FADE IN

1. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - DAY

A "TABLE" (two rubbish bins with a wooden plank connecting)

stands with a WEIRD CONTRAPTION on it. A young MAN with a
too-weathered-for-his-age face stands in front of it, tightly
screwing in a screw while whistling "CRUEL WORLD" (by RED
SAGE). He's AUSTIN BIGGS, 19.

The contraption looks to be a RADIO. A scrappy one, but one

nonetheless. It's on the center of the table. And is the only
thing on the table, save for: an old, bloody ROUNDERS BAT, an

aged TEDDY BEAR, and a PHOTOGRAPH with a man, woman, Austin,
and a younger child. They're all smiling and the youngest is
holding a rounders bat. It's Austin's family.

Next to the table are some COOLERS and some organized stacks
of CARDBOARD BOXES. Some are open, some are closed, all are
worn. Some have fading text on the side, saying things like
"TOOLS", "AUSTIN", "PLATES", and one with a large RED SLASH.

The uniform handwriting suggests they were all labeled by one

person.

On a nearby WALL is a CALENDAR with various dates circled or

x'ed out; NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS with headlines such as "NUCLEAR
WAR IMMINENT", "PREPARE YOUR BUNKERS", "NOT A DRILL, ATTACKS
ARE NEAR"; handwritten notes, including ones saying,
"NOCTURNAL!", "ESCAPE ROUTE", and "CLAWS"; hand drawn
pictures that look like a child made them; and a map of the
UK with a small circle that has "SAFE ZONE" written inside
with familiar handwriting.

The "SAFE ZONE" circle encompasses a lake.

There's a handful of other circles scattered around with

"NEST?" or "SURVIVOR?" labels.

Austin continues his whistling. In his hand looks to be a

MICROPHONE for the radio. It's separated from its MIC STAND.

AUSTIN
Screw.

Austin holds his hand out. Then picks up a screw.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Thanks.

He screws the stand onto the microphone.

(CONT'D)
2.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Take this.

He hands the screwdriver to a TEDDY BEAR (drops it in front

of it).

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Thank you.

Austin holds the microphone proudly in his hand.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Alright! 10 quid says this works.

He flicks a switch, turns the radio on.

A BUZZING. STATIC…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(into the microphone)
Hello?
(beat)
Hello this is Austin-

…that quickly fades.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Huh?

He taps the side of the device. Talks into the microphone.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hello? Hello?

He looks at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
You heard that, right? The
buzzing?… It was working? Right?

Back to the radio. Gives it a tap.

The buzz comes back temporarily…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
There there there-

…but quickly disappears.

A moment to take it in. Then:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Fuck!
3.

He forcefully THROWS the microphone away and puts his head in

his hands. He hears a BANG. A BOOM. Looks over to his side.

On the floor is his family photograph.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Oh shit.

He frantically walks over to it, checks for cracks in the

glass.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Please no. No no no.

Nothing. No cracks. A BIG SIGH of relief.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Whew!

He puts the framed photograph back on the table, making sure

it's nowhere near the edge.

He turns around, sees the bear. And starts chuckling in

relief.

2. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin, tightly wrapped head to toe in his covers, wakes up

in what looks to be a "bed"- a large BOX with a BLANKET and
PILLOW inside.

It's situated opposite his "central base". Clutched tightly

against his chest is the bear, a small BANDANNA wrapped
around its eyes. On the ground, his rounders bat.

The sun beats down on him.

He stirs, beginning to wake. Takes HIS BANDANNA off his eyes.

Like a habit, Austin opens only one eye. It's sunny. Opens
his other eye, CAREFULLY.

It's still sunny. He lets go of his bear and gently crawls

out of his bed. Stretches. Smiles at his bear.

AUSTIN
G'mornin' champ. How'd you slee-

He notices the bandanna. Pulls it off the bear as he picks it

up.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Whatever we can to survive, right?
4.

Austin walks over to a cooler. Opens it.

Inside are FOUR GRANOLA BARS. Austin lets out a deep breath-
this shit again -and takes a bar out.

Looks at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I know, they get tired after the
thousandth one, but can you please
just take, like, a bite for me?

Austin takes a beat before playing it off as a joke.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
No?… Fine… But if your stomach
starts hurting, that's on you.

He closes the cooler.

Austin puts his bandanna on the table with the bear. He puts
the granola bar in his mouth and walks to a large bucket with
a cover on it.

He starts to take his shirt off as he uncovers the bucket,

revealing some SOAP SUDS, LEAVES, BITS OF HAIR, MUD and a
WASHCLOTH inside.

But nothing else. Austin looks in, sees the emptiness.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(to himself)
UGGGHHHHH.
(beat)
Alright.

He grabs what water and mud remains and slicks back the side
of his hair.

Puts his shirt back on and walks to the calendar on the

board. Circles today's date- AUG 14- and writes "WATER
REFILL". Puts the sharpie down and walks to the boxes.

August 10th is also circled. It also says "WATER REFILL". And
it also says "3 TRIPS".

Austin grabs a large BACKPACK sitting in front of the boxes.

Goes to a different cooler and takes out 2 EMPTY LITRE JUGS.

He puts them in his backpack and puts his backpack on.

Austin looks at the bear.

(CONT'D)
5.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I'm going to need you to stay here
and watch fort Where Are The Ladies
bud.

Austin chuckles at his joke.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
One day you're gonna appreciate
that. I'm counting on you. Don't
let us down.

Austin grabs his bandanna, puts it around his head. Grabs

another bandanna, puts it around the bear's head.
Be safe.
AUSTIN (CONT'D)

Austin starts walking away. Abruptly stops as if someone

yelled something to him.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Oh! Yeah… yeah, the bat, the bat.
You're right.

And walks to grab the bat. Flips it, gets in a batter's

stance.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
And now up to bat, number 9,
Austin… BIGGS! Yeah! And the crowd
goes wild!
(points at the bear)
Yeah! The people go crazy!
(beat, to himself)
If there were people.

3. EXT. LAKE - DAY

Austin sits at the edge of a small lake, whistling Cruel

World. A forest surrounds him.

He pulls out a now-full jug from the lake depths. It's full
of murky lake water.

Austin examines it. Caps it. Puts it in his backpack and

takes out the other jug.

He dunks that one, filling it too with the dirty water.

Looks, nods, caps it too and puts it in the backpack.

Austin looks at the lake. Stops moving, stops whistling,

listens carefully.
6.

He hears nothing.

And no thing.

He slowly grabs his shirt like he's going to take it off

again and starts scanning around with his eyes, careful not
to look at one place for too long.

Until he sees something on the bark of a tree. He quickly

looks away and pulls his bandanna down.

AUSTIN
Huh?

He puts his shirt down as he stands up. He grabs his rounders
bat and walks carefully towards the tree, peaking at the
ground to see where he's going.

Austin reaches the tree. Looks around at its base. Reveals

his eyes and looks at the trunk.

There's… blood? Saliva? A weird blueish, reddish goo drips

from it. Austin rubs his finger in the goo. Takes a sniff.
Recoils back- it smells like rotten eggs and death.

He wipes it back on the tree.

A RUSTLING in the forest. Austin instinctively closes his

eyes and pulls the bandanna over his eyes.

Hears it again. To his left this time. Looks over. Peaks one
eye open. Carefully. Sees nothing.

Without much conviction, just to calm himself:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Squirrels. Definitely squirrels.
(beat)
Bastards.

Starts walking backwards, still looking at the source of the

sound.

Austin backs into something.

He turns, closes his eyes, and BASHES the thing with the
cricket bat.

The bat splinters and breaks into two. Because Austin just
attacked a TREE.

He opens his eyes and looks at the half a bat in his hand
with his mouth agape.
7.

4. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - DAY

Austin walks urgently to the boxes. He sets the bat pieces on

the table and drops his backpack on the ground.

He starts rummaging through the boxes. Despite the organized

exterior, the insides are a mess.

First, the "TOOLS" box. There's tools, but not the thing he's
looking for.

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Duct tape… Duct tape…

Austin puts the box to his left. He checks another box. Still
nothing.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(to himself)
Where are ya?

Puts it to his left. Checks another. Still not what he's

searching for.

Austin sees the box with the red slash.

He gazes at it.

Thinking.

As it looks back.

He carefully moves it out of the way and to his right.

He looks over to the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Did you use all the duct tape
again?

It looks back, its bandanna on the table.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Uh… is that a yes or…?

A long stare.

Austin shakes his head.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I told you, don't use what isn't
yours. That's not how you survive…
8.

He dives back into another box. The "PLATES" box. Austin

finds a large STEAK KNIFE.

5. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin's sitting in the middle his compound, whittling a

sharp point onto the broken end of half the cricket bat. The
bear sits next to him.

AUSTIN
How far you think you can hit a
ball with this now?
(beat)
300 metres max, it's missing the
tip. What do you think?

Austin gives a chuckle.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
5,000 metres? You're fucking crazy.
(beat)
Fine, 10,000 metres!

He laughs at his joke as he gets the bat to a nice point,

blows the dust away, examines it. Nods his head approvingly.
Whittles some more.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Outrageous! It's not even
regulation any-

BEEP! BEEP! An ALARM. From his watch. Austin checks it.

SIGHS. Checks the sky.

It's not quite nighttime, but apparently it's late enough.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hmph.

He grabs the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)

Time for bed, bud.
(beat)
I know it's early! I knoooooowwwww.
That's just life. It's as… uh… psh…
you know it's better to be safe…
Um… Better to be safe…

His family photo looks back from the table.

Austin looks at the radio. SIGHS and looks at the bear.

9.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
One day.

Smiles.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
One day we'll find others.

A beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
One day we'll find a family again,
huh?

He takes the whittled half of the bat and his bear and walks
towards his makeshift bed.

He sets his bat down and makes himself comfortable. He holds

the bear close to his chest as he covers himself.

Covers his eyes with the bandanna. Covers the bear's eyes
with a bandanna.

He's difficult to see from afar. But with covered eyes, it's
also difficult for him to see out.

6. INT. AUSTIN'S BED - LATER

Austin sits in his bed, bandanna over his eyes, holding on to

his bear which also has a bandanna over its eyes.

Austin turns onto his back.

AUSTIN
I don't care if it's early, go to
sleep.
(beat)
You want a song? I'm not singing a
fucking song.

Austin stirs some more, almost like he's annoyed…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Where do we go when we die? What
are you talking about? That's… just
stop.

But he starts relaxing…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
You… You go to heaven when you die,
don't you?
10.

AUSTIN (CONT'D) (CONT'D)

(beat)
What happened to everyone? You… I
don't know what happened to
everyone. You know I don't know.

His conversation gets softer, like he's talking to himself

now.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I don't know what happened. I
don't.
(beat)
Good night. Sleep tight…

As drowsiness starts kicking in, Austin starts whistling
Cruel World.

7. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin walks over to the cooler with granola bars in it. He

puts his stuff down and takes a bar out. Looks at it in deep
thought. Then:

AUSTIN
I think it's time to go shopping.
What do you think?

He looks at the unresponsive bear. Gives it a quizzical

stare.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(sarcastically)
I know, I was thinking the same
exact thing. It's DEFINITELY time
to go get some food!
(seriously)
Let me guess… I'll get the food,
you'll stay here?

Austin walks to the wash bucket. Uncovers it. There's water

in it. He starts to take his shirt off.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hey! It's a bit weird you're
staring at me?

Turns his back to the bear. Starts humming "Cruel World"

again.

As Austin "showers" (aka washing himself with a washcloth), a

static can be heard from the radio. A slight static. A small
static.
11.

But a static. A static being received.

8. EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - DAY

Austin walks to the edge of his compound. On his back- the

backpack. In his hand- the whittled cricket bat.

The edge of his compound is surrounded by the remains of an

old building. There's some razor wire, but mostly it just
looks like a good place to hide for a while.

He skirts around them. But something catches his eye. On the

ground. Not too far away from him.

He walks…

Looks…

It's a footprint. With familiar blue/red blood in it.

And a small clump of fur.

Austin looks at the fur. As he does, it stands on edge,

almost like his look is sending an electrical signal up it.

It points at him.

AUSTIN
What…?

He looks…

thinks…

what it is.

Inhales, turns away, bandannas his eyes.

As he turns away, the fur calms down, back to its original,

dead state.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)

Wait…

He slowly uncovers his eyes and looks at it again. As he

does, it starts standing on edge again, pointing at him
again.

He cautiously looks away. It calms down.

Austin tightly clenches the bat. A small smile on his face.

(CONT'D)
12.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I was right.

He starts walking into the forest. The smile starts to fade

into concern.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I was right…

9. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - DAY

Austin sits in front of the bulletin board, looking up at the

map while eating. There's fresh, red blood running down the

side of one of the coolers.

On Austin's lap is a plate. And in his hands, some VERY RARE

MEAT.

He takes another bite. Blood drools down his chin.

The teddy bear sits by him.

AUSTIN
So what do you think?

The blank stare of the bear. Austin nods as he looks at the

"SAFE ZONE" circle. Shakes his head.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Nah. Nah, we're safe. Look at that
circle.
(points to circle)
That circle means we're safe. And
we're still inside it. So you have
nothing to worry about.

A beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Besides, they're nocturnal. Right?
Night hunters?
(trailing off to himself)

They only come at night…

He looks at the bear for support.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Right?! I'm pretty sure… Right?
Psh, we're ok!

It stares back without a word.

13.

10. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin's working on the interior of his radio. He twists a

screw, looks at the bear with pessimism- it hasn't worked
before, why work now?

AUSTIN
(sarcastically)
Shall we try again?

He flicks a switch. The buzzing begins… And remains.

Confusion on Austin's face.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Did that… Did that… Is that
working?

He lets the static play out. It remains.

Austin's eyes become wide in happiness.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Holy shit.
(beat)
Holy shit!

He grabs and hugs the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
We did it! We fucking did it!… Holy
hell!

A faint voice can be heard coming from the static now.

"Hello", possibly?

Austin turns around. He notices it, grabs the mic.

VOICE (O.S.)
(over very broken radio
waves)
Hello?

Austin's eyes go big.

VOICE (O.S.)
(over broken radio waves)
Hello? Hello?

Austin grabs the microphone, talks into it.

AUSTIN
Hello? Hello, who is this?
14.

No answer. Static continues.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hello? I am survivor Austin Biggs,
over!

Listens for a response. Nothing.

The voice from the radio fades into quietness. One last half-
hearted effort:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
…Hello?

He looks down. Looks at the bear. Shakes his head- he can't
believe it.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
We had it…

11. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin dunks the bear in the water, washing it meticulously,

whistling Cruel World over the static of the radio.

He stops whistling to talk.

AUSTIN
You gotta get behind your ears.
Just like this.

He scrubs behind the bear's ears.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I ever tell you the tale about
Jenny Maison? "Jennifer", as she
liked to be called. Man oh man.
Let's just say I'm glad I didn't
fuck her!
(beat)
What about you, you gotta have some
lady friends, huh?

He scrubs the bear some more.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Let me give you some dating tips.
For when you're ready.

He pulls the bear out, starts drying it.

(CONT'D)
15.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
One, don't be a player. And if you
are, you gotta be organized. You
don't wanna be caught with your
Thursday booty call on a Friday,
you hear?

Austin chuckles. Holds the bear out in front of him.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Two, you need
(looks down)
your bandanna. Where's your
bandanna?
(beat)
'Cause I gotta wash it too.

Austin looks around, sees his own bandanna on the table.

Carries the bear with him as he walks over.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Where the hell?

Looks at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Where'd it go?

He sees a design peaking up from a box.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Did I…?

Looks inside the box. Doesn't see a bandanna, but does see
some wires.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Where the fuck did these come
from…?

12. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin carefully finishes twisting the wires together on the
microphone, completing the broken circuit. Tapes it with
BLACK TAPE.

AUSTIN
Alright.
(looks at microphone)
You're working.
(looks at radio body)
You're working.
16.

He looks at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I'm feeling it. 100. No, 1000
pounds says this works.

A beat.

Austin flips a switch. Static…

And it holds! Austin talks into the microphone.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hell…o?

No response, but the radio stays on. Austin looks at the
bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Do you think this is gonna hold?

He starts going through different frequencies, trying to find

an answer…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hello, this is Austin, over.

…but receives nothing. He puts his head down, gives up.

VOICE (O.S.)
(over broken airwaves)
Hello?

Austin perks up.

VOICE (O.S.)
(still broken)
Hello?

Austin picks up his microphone.

AUSTIN
Hello? Hello! This is Austin Biggs.

(long beat)
Over! Over, Austin Biggs over.

A long beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(to himself)
Don't tell me I'm--
17.

VOICE (O.S.)
(still broken)
Hey? Hey!

Austin perks up.

AUSTIN
Hello? Hello, can you hear me?

VOICE (O.S.)
(still bad, but not as
bad)
Yes!

Austin fixes the antenna.

AUSTIN
How's this?

VOICE (O.S.)
I… can… hear you! I can hear you!

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Oh shit.

Austin lets out a large breath in elation. The voice sounds

young, perhaps an eight year old boy.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
What's your name? Mine's Austin.

A beat.

VOICE (O.S.)
Luke.

Austin smiles- Luke sounds adorable and obviously young.

AUSTIN
Luke? What a cool name! My
brother's name is Luke. How old are
you, Luke?

LUKE (O.S.)
Eight.

Austin looks at his family photo. At his little brother.

AUSTIN
Eight?! You sound like a big,
strong man for an eight year old!

A beat as his family photo stands smiling at him.

18.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Well my name is Austin, Luke. What
are you doing on that… uh,
microphone?

LUKE (O.S.)
My mum left and I don't know where
she is and do you know where my mum
is?

A beat.

AUSTIN
Oh… Uh… No, no bud, I'm sorry. I
haven't seen your mum. But I'm sure
she'll be back soon! Like real
soon!

LUKE (O.S.)
You sure?

AUSTIN
Yeah! Do you… know what, where she
went?

LUKE (O.S.)
No. She isn't here.

AUSTIN
What about your dad? Brothers?
Sisters?

LUKE (O.S.)
…They're not here…

AUSTIN
Not there? Where'd they go?!

Luke starts sucking in breaths like he's crying.

LUKE (O.S.)
I-I-I don't k-k-know.

AUSTIN
It's ok big guy, I'm here with you!
It's ok, I'll help you find them!

LUKE (O.S.)
R-r-really?

AUSTIN
Of course, bud!

Austin smiles. It sounds like the tears are subsiding.

19.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Do you know where you are?

The sound of Luke yawning.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
You ok there big guy?

LUKE (O.S.)
I'm just tired… I'm tired…

AUSTIN
You're tired?
Yeah.
LUKE (O.S.)

AUSTIN
I'll tell you what, Luke. I'll
leave my radio on. If you need
anything, you call me. Does that
sound like a plan? Can you promise
me you'll call if you need
anything?

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok.

AUSTIN
Promise?

LUKE (O.S.)
I promise.

AUSTIN
Ok. I'll talk with you later, ok
Luke?

Another yawn.

LUKE (O.S.)
Uh huh.

AUSTIN
Good. Good night Luke, sleep tight.

Static. Starts to fade.

LUKE (O.S.)
… Don't let the bed bugs bite.

Luke fades out.

Austin looks at the bear with a large smile.

20.

AUSTIN
Shit, you hear that?

Austin gets up and starts walking. The bear blankly stares

back.

In the background, Austin looks at his map.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
We found a survivor!!!!

13. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

The bear sits on the table, almost like it was left there
overnight.

The whistling of "Cruel World" is heard, as well as other

commotion of Austin doing his morning routine.

Austin walks over to the map, still a bit wet from his
morning "shower".

AUSTIN
So where do you think Luke's from?

A beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
You don't care? You don't CARE?!
But I found a survivor! I went
through a lot of shit to find him.
Come on.

Beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Like, he's probably… Right…
(stares at map, to
himself)
The radio is crap, he's gotta be in
the safe zone. Has to be.
(to bear)

What do you think?

Austin turns and looks at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Really? You don't think he's
nearby? But wouldn't it be cool if
he WAS nearby? And his name is
Luke! Don't tell me it's not, like,
fate.
21.

A beat. Austin looks back at the map in disgust.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Five quid says you're wrong. He's
close. He's gotta be close. And
you're gonna see.
(beat)
You owe me 1000 quid by the way.

Austin spends a moment staring at his map. Then walks to his

"granola bar" cooler. He opens it. There's one left.

Austin reaches in and picks it up.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I hope Luke has food for the both
of us!

He also grabs a jug of water and takes a long sip.

14. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin tapes a picture up on the large wall, covering up a

previous one.

AUSTIN
Well that one looks good! Look at
you. You're a fuckin' artist, huh?

Turns and looks at the bear with a smile. But it quickly

disappears.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I'm saving room.
(beat)
Look, I don't want to cover the
map, ok? It's great and all but we
need to survive, remember? Surv-

A twig CRACKS! LOUDLY. Austin quickly turns around, head

down. Carefully waits before walking to the centre of his
compound and lifting his head up to see… Nothing outside.

Looks back to the bear, his confusion replaced by a smile.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
…Squirrels.
(beat)
MotherFUCKING squirrels, huh?

The radio starts buzzing, like someone is trying to get on

the other end. Then:
22.

LUKE (O.S.)
Are you there?

Austin runs to the radio and shuffles for the microphone.

AUSTIN
Luke? Luke! I'm here. Luke?

A beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
I'm sad, Austin.

AUSTIN
Ohhh, why are you sad bud?

LUKE (O.S.)
I miss my mum.

AUSTIN
I miss my mum too, pal. When did
your mum leave?

LUKE (O.S.)
Like a hundreds years ago!

AUSTIN
A hundred years ago?

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah!

AUSTIN
Why did she leave Luke?

A beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
I don't know.

AUSTIN
You don't know?

LUKE (O.S.)
No…

A moment; Austin thinks about what to change the subject to.

AUSTIN
Hey Luke?

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah?
23.

AUSTIN
Do you know where you're from,
buddy? Like, what, say, village you
live in?

LUKE (O.S.)
…England.

AUSTIN
I… I know that, bud. But, like,
where in England?

LUKE (O.S.)
Um… England City? I don't know, my
mum knows!

It sounds like the onset of more Luke tears. Austin quickly

quenches the fire:

AUSTIN
That's alright, Luke! Don't worry!
It's ok. Guess what?

LUKE (O.S.)
What?

AUSTIN
I'm also from England.

LUKE (O.S.)
Really?

AUSTIN
Yep!

A beat of silence.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I live in a small little village in
the woods. It's called Conifer! Do
you know where Conifer is?

Austin waits for a response.

But it doesn't come.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke? You there bud?

Waits.

And again, no response.

(CONT'D)
24.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Did he leave?
(beat, to the bear)
I guess he left.

Austin puts the microphone down.

He looks at the bear. Starts walking out to his makeshift

bed, singing:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(singing)
It's a cruel world. Cruel world.
Little pieces of the world that I'm
dreaming of. Cruel world, cruel
world…

15. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

He opens up a cooler. There's blood around the edges, there's

blood inside… But that's it. No meat, no nothing.

AUSTIN
Nothing? Nothing?!
(looks to bear)
This was full, yeah? You remember?

A beat for a response.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I… I can't… You have to talk to me.
Is, is that a yes. A no?

Another stare at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
A… Nothing. No?

A long stare.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
So I need to go get food or I will

starve? Is that what you're trying
to say?

A quizzical look.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Alright, alright! Fine! I'll go get
food again 'cause SOMEONE can't
keep their appetite under control.

A beat.
25.

A SIGH. Austin walks to the table and grabs his rounder's

bat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I'll be back soon. Don't destroy my
place while I'm gone.

He leaves the bear upright, its bandanna nowhere to be seen.

16. EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - CONTINUOUS

Austin walks to the edge of the compound. In the same spot as

the footprints, there's now some twigs.
The fuck?
AUSTIN

It looks almost like the beginnings of a nest. Austin walks

towards it, one hand on his bandanna.

He keeps his eyes on the nest, hard, never deviating.

He gets closer, slowing down as he reaches it.

Peers down.

Inside is the blue/red goo.

Austin looks up, searching into the forest. He shakes his

head. Back down.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
What's this shit?

He peers in closer, getting a good look at the goo. It sounds

like it's VIBRATING. He puts his bandanna over his eyes,
stands up.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Ok, no! No!

He looks away from the nest as he maneuvers around it. He

gets around and looks behind at it one last time.

Shakes his head.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
No! That… It's… squirrels. Stupid.
Fucking. Squirrels!
26.

17. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin walks into the compound. The bear looks at him from
the table, just where Austin left him.

AUSTIN
3 hours searching and nothing.
There's nothing out there.

He throws his shit down, walks to the table, talks to the

bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hours in the forest and not even a
fucking squirrel. Something's
scaring all the animals away! Is it
you? Yeah? You're scaring them
away?

Waits for a response from the bear. Obviously doesn't get it.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Know what I saw outside?
(beat)
A nest. I don't know what's making
it but it's NOT a fucking bird,
that's for sure.

Holds a long stare with the bear.

A long stare.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
No, I'm not going crazy. Know what?
100 quid. It's real-

A static over the radio. It's Luke.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin?

Austin quickly goes to the radio. Talks into the mic:

AUSTIN
Hey… hey bud, how's it going?

LUKE (O.S.)
I'm bored.

AUSTIN
Bored? Oh no!

LUKE (O.S.)
I'm bored.
27.

Austin sits, thinks, looks at the bear and furrows his brow.
Gets an idea.

AUSTIN
Wanna play I spy?

LUKE (O.S.)
What's that?

AUSTIN
It's a game I used to play with my
family. It goes like this: I spy
with my little eye, something…
(looks around)
Green.

LUKE (O.S.)
What is it?

AUSTIN
You gotta guess bud!

LUKE (O.S.)
Um… A spaceship!

Austin smiles and looks around.

AUSTIN
Yeah bud, a spaceship! Your turn.

A lull in the conversation.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke?

LUKE (O.S.)
I spy something red!

Austin smiles at the sudden burst of energy.

AUSTIN
Um… A car?

LUKE (O.S.)
Nope!

AUSTIN
Your shirt?!

LUKE (O.S.)
Nope!

AUSTIN
What is it bud?
28.

LUKE (O.S.)
A wall!

Austin chuckles.

AUSTIN
That's fantastic bud.

An alarm in the background. Austin turns and looks at his

watch.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hey bud, I gotta go. Ok?
LUKE (O.S.)
Ohhh, why?!

AUSTIN
It's getting late. But I'll be here
tomorrow, ok?!

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok!

AUSTIN
Alright, thanks bud. Goodnight!
Sleep tight…

A pause. Austin's smile starts to disappear.

LUKE (O.S.)
Don't let the bed bugs bite!

Austin smiles.

18. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

The bear sits awkwardly on the table.

AUSTIN (O.S.)
Mornin'

It continues staring as the sounds of Austin walking come
closer.

They stop.

Rustling.

AUSTIN (O.S.)
What? Where's the water?
29.

A beat. The sound of Austin picking up a jug and putting it

in his backpack as the bear just watches.

19. INT./EXT. WATERING HOLE - DAY

Austin puts his backpack down at the watering hole.

Sits down and gets the jugs out.

He dunks one in the water.

Picks it up.

Looks inside.

Is that…? There's some weird purple stuff floating around.

Almost like… The odd colour goo he's been seeing.

It vibrates as he looks at it. He jumps back- he knows what

it is. The bottle drops, everything spills out.

AUSTIN
No… No no no no. FUCK!

20. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin rushes to his map. He looks at the "SAFE ZONE" text.

Thinks. Shakes his head and puts an X through it.

He looks over to the bear.

The bear looks back.

Austin starts walking towards it.

AUSTIN
I saw something in the water. The
same shhhiittt!!! The stuff I saw
outside.

He looks at it. They hold the moment…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
No. No! I'm not fucking crazy.
Don't think for one second I'm
crazy.

He drops his backpack to the floor. Reaches inside and takes

out the two bottles of water.

They're empty.
30.

Austin looks wide eyed at the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Gah!

He sits down at the radio and frantically starts trying to

find a signal.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke, Luke? You hear me Luke?

A pause, no response.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Shit. Luke, this is Austin, ov-

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin…

Austin stops. Smiles. Calms down.

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Thank god, thank god.
(to Luke)
Hey bud. How are you?

LUKE (O.S.)
Bored again.

AUSTIN
You're bored again? What do you
mean?!

As Austin talks to Luke, he smiles.

But he continually looks over to the bear, losing his smile

when he does.

LUKE (O.S.)
I wanna go outside.

AUSTIN

Oh… Do you wanna play… wait, why
can't you?

LUKE (O.S.)
My mum won't let me.

AUSTIN
I thought your mum was away.
31.

LUKE (O.S.)
She is. But she told me I can't go
outside.

AUSTIN
Ohhh, did she say why?

LUKE (O.S.)
Because it's dangerous.

Austin looks up at the daytime sky. He shakes his head.

AUSTIN
Look Luke, you may as well listen
to her bud.

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok Austin. Will you come get me?

AUSTIN
Yeah! But I need to know where you
are first! You… You know where you
are, right?

A silence. A thought.

LUKE (O.S.)
My house.

Austin nods to himself.

AUSTIN
I know. I know. Could you do me a
favour bud?

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah?

AUSTIN
Can you look outside your window
and tell me what you see?

LUKE (O.S.)

You sure?

AUSTIN
It's day outside, bud. It's ok.

Rustling from the radio as Luke moves away.

LUKE (O.S.)
Trees.
32.

AUSTIN
Anything else?

A beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
I spy something purple!

AUSTIN
Purple?

Austin freezes.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
What… what do you mean? What do you
mean 'purple'?

LUKE (O.S.)
I don't know! It's like… ewww!

AUSTIN
Fuck. Does it looks gooey?!

LUKE (O.S.)
You said a bad word! We're not
allowed to say bad words!

AUSTIN
Right right, I'm sorry bud. You
said it's purple? Is it gooey?

Another beat as Luke goes and checks again.

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah! It's like purple and gross!

Austin's eyes go wide.

AUSTIN
Luke, pal, can you just… I'll be
there in a few days. Just be safe
and stay inside.

LUKE (O.S.)
Like my mum said?

AUSTIN
Yep, just like your mum said.

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok…

AUSTIN
But Luke.
33.

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah?

Austin lightens up the mood:

AUSTIN
I'm going to need you to start
making a pillow fort for us to play
in!
(beat)
How did you get your radio anyways?

LUKE (O.S.)
My what?
AUSTIN
The thing you're talking to me
with!

LUKE (O.S.)
(radio starts breaking up)
It's… M… Dad's

AUSTIN
What did you say there, bud?

LUKE (O.S.)
(even more static)
My… Dad…

Austin starts twiddling the antennas.

AUSTIN
Luke. Bud?

The only response is static.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke, you there?

Even more static. It fades to nothing.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)

Fuck! Stupid fucking thing.

21. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - CONTINUOUS

Austin looks at the bear.

AUSTIN
You hear that?

Stares at it, waiting for a response.

34.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
The fucking "purple goo". That's
not normal. That's… that's them!
See?!

He points an accusing finger at the bulletin board, towards

the newspaper headlines, as he stares at the bear.

A long stare. Austin starts shaking his head.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Stop telling me I'm going crazy!
You're going crazy!

He walks away. Trips over something.

It's the red slash box. He hears something inside. It sounds

broken.

Austin bends down. The box looks crumbled on the outside.

Looks at the bear.

It sits up on the table, looks down at Austin.

22. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin sits. He drinks water and eats nothing.

While he drinks, he stares at the bear.

Just stares. And drinks.

And stares. And drinks.

An ALARM goes off. Austin let's it blare as he stares at the

bear.

Staring. As the alarm continues.

AUSTIN
You gonna turn that off?

He waits for a non-existent response.

23. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin puts a knife in his belt. He grabs the cricket bat and
starts swinging it around.

The bear stares at him. Austin catches it in his glances.

35.

Stops, stares at it with angry eyes. Swings the bat without

breaking eye contact.

Austin takes a deep breath, slows his swinging down, almost

like someone just yelled out an insult to him.

Stops, takes some deep breaths…

Drops the bat. Pulls out his knife.

Looks at the bear. Spits, shakes, almost like he's going to

go after it.

But he doesn't. He walks away instead, shaking his head. He

walks right past the red slash box on the ground.

24. EXT. FOREST - LATER

Knife in hand, bandanna on head, Austin shakily walks through

the forest. Loudly despite trying to catch an elusive
squirrel, or deer, or some sort of meat.

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Austin. You got this. It's your
time to shine, Austin. Time to hit
it out of the park again. Hit it
out of the park.

Twigs break, but Austin keeps his head on high alert.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
You're not going crazy, Austin.
You're ok. You're ok. It's, it's…
it's fucking daytime!

A noise from above. Austin looks up.

A noise to his left. Austin looks to his left.

Despite the noises, his bandanna stays firmly ON his head

instead of OVER his eyes.

Austin looks down at his feet as he tries to navigate around
the foliage. A GROWL sends him flying back and his bandanna
flying off.

He gets up, turns around, and books it, leaving his bandanna
behind. Behind him, leaves crunch, twigs break, like
something big is chasing him.

He finds a big tree, hides behind it, closes his eyes as

SOMETHING sprints by him.
36.

Austin shakes his head as it passes.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(softly)
It's daytime. It's fucking daytime.

25. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin runs back to his compound. Heads straight to the

radio. Straight to the microphone.

AUSTIN
Luke. Luke?!

He waits. Taps on the table.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke! Are you there? Luke?

Taps. Taps. Taps.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Shit.

Walks over to the map. Looks.

Frantically:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Where are you Luke… Where are you?

LUKE (O.S.)
(through broken waves)
Hello?

Austin turns, looks at the radio. Runs back over. He messes

with the antenna as he talks.

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Fucking hell, I'm glad you're ok.
(to Luke)

Hey, bud. I just wanted to check
in, see how you're doing.

Luke's still muffled. Until:

LUKE (O.S.)
(clear waves now)
Austin, I heard something outside!

AUSTIN
Something outside? Like what?
37.

LUKE (O.S.)
I don't know what it was but it was
loud.

AUSTIN
When did this happen?

LUKE (O.S.)
Like a minute ago.

AUSTIN
(to himself)
Shit.
(to Luke)
Luke, bud, can you stay away from
the windows for me?

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok. But what was it?

Austin tries to keep his cool as… He thinks he knows exactly

what it was.

AUSTIN
It was just an animal bud. I'll be
there real soon to come and
getchya.

LUKE (O.S.)
Really?

AUSTIN
Yeah, just stay inside and keep-

LUKE (O.S.)
I'm hungry.

Austin looks to his coolers.

AUSTIN
Do you have any food, bud?

LUKE (O.S.)

Yeah.

AUSTIN
What about water?

LUKE (O.S.)
Uh…

There's some shuffling from the radio as Luke walks away,

checking.
38.

After a minute:

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah.

AUSTIN
Ok. And you said there's trees
outside your house, right?

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah.

Austin squints over at the map.

AUSTIN
Is there a lake by you?

LUKE (O.S.)
A lake?

AUSTIN
Yeah. Like a big pool. Do you have
one of those?

LUKE (O.S.)
Oh oh oh yeah. Like we used to swim
there and my dad used to teach me
to swim there.

Austin focuses in on the lake on the map. It's the only lake
around for kilometres.

AUSTIN
That's good buddy.
(beat)
You know I used to swim too?

LUKE (O.S.)
Really?

AUSTIN
Yeah! My dad taught me in a pool
though.

LUKE (O.S.)
Ohhh a real pool what's that like?

AUSTIN
It's like… It's like the lake, bud.
Except there's no mud or bugs and
you can go whenever you want 'cause
it's heated and nice and safe…
39.

LUKE (O.S.)
Really?

AUSTIN
(beat)
Yeah bud! I'll take you to one one
day.
(beat)
Just promise you'll stay inside and
remember your mum's advice.

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok. I'll stay inside.
AUSTIN
Good, bud. I need you to stay by
your radio, ok?

LUKE (O.S.)
Why?

AUSTIN
Because I need to be able to talk
to you. I'm just packing my bags
and then I'll come on over.

A beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok.

AUSTIN
Thanks Luke. I'm gonna go, but stay
put so I can talk to you!

LUKE (O.S.)
Ok Austin.

The radio goes silent. Austin stays for a moment, staring

into space.

Then he grabs the bear, uses it to muffle his scream.

AUSTIN
FUUUCCCCKKKKKK!

Then he gets up from the table…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
It's ok, it's ok. At least he has
food.

…and completely crosses out the "SAFE ZONE" bit from his map.
He walks to the granola cooler. Opens it up.
It's empty inside. He frantically looks over to the bear.
40.

It's empty inside. He frantically looks over to the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
What happened to the rations?!?!
Our fucking food!?

Obviously no response. Austin slows down as the bear's

"actions" start setting in.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
What… happened… to the rations?

He looks around, looks at the forest outside.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
No no no. I can't fucking do this.

26. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Boxes are thrown around the compound. Austin is searching

through them quickly, trying to find "stuff".

He takes out another KNIFE. Looks at it, throws it to a pile

on his left.

Takes out a SPOON. Looks at it, examines it, throws it to his

right.

Austin continues until the box is empty.

He tosses it, hitting the bear off the table. The THUD grabs
his attention.

AUSTIN
Stop laying around!

He waits for a response that doesn't come. Austin walks over

to the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Are you going to help?

He waits again, but nothing. He looks around- at his radio,
at the map, at his supplies, back to the bear.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Can you help me you CUNT?!

No response.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Uh… F… Fucks sake, I've had enough
of your shit!
41.

Austin picks up the bear and walks…

27. EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - CONTINUOUS

…Outside his compound to the pile of twigs- the "nest" as

Austin calls it.

It's bigger than before.

AUSTIN
You, you… You want to fuck me? Make
me stay? You jealous of Luke, is
that it? You're not my number one
anymore? Well whoop-de-fucking-do!
I'M A GOD DAMN SURVIVOR. I'M NOT
GOING TO DIE. But you… You're
nothing but a fake fucking bear.

Austin looks into the nest. There's some fresh blood soaking
in it.

Hesitation. But Austin decides to throw the bear in.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
A fucking bear!

Austin walks away, back to his camp. The bear just stays,
watching him…

Austin turns around:

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
By the way, I told you it was real!
You owe me 100 quid you fucker!

28. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin makes some final marks on his bulletin board. Then

walks away to continue organizing the contents of his boxes.

On his board, we see all "SAFE ZONES" sloppily x'ed out. We

see "SURVIVORS" sloppily x'ed out.

Austin opens another box. Looks inside, examines the

contents…

AUSTIN
Fuck. Fucking useless!

Tosses the box to the side. He looks at his stash of things

to his left. It's a small pile of mostly weapons.
42.

Worry on his face- it's not enough.

He walks over to his coolers. Empty. All of them.

He takes the water bottles. Looks at his red slash box. A

stare, a think about it…

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Uh… Uh… No. No, no, not yet.

29. EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

The bear sits in the harsh sun. TWIGS break around it. A

couple are thrown VIOLENTLY into the nest.

The throwing quickly stops.

Blue/red blood (or is it drool?) drips onto the bear.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

As the sun continues to beat down. A low, low GROWL is heard.

Blown air moves the bear's fur as the growling grows louder.

30. EXT. WATERING HOLE - LATER

Austin's at the watering hole, filling up his jugs with the

tainted water. He shakes nervously as he fills his water.

He fills up one, swirls it around, pauses for a moment.

Then he downs it despite the nasty colour. He struggles to

swallow it, but does. His cheeks PUFF OUT, but he manages to
keep his vomit down.

A slow exhale.

Then he fills it up again. Drinks it again. But can't hold it
this time and SPITS it out. Weird, blue/red goo starts to
drip from his mouth.

He wipes his face clean. A rustling behind him.

Austin freezes.

But so does the rustling.

Austin dunks his bottle back in to fill it up.

43.

He puts it in his backpack. Takes out the other.

The rustling starts again. It's closer to him now.

Austin freezes again. The rustling stops.

Austin waits a second, then let's out a loud exhale.

The rustling starts again, continuing as it gets closer to

him. Closer and closer and-

It's too close now- Austin SLAMS his eyes closed. Starts
shaking.

Austin holds his breath, keeps his eyes tightly closed.

It's close now. A SLURPING next to him. Splashing him even.

AUSTIN
(silently mouthing)
It's a cruel… Please mum, don't let
me die. Mum, dad, everyone, please
don't let me die. I want to
survive. I need to survive.
(beat)
Luke needs me.

The slurping subsides. Austin continues shaking with his eyes

closed, mouthing his prayers.

A little bit of murky water drips down his face.

Shortly after, rustling in the distance, getting further and

further away.

31. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin washes his face. He has two full jugs of water sitting
by his backpack.

Austin runs to the radio. Sits down.

AUSTIN
Luke, Luke. You there?

A beat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke, you there?

He starts to gently cry.

(CONT'D)
44.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke?
(beat)
Please answer…

Austin shakes as he starts crying harder. He gets up to look

outside, to make sure nothing followed him back. But he keels
over in his chair instead as his stomach growls.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin!

Austin's tears subsides, his smile returns. He hurriedly,

despite the pain, sits down.
AUSTIN
Oh Luke! Luke, bud!

LUKE (O.S.)
Are you ok?

Austin gives a little chuckle, lightens up his mood that's

probably scaring Luke.

AUSTIN
Yeah yeah, bud, I'm ok.

LUKE (O.S.)
Are you coming?

AUSTIN
I am buddy, I am. I'm… ready. I'm
all packed up.

LUKE (O.S.)
When are you gonna get here?

AUSTIN
Bud.

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah?

AUSTIN
I'm almost ready to leave. But Is
there anything else about your
house you can tell me? So I can
find you easier?

A beat as Luke thinks.

LUKE (O.S.)
We have a big backyard!
45.

AUSTIN
A big backyard?

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah, like… Huge!

AUSTIN
That's great Luke. That's great!
(beat)
I think I know where you are!

LUKE (O.S.)
Yeah!

Austin smiles, happy at Luke's words.

AUSTIN
That's awesome Luke. Promise me
you'll save some food for me.

The conversation continues, though we can't hear what's being

said…

32. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin is zipping up his incredibly full backpack. On the

map, a big CHECKMARK with LUKE is seen not too far from
Austin's compound.

He's whistling Cruel World.

LUKE (O.S.)
AUSTIN! AUSTIN!

A frantic turn.

AUSTIN
Huh?

LUKE (O.S.)
AUSTIN!

A sprint towards the radio.

AUSTIN
Bud. Bud. What is it? What is it
bud? I'm here.

Luke's voice is shaky- he's scared, crying, and whispering.

LUKE (O.S.)
Help. Me.
46.

AUSTIN
Whoa whoa whoa. What do you mean,
Luke? What do you mean help you?

LUKE (O.S.)
Come quick. Please!

AUSTIN
I'm coming as quick as I can bud!
I'm just leaving!

Austin looks at his belongings he's been packing.

LUKE (O.S.)
I saw something.

Austin stops. Eyes wide in terror. His hands shake, his body
shakes.

A GULP of air.

Back to the radio as Austin's hands start shaking.

AUSTIN
(slowly)
W-w-w-what do you mean, Luke? What
did you see?

LUKE (O.S.)
It was big. And orange. And had big
teeth and purple goo dripping from
its mouth and was big.

A pause as Austin digests what Luke said.

AUSTIN
So you… You saw it?

A loud BANG! CRASH! From Luke's end of the radio.

Luke's voice gets quieter and shakier.

LUKE (O.S.)

(softly)
It's inside.

AUSTIN
What's inside.

A beat. But Austin already knows.

LUKE (O.S.)
One of those things.
47.

AUSTIN
No no, it's just the wind.

LUKE (O.S.)
Are you sure?

A SMASHING from Luke's end. It's startles Austin. He jumps

back.

AUSTIN
Luke, listen to me.

The wire connecting the microphone wires gets untangled. It

falls, disappearing in the dirt, unnoticed by Austin.

The connection is failed now. Luke can't hear him.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Do not look at it. Understand?

A beat. Luke's in a whisper now.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin?

AUSTIN
Close your eyes. Do you understand?
I'm gonna leave here right now,
just close your eyes.

Another beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin, I'm scared…

AUSTIN
I know buddy, I'm here-

Another loud SMASH from Luke's home.

LUKE (O.S.)
I miss my mum!

Tears are audible through the speakers.

AUSTIN
It'll be ok buddy.

Luke gets a little bit louder.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin, where did you go?
48.

AUSTIN
I'm here, Luke. I'm right-

LUKE (O.S.)
I want my mum Austin. What do I do?

AUSTIN
Just listen to me, Luke.

LUKE (O.S.)
Hello?

AUSTIN
Luke…?

Austin moves the microphone away, looking at it in confusion.

He sees the loose wires now. Unconnected.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Fuck.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin?

Austin starts crying. He puts the microphone down and starts

scouring the dirt.

An even closer SMASH.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin?!? Austin, please, I'm
scared!

AUSTIN
I'm coming buddy!

Austin continues searching.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin?!?!
(beat)
Help me.

Austin looks back at the microphone on the table. Back to the
ground.

AUSTIN
I'll help you, bud. I'll help you.

He continues his frantic search. But the wire is long gone as

Luke's tears come over the radio.

A SMASH from inside Luke's room. A YELP from Luke.

49.

LUKE (O.S.)
Help! HELP!

Austin gets up from the ground. He sits in the chair. Tears

stream down his face as he can only watch and listen.

LUKE (O.S.)
(whispering)
It's in my room.

The loud sound of the Creature going through Luke's room.

AUSTIN
(through tears)
Keep your eyes down bud. Keep your
eyes down.

Luke CRIES through the microphone. His chair SQUEAKS.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(through tears still)
Eyes closed, bud. Eyes closed.

The Creature sounds very, very close to Luke.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(his tears are so sad)
Eyes down… Eyes down…

A HEAVY BREATHING.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(such sad tears)
Eyes down, bud. Eyes down and then
I'll come and see you. Ok?

A beat.

LUKE (O.S.)
Austin? It's here. Austin!

AUSTIN
Eyes…?

The heavy breathing continues.

LUKE (O.S.)
(whispering)
Austin?

AUSTIN
I… I…

A SCREAM! It's Luke. TEARING, CHOMPING, FIGHTING, EATING!

50.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
LUKE?!?!

MORE SCREAMING! MORE TERROR AS LUKE GETS DEVOURED BY THE

CREATURE!

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(through tears)
Luke?! LUKE?!?!?!

AUSTIN CAN ONLY LISTEN AS THE CREATURE TEARS LUKE APART!

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Answer me buddy! Answer me!

The chewing, the terror subsides as Luke dies. Scrambling
from his side of the radio.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Luke?
(beat)
Luke…?
(beat)
Luke…

33. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - NEXT DAY

Austin is sleeping on the ground by the radio. The ground is

WET, like he's been crying all night. His "bed" is next to
him, like he opted to NOT sleep on it.

As he wakes up, he stretches, opens both his eyes together,

and looks around.

His eyes are RED.

He walks over to his "granola" cooler. Opens it. Stares

inside.

Just keeps staring.

And staring.

He looks over his shoulder.

AUSTIN
Where's the f…

He trails off, seeing a lack of teddy bear.

Austin looks around.

(CONT'D)
51.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
…Food?
(beat)
Right…

He closes the cooler. Goes to another- the blood one -and

sees it's empty too.

A large SIGH. Opens the water cooler.

It's also empty.

A dull acceptance on his long face, Austin walks to his wash

bucket. There's still some water in that.

He looks at it.

34. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin sits, unmoving, with his bat in hand, looking up at

his map, his newspaper clippings- everything on his bulletin
board.

"NOCTURNAL" is crossed out. Over it now reads, "SMART FUCKING

SHITS".

He stares, his red eyes unwavering, as he sings Cruel World:

AUSTIN
(singing)
It's a cruel world, a cruel world,
that's why we work to spread a
little more love. Cruel world,
cruel world, little pieces that I'm
dreaming of. A cruel world, cruel
world, that's why we work to spread
a little more love. Cruel world,
little love is all I'm dreaming of…

Harsh CRACKING of things breaking in the background. Austin

doesn't move. He doesn't move despite how close they seem to
be.

But he sings faster, harsher, angrier.

LOUD cracking continues. As Austin just stares and sings.

And stays put.

35. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin's sitting at the radio. There's static.

52.

AUSTIN
(slowly)
Hello?
(beat)
Hello?

Austin has his hand on the dial to change frequencies… But he

never turns it.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Hello? L… Anyone there?

He listens in. Waits. Nothing. No one there.

Austin grabs his belly in ache. Keels over.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Ahhhh.

He clenches his mouth- the hunger pains are starting. Next to

him is the bloody rounders bat and a dusty steak knife.

Austin, still keeled over, takes the rounders bat.

36. EXT. FOREST - LATER

Austin creeps in the forest, his eyes wide. He looks around

at every little sound, ready to pounce at whatever made it.

A rustling. Austin turns and looks, victory in his eyes.

A bird chirping. Austin turns and looks, ready for a meal.

A low GROWL. Austin jumps around, intently looking in the

trees to find out what it was.

His stomach pains return. He keels over again. As he keels

over, a Creature moves into what was his line of sight.

Austin bends down, eyes closed in pain.

The Creature runs off.

Austin continues screaming in agony.

AUSTIN
(clenching his lips)
FUUUUUUCKKKK.

He takes deep breaths. Tries to stand up, but ends up in a

kneel. More deep breaths.

He manages to finally get up. Shakes his head.

53.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I can't do this.

He walks forward, towards where the Creature WAS.

37. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin sits at the table, furiously scribbling something. The

anger in his eyes is mirrored in the ferocity of his pen
strokes.

He holds up a drawing, done in black pen, of a FACE. A badly

drawn face. Angry. It looks like the other drawings on his

board, except more hasty.

Almost like a Creature.

Austin walks it over and tapes it over the map. With DUCT
TAPE.

AUSTIN
I knew you took it. I KNEW YOU TOOK
IT!

He THROWS the tape at the board.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I KNEW!!!

He kneels down and starts to cry.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
I'm sorry…

38. INT./EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - LATER

Austin packs up his things. All the tools, weapons, items

that he took out for his venture to Luke, he puts back into a
box.

It doesn't matter which box, just a box. Organization is non

existent.

He sees the red slash box.

AUSTIN
Fuck it.

He opens it up. Inside are PHOTOGRAPHS of Austin and his

family. There's also NONPERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS with a woman's
handwriting on the tops and sides.
54.

There's supplies they were stockpiling for this scenario,

like they were preparing before they died.

As Austin looks through everything, tears start to well up in

his eyes.

He goes through some more of his family's memorabilia. He

gets to a BIRTHDAY CARD. The ENVELOPE is open, but the card
is tucked neatly away. Austin pulls the card out with shaky
hands and opens it up.

It says: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! TO OUR BIG "BEAR", MOMMY AND DADDY

AND AUSTIN WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. TO THE BEST SON IN THE
WORLD, LUKE.

In sloppy, small handwriting at the bottom: YOUR ONLY THE
BEST BECAUSE YOUR 3 ;).

A TEAR drops onto the card. Austin grips it like he's going
to rip it.

He breaths heavily, holding back the tears.

And let's go of the card.

Austin puts everything back in the box. He sets it next to

his backpack, away from the other clutter.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Alright.

Grabs his BAT and walks out of his compound…

39. EXT. AUSTIN'S COMPOUND - CONTINUOUS

…stopping when he can see the nest.

It's large. It almost looks like it's ready to host some baby
Creatures.

Austin walks over with authority to the nest.

AUSTIN
I'm sorry!

Austin looks inside.

There's three large eggs, surrounded by some fluff and

scraps.

Austin's eyes go wide.

(CONT'D)
55.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Shhhhhhit.

Austin stares at the fluff. Shaking.

He bends in, picks some up. Let's it fall through his fingers
tips.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
(quietly)
This…

He picks up some more fluff. Watches it as it falls down.

N-n-n-no…
(beat)
AUSTIN (CONT'D)

NO!

Austin raises his arms and SMASHES an egg with his bat.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
NO!!!!

He SMASHES the remains. And smashes. And smashes.

AUSTIN (CONT'D)
Not again.

He SMASHES the eggs into pulps.

A BREATH blows his hair back. An angry breath. Austin closes

his eyes and keeps his head down.

His hair starts billowing as a Creature breathes on him.

Right on his face.

Austin keeps his head down, his eyes closed. His hair blows
in the foul breaths.

Still with closed eyes, he lifts his head up. Almost looking
face to face with the Creature.

Eyes closed as it breathes on him, now directly on his face.

Austin takes a deep breath.

Another deep breath.

Eyes still closed.

FADE OUT
56.
