hydraulic output and if the power shift pressure decreases, the
pump upstrokes for increased hydraulic output.

Reference: For more information on flow control by pump regulator, see the Hydraulic System Systems
Operation module for the machine being serviced.

Pump output is regulated depending on the engine speed dial position. Dial position 10 causes minimum
power shift pressure for maximum allowable pump output. As the dial is turned in decreased speed
direction, the power shift pressure increases for decreased pump output.

The maximum allowable pump output is set with the power mode selector key. Power mode III provides
maximum pump output. Power mode II position provides medium pump output. Power mode I position
provides minimum pump output. The power mode selected depends on the working conditions or operation
being performed. When the engine start switch is moved to the ON position, the power mode defaults to
mode II (5).

The modes listed below represent Pump Pressure/Flow (P-Q) characteristic curves of the three power
modes. With the engine speed dial in position 10, the pump output in each mode is:

Mode III: 100 percent.

Mode II: about 85 percent.

Mode I: about 65 percent.

Mode III

Engine Speed Dial At Position 10

Power mode III is used for heavy work which needs higher operating speed. Selecting power mode III with
the engine speed dial in position 10, allows regulation of pump output through engine speed and delivery
pressure. This provides the maximum available engine horsepower for a work operation.

The electronic controller regulates the pump so the engine can maintain the target speed which results in
maximum torque and horsepower available from the engine. As a load increases on the engine, there is an
incremental decrease from no-load speed to rated speed. The rated speed provides the maximum available
horsepower. If the load further increases, the engine speed decreases below the rated speed to the target
speed. The controller regulates the pump output (increases and decreases) so the engine speed is maintained
at the target speed. At the target speed the engine provides almost the same horsepower as at the rated speed.
The engine runs at a speed close to the target speed for most of the pressure/flow points on power mode III.

The engine horsepower is used in an efficient manner for pump output even if there is a decrease in load
placed on either of the main pumps. If engine horsepower available for the main pumps decreases due to an
addition of an attachment pump or adverse conditions, the main pumps are regulated as follows:

* The main pumps are designed to allow the addition of attachment pumps. If an attachment pump is
added, the engine can maintain the target speed until a maximum of 30 percent of available engine
horsepower is used for the attachment pump. When the main pumps use the other 70 percent or more,
the target speed is maintained through main pump regulation by power shift pressure.
* If the engine horsepower decreases due to engine wear, lower grade of fuel, high altitude operation,
etc. the main pumps are electronically regulated to allow the engine to run at the target speed until the
engine horsepower decreases 30 percent.

As the engine horsepower decreases, the engine can reach the target speed at a lower pump output than that
at maximum engine horsepower. This allows the engine to operate without stalling even if there is a
maximum of 30 percent reduction in engine horsepower.

Engine Speed Dial At Position 9 Or Less

The power shift pressure remains almost constant at a selected engine speed dial position until the no-load
engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If the engine speed is decreased below this level, the power shift
pressure is increased to reduce pump output. This results in less engine horsepower being available to the
pump than at engine speed dial position 10. The pump is regulated by constant power shift pressure and
provides its output based on a certain P-Q characteristic curve.

This power mode and engine speed dial settings are used for heavy duty truck loading or trenching which
need a slightly reduced machine operating speed. Power mode III with engine speed dial at position 9
provides slightly higher power shift pressure than at position 10. This reduces pump output about ten
percent.

Mode II

Power mode II is used for ordinary work. Selection of this power mode slightly slows down machine work
speed but reduces noise level and fuel consumption, compared to mode III.

In power mode II (for 322), engine speed dial position 10 under no-load, becomes the same as that of
position 9. In power mode II (for 315), engine speed dial position 9 and 10 under no-load, become the same
as that of position 8. Other engine speed dial positions are not affected. The power available for the travel
circuits, is equivalent to that of mode III, when travel control is used alone or simultaneous with other
controls.

The power shift pressure remains almost constant at a selected engine speed dial position until the no-load
engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If decreased below this level, the power shift pressure is increased
to reduce pump output. The power shift pressure in mode II is higher than in mode III, this causes the pump
to destroke earlier than in mode III.

Mode I

Power mode I is used for light duty work which does not need high speed and power, such as leveling.
Selection of this power mode slows down work speed for improved fine control operation and reduces noise
and fuel consumption more than power mode II.

In power mode I (for 322), engine speed dial positions 8, 9 and 10 become the same as that of position 7. In
power mode I (for 315), engine speed dial position 7, 8, 9 and 10 under no-load, become the same as that of
position 6. Other engine speed dial positions are not affected. The power available for the travel circuits is
equivalent to that of power mode II or III when travel control is used alone, or simultaneous with other
controls.

The power shift pressure remains almost constant at a selected engine speed dial position of 1 to 7, until the
no-load engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If decreased below this level, the power shift pressure is
increased to reduce pump output. The power shift pressure in mode I is higher than in mode II, this causes
the pump to destroke earlier than mode II.

POWER Mode Operation (Machines NOT Equipped With WORK

The controller can be operated at different engine speeds, in one of three different POWER modes.

The controller receives inputs from the engine speed dial switch, the power mode selector key and the
engine speed sensor. The controller processes these inputs and sends a signal to the proportional reducing

valve solenoid. The proportional reducing valve changes the electric signal to a hydraulic signal (power shift
pressure). The power shift pressure is used to regulate the pump output. As the power shift pressure
decreases, the pump destrokes for decreased hydraulic output and if the power shift pressure increases, the
pump upstrokes for increased hydraulic output.

Pump output is regulated depending on the engine speed dial position. Engine speed dial position 10 causes
minimum power shift pressure for maximum allowable pump output. As the dial is turned in decreased
speed direction, the power shift pressure increases for decreased pump output. The maximum allowable
pump output is set with the power mode selector key. Power mode III provides maximum pump output.
Power mode II position provides medium pump output. Power mode I position provides minimum pump
output. The power mode selected depends on the working conditions or operation being performed. When
the engine start switch is moved to the ON position, the power mode defaults to mode II.

The output of the swing pump is also determined by the power mode selected. The swing priority solenoid is
activated and deactivated by the controller based on the power mode and the engine speed dial position. The
controller stops or starts hydraulic oil flow from the swing pilot control valve to the regulator of the swing
pump. When there is flow to the regulator the pump provides maximum output.

Power mode III is used for heavy work which needs higher operating speed. Selecting power mode III with
the engine speed dial in position 10, allows regulation of pump output through engine speed and delivery

The engine runs at a speed close to the target speed for most of the pressure/flow points on power mode III.

The engine horsepower is used in an efficient manner for pump output even if there is a decrease in load

the target speed is maintained through main pump regulation by power shift pressure.

The swing priority valve solenoid is activated so the swing pump output is maximum.

Engine Speed Dial At Position 9 Or Less

The power shift pressure remains almost constant at a selected engine speed dial position until the no-load
engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If the engine speed is decreased below this level, the power shift
pressure is decreased to reduce pump output.

Power mode III with engine speed dial at position 9
provides slightly lower power shift pressure than at position 10. This reduces pump output about ten percent.

If the engine speed dial is in position 5 or higher, the swing priority solenoid is activated. With this solenoid
activated the swing pump output is maximum.

Mode II

Power mode II is used for ordinary work. Selection of this power mode slightly slows down machine work
speed but reduces noise level and fuel consumption, compared to mode III.

In power mode II, engine speed dial position 10 under no-load, becomes the same as that of position 9.
Other engine speed dial positions are not affected. The power available for the travel circuits, is equivalent

to that of mode III, when travel control is used alone or simultaneous with other controls.

The power shift pressure remains almost constant at a selected engine speed dial position of 1 to 9, until the
no-load engine speed decreases 250 rpm or more. If decreased below this level, the power shift pressure is
decreased to reduce pump output. The power shift pressure in mode II is lower than in mode III, this causes
the pump to destroke earlier than in mode III.

Swing pump output is approximately 80 percent because the swing priority valve is not activated.

Mode I

Power mode I is used for light duty work which does not need high speed and power, such as leveling.
Selection of this power mode slows down work speed for improved fine control operation and reduces noise
and fuel consumption more than power mode II.

In power mode I, engine speed dial positions 8, 9 and 10 become the same as that of position 7. Other engine
speed dial positions are not affected. The power available for the travel circuits is equivalent to that of power
mode II or III when travel control is used alone, or simultaneous with other controls.

Swing pump output is approximately 80 percent because the swing priority valve is not activated. When the
swing control is used simultaneously with other controls, the main pump output is regulated in the same
manner as in power mode II.

One Touch Low Idle (Machines Equipped With WORK Mode)

The controller continuously monitors the travel and implement swing pressure switches. These switches are
monitored to determine the hydraulic demand. One or both of the switches closes when the hydraulics are in
use. When the low idle switch is pressed, the controller checks the pressure switch inputs to determine the
hydraulic demand. If there is no demand, the controller activates the low idle system which adjusts the
engine RPM to the equivalent of engine speed dial position 2. The low idle system overrides the automatic
engine speed control (AEC) system.

When the low idle switch is pressed again, the engine speed recovers as follows:

* If the engine speed dial is at position (4 or less for 322, or 3 or less for 315), the engine speed
returns to the original dial setting.
* If the engine speed dial is at position (5 or higher for 322, or 4 or higher for 315) with automatic
engine speed control ON, the engine speed returns to 1300 rpm.
* If the engine speed dial is placed at position 5 or higher with automatic engine speed control OFF,
the engine speed returns to a speed 100 rpm lower than the original dial setting.

Activation of any hydraulic control, deactivates the low idle system and returns engine speed to the original
engine speed dial setting, or the power mode setting if power mode I or II is selected. Once low idle system
is deactivated, it is necessary to press the low idle switch again to activate the system.

hydraulic demand. If there is no demand, the controller activates the low idle system which adjusts the
engine RPM to approximately 950 rpm. The low idle system overrides the automatic engine speed control
(AEC) system.

When the low idle switch is pressed again, the engine speed recovers as follows:

the engine speed returns to a speed 100 rpm lower than the original dial setting.

Activation of any hydraulic control, deactivates the low idle system and returns engine speed to the original
engine speed dial setting, or the power mode setting if power mode I or II is selected. Once low idle system
is deactivated, it is necessary to press the low idle switch again to activate the system.

Automatic Engine Control (AEC) Mode Operation (Machines

Equipped With WORK Mode)
When there is little or no hydraulic load the AEC portion of the controller reduces the engine speed to
reduce the operating noise and conserve fuel. The AEC operates in two modes. The modes are selected by
turning AEC ON or OFF using AEC selector key on the monitor panel. The two modes of operation are
described below.

With AEC ON: When hydraulic load changes from heavy to continuous light for ten seconds and the engine
speed dial is at position 5 or higher for 322, or position 4 or higher for 315, the AEC system reduces the
engine speed by 100 rpm. When hydraulic load changes from heavy or continuous light to none for three
seconds and the engine speed dial is at position 5 or higher for 322, or position 4 or higher for 315, the AEC
system reduces the engine speed to 1300 rpm. If the hydraulic system is activated past a load level, the
engine speed returns to the engine speed dial setting.

With AEC OFF: When hydraulic load changes from heavy to continuous light for ten seconds or none for
three seconds and the engine speed dial is at position 5 or higher for 322, or position 4 or higher for 315, the
AEC system reduces the engine speed by 100 rpm. When hydraulic load changes from continuous light to
none for three seconds and the engine speed dial is at position 5 or higher, the AEC system reduces the
engine speed to 100 rpm below the no load engine speed setting.

Reference: For more information on AEC operation, see the topic Pilot Circuit in the Hydraulic System
Systems Operation module for the machine being serviced.

Automatic Engine Control (AEC) Mode Operation (Machines NOT

Equipped With WORK Mode)
When there is little or no hydraulic load the AEC portion of the controller reduces the engine speed to
reduce the operating noise and conserve fuel. The AEC operates in two modes. The modes are selected by
turning AEC ON or OFF using AEC selector key on the monitor panel. The two modes of operation are
described below.

With AEC ON: When hydraulic load changes from heavy to continuous light for ten seconds and the engine

load changes from heavy or continuous light to none for three seconds and the engine speed dial is at
position 6 or higher, the AEC system reduces the engine speed to 1300 rpm. If the hydraulic system is
activated past a load level, the engine speed returns to the engine speed dial setting.

With AEC OFF: When hydraulic load changes from heavy to continuous light for ten seconds or none for
three seconds and the engine speed dial is at position 6 or higher, the AEC system reduces the engine speed

by 100 rpm. When hydraulic load changes from continuous light to none for three seconds and the engine

the no load engine speed setting.

Additional Functions
The controller also performs the following functions in addition to normal operation. For each of the
following functions the keys on the monitor panel are used to make selections. The monitor sends this
information to the controller which then activates relays or solenoids to perform the function.

Work Mode (Machines So Equipped)

The WORK key is used to select one of three work modes; BOOM priority, SWING priority and FINE
control. The work mode selected, controls activation of the fine control and swing priority solenoid valves.
The controller activates the fine control solenoid valve when the leveling work mode is selected. The swing
priority solenoid valve is activated when the trenching work mode is selected. When the boom priority work
mode is selected the controller monitors the boom raise pressure switch. When the boom control lever is put
in the full boom RAISE position the boom raise pressure switch is closed. The controller detects the switch
closure and activates the fine control solenoid to assure faster boom speed during combined boom and stick
operation.

Travel Speed

The TRAVEL SPEED key is used to select one of two travel speeds; HIGH and LOW. When the HIGH
travel speed is selected, the controller activates the travel speed solenoid, which causes travel speed to
increase depending on the travel load. Selection of LOW travel speed deactivates the travel speed solenoid,
which causes the travel speed to decrease.

Reference: For more information, see the topics Trenching Operation, Leveling Operation, Pilot Circuit and
Travel Control in the Hydraulic System Systems Operation module for the machine being serviced.

Lights

The LIGHT key is used to select one of three different lighting options. When indicator 1 is ON, the
controller activates the chassis light relay turning ON the chassis light. When indicator 2 is ON, the
controller activates both the chassis and boom light relays turning both the chassis and boom lights ON.
When both indicators 1 and 2 are OFF, the relays are not activated so no lights are ON.

Wipers

The WIPER key is used to select one of three different wiper options. When indicator lamp 1 is ON, the
controller activates the wiper relay intermittently causing the wiper to operate intermittently. When indicator
lamp 2 is ON, the controller activates the wiper relay continuously causing the wiper to operate. When both
indicators 1 and 2 are OFF, the relay is not activated so the wiper is stopped.

Washer

The WASHER key is used to turn ON the washer pump and the wiper. When the WASHER key is pressed
the controller activates the washer and the wiper relays. When the key is released, the washer relay is
deactivated and the wiper relay is deactivated approximately three seconds later.

Backup System

The electronic controller has an operator activated backup system to allow operation of the pump and/or

engine in case of electronic control system problems. The backup system consists of the governor backup to
control the engine and the pump backup for pump control. The governor backup should be activated when a
problem occurs in the electronic control system that controls the engine governor. The pump backup should
be activated when a problem occurs in the electronic control system that controls the pump. During backup,
pump output is equivalent to that of machine operation in power mode I or II. When the controller is normal,
the governor backup switch and the pump backup switch should be in AUT position.

During governor backup operation, the monitor display shows:

[A ]; when the governor backup is used alone.

NOTE: The same information is shown when problems occur in the governor actuator harness. Use extra
care not to mistake this for a backup mode indication.

During pump backup operation, the monitor display shows:

[H ]; when the pump backup is used alone.

When the governor backup and the pump backup operations are used together, the monitor display shows:

[U ]; when both pump and governor backups are used simultaneously.

Service Operations
Introduction
The monitor panel activates and displays the output received from the controller. There are two Service
Operations modes; Data Mode and Calibration Mode. Each mode has a particular function as follows:

Data Mode

This service operation mode contains eight different functions and provides the necessary information for
the service person to determine the machine condition. The data mode is also used to assist in
troubleshooting machine problems.

Calibration Mode

This service operation mode contains ten different functions and provides information used to adjust and
confirm system/component operation after replacement of electronic control system components. The
calibration mode is also used to assist in troubleshooting machine problems.

NOTE: If the governor or pump backup switches are not in the AUT position these service operation modes
will not operate correctly. If the following characters are shown on the monitor display, check the position
of the backup switches.

[A ]; when governor backup switch is in the MAN position.

NOTE: The same information is shown when problems occur in the governor actuator harness. Use extra
care not to mistake this for a backup mode indication.

[H ]; when pump backup switch is in the TORTOISE position.

[U ]; when both pump and governor backup switches are in the TORTOISE and MAN positions.

the error codes for problems that exist now (present). They are displayed in an increasing number sequence.
in a repetitious manner. Each error code is shown for two seconds with a blank display shown for one
second between each code. For a list of the possible error codes, see the topic Troubleshooting Detected
Faults in the Testing And Adjusting section.

NOTE: An error code of E00, indicates that there are no system errors.

Digital Input

When this function is selected, travel speed LOW (TORTOISE) indicator FLASHES. This function shows
21 types of information (ports 0-P) on the character display. As each port is selected the monitor display will
show the status of the corresponding controller switch inputs.

When the port for a switch input is selected the display will show the port number in the left most character
position and [ On] or [ oF] in the right two positions. [ On] is shown if the corresponding controller input is
grounded. [ oF] is shown if the corresponding controller input is open.

When port 0 is selected the monitor display shows a number that corresponds to status (grounded or open) of
the harness code inputs. When port 1 is selected the monitor display shows a number that corresponds to
status (grounded or open) of the engine speed dial switch inputs.

To select the different information to have shown on the display:

Press and hold the ALARM CANCEL key, then press the POWER key until travel speed LOW
(TORTOISE) indicator flashes. Release the keys. The character display will show 010. The character in the

Entering And Exiting Calibration Mode

To Enter Calibration Mode:

NOTICE
Before the start of the calibration mode, the engine speed dial switch
should be set at dial position 1 and the key start switch must be in the
OFF position.

Press and hold the service I key while starting the engine or turning the key start switch to ON. As shown in
the chart above, the engine does not need to be started to obtain information for certain functions. Continue
to hold the service I key until the action lamp turns ON. All the alert indicators should be OFF.

Calibration mode is now activated and the character display will show the first function value (machine and
engine model numbers). The action lamp remains ON during calibration mode.

NOTE: Activation of the calibration mode overrides the AEC function and keeps the power shift pressure
constant at a pressure level equivalent to a no-load condition. Calibration mode also overrides the function
of the gauges, the action lamp and the alert indicators. The engine speed dial switch works normally.

To Exit Calibration Mode

Use either of the following two methods:

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 42 of 48

Press and hold the service I key for at least two seconds or until the engine speed dial position is shown on
the character display.

Calibration Mode can also be exited by turning the key start switch to the OFF position.

Machine And Engine Model

To select this function, press the POWER key one to three times to turn ON the POWER III indicator. The
character display shows the machine engine and model information.

The left most two character positions represent the code for the model of excavator. The right position
represents the code for the excavator configuration (backhoe or front shovel) or the model of engine. For a
322 excavator [22C] is shown.

NOTE: When calibration mode is entered, this function is automatically accessed.

Controller/Monitor Software Version

To select this function, press the POWER key one to three times to turn ON the POWER II indicator. The
character display shows the machine engine and model information.

The left most two character positions represent the code for the software version. The letter C is shown in
the right position. The C represents the code for the controller.

Pressing the AEC key toggles the display to show the software version of the monitor. Now a different code
is shown in the left positions and a P is shown in the right. The P represents the monitor.

An example of software versions may be [00C] and [20P].

NOTE: Each time the AEC key is pressed, the display will alternate between the two software codes [00C]
and [20P].

Error Log

To select this function, press the POWER key one to three times to turn ON the POWER I indicator. The
character display shows the [Hd ]. This indicates that the list of stored error codes can be viewed. The
controller continuously monitors the engine and pump control system for problems during machine
operation. If any problems (continuous or intermittent) are detected the controller stores the appropriate
error code. The list of error codes is stored until cleared.

The error codes can be shown in either ascending or descending order. Each time the AEC key is pressed, a
sequential list of error codes in ascending order is shown on the display. Example:

[Hd ]

[F 6]

[F10]

[F40]

[F41]

[End]

Each time the WASHER key is pressed, a sequential list of error codes in descending order is shown on the
display. Example:

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.

[End]

[F41]

[F40]

[F10]

[F 6]

[Hd ]

To clear the error codes from the error log, push and hold the AEC key then the POWER key, then the
TRAVEL SPEED key. Do not release any keys until [CLr] is shown on the display. After the error log is
cleared the display shows [Hd ]. Always clear the error log after the problems have been corrected.

Reference: These error codes are the same as the real time error codes, except that the real time codes have
an E instead an F. For a listing of error codes, see the topic Data Mode, Real Time Error.

NOTE: The following error codes are not logged by the controller:

F1 to F5, F7, F9, F12, F15, F32, F34, F37, F38, F39, and F48.

Digital Output Test

To select this function, press the LIGHT key once or twice to turn ON the LIGHT 1 indicator. The character
display shows [0oF]. This indicates that the output 0 is OFF. There are 16 outputs on the controller that can
be turned ON or OFF using this function. Some of these outputs are connected to various relays, solenoids
and alarms, the others are spares. This function allows the service person to turn these components ON or
OFF.

The character in the left most position of the display is a code that represents an output of the controller. See
the chart that follows to match the controller connector contact to the output code. The Electrical System
Schematic for the machine being serviced must be used to match the controller connector contact to a
component.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 44 of 48

The outputs can be shown in either ascending or descending order. Each time the AEC key is pressed, the
list of outputs in ascending order is shown on the display. Each time the WASHER key is pressed, the list of
outputs in descending order is shown on the display.

When the desired output is shown on the display, press the ALARM CANCEL key to turn the output ON or
OFF. The display will show the output code and the status (ex. [0On] or [0oF]). If the display shows [0Er]
instead of [0On], this indicates that the output circuitry (harness or component) has a problem.

Proportional Reducing Valve Sweep Test

To select this function, press the LIGHT key once or twice to turn ON the LIGHT 2 indicator. The character
display shows [P 0]. This indicates that the proportional reducing valve and solenoid are being tested.
During this test the display will change from [P 0] to [P32] and back to [P 0]. This takes approximately five
seconds.

The purpose of this function is to check whether the proportional reducing valve is activating with a change
in the signal from the controller. For more information on this function, see the topic Proportional Reducing
Valve Sweep Test in the Testing And Adjusting section.

Engine Speed Change

NOTE: Engine must be running for this function to operate correctly.

To select this function, press the WIPER key once or twice to turn ON the WIPER 1 indicator. The character
display shows the engine speed dial setting engine RPM. The display shows the RPM without the ones digit,
so 1840 rpm is shown as [184]. If the speed is increased 10 rpm the display shows [185].

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 45 of 48

This function is useful for setting the no load engine speed to a speed other than the engine speed dial
setting. Start by selecting an engine speed dial position that sets the engine RPM closest to the engine speed
desired. Each time the AEC key is pressed, the engine speed increases. When the WASHER key is pressed,
the engine speed decreases.

Fixed Power Shift Pressure

NOTE: Engine must be running for this function to operate correctly.

To select this function, press the WIPER key once or twice to turn ON the WIPER 2 indicator. The character
display shows a code that corresponds to a power shift pressure. The power shift pressure can be changed by
pressing the AEC key to increase the pressure, or press the WASHER key to decrease the pressure. See the
following chart to match the code shown on the display to the power shift pressure.

This function allows the power shift pressure to be set to a constant level. The constant power shift pressure
is necessary to allow some testing and adjusting procedures to be performed.

NOTE: Pressing the ALARM CANCEL key toggles the display alternately showing the power shift
pressure and the engine rpm. The display shows the RPM without the ones digit, so 1840 rpm is shown as
[184].

Engine Speed Dial Setting Check

To select this function, press the TRAVEL SPEED key once or twice to turn ON the TRAVEL SPEED
RABBIT indicator. The character display shows the engine RPM that corresponds to the engine speed dial
position selected. The display shows the RPM without the ones digit, so 1840 rpm is shown as [184]. If the
speed is increased 10 rpm the display shows [185].

For the proper engine RPM at for engine speed dial position, refer to the following chart. If the machine

(1) Action alarm. (2) Fuel level gauge. (3) Character display. (4) Engine coolant temperature gauge. (5) Hydraulic oil temperature
gauge. (6) Alternator alert indicator. (7) Engine coolant temperature alert indicator. (8) Hydraulic oil temperature alert indicator.
(9) Engine oil pressure alert indicator. (10) Controller alert indicator. (11) Monitor alert indicator.

NOTE: For a complete explanation of each alert indicator, see the Operation And Maintenance Manual for
the machine being serviced.

The controller, through the monitor panel, notifies the operator of an immediate or impending problem with
a machine system. Warning operation begins when the controller receives a problem signal that reflects an
abnormal machine condition. Switches and sensors provide signals to the controller. The problem signals
are:

* An open switch. When a condition exceeds the trip point of the switch, the switch opens.
* A sensor signal which exceeds the limits. The controller determines the limits.

The controller analyzes the problem signals and tells the monitor panel to activate the appropriate warning
indication to notify the operator. The warning indications are:

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sis... 13.10.2014.
350 & 350 L Excavators 9FL00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3306 Engine... Page 48 of 48

* FLASHING of the alert indicator.

* FLASHING of the action lamp.
* SOUNDING of the action alarm (ON one second, OFF two seconds).

NOTE: In order to activate some warning indications more than one input is required. The controller
decides when and what warning indications are activated.

Machine system problems are classified into three warning categories: 1, 2 and 3. The categories are based
on how severe the problem is and dictate the required response of the operator. Warning category 1
represents the least severe problem and warning category 3 represents the most severe problem. The warning
categories are identified for the operator according to the combination of warning indications that are active.
See the Warning Operation chart.
