Ask yourself the following questions several times throughout the school year. Key: A = Always S = Sometimes N = Never
Do I . . .
make sure my child has a good night's sleep and eats properly? make sure my child gets to school on time? make sure my child has a set time and a quiet place to study each day? make sure my child does his/her homework each day? talk to my child about taking responsibility for his/her own actions? listen to my child and teach him/her to listen to others? teach my child self-respect and respect for others? remind my child to be well-behaved in school? teach my child that he/she represents the family away from home? read aloud to my child and/or listen to my child read? talk to my child in complete sentences and answer questions? know how my child is performing in reading and mathematics? control the quality and length of TV programs my child watches? provide books in my home and/or take my child to the library? expose my child to a variety of educational experiences? let my child see me read? talk to my child each day about what he/she learned at school? express a positive attitude towards school? smile, and hug and praise my child often? attend parent meetings? contact my child's teacher on a regular basis to find out how he/she is progressing? attend special events or programs with my child? tell my child that getting a good education is very important?
