HOW AI CAN TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

The effects of climate change are increasingly visible, storms, draughts fires and
flooding have become stronger and more frequent. global ecosystem is changing
including the natural resources and agriculture on which humanity depends. A report
on climate change estimated that the world will face catastrophic consequences
unless global green house emission is limited within thirty years

In recent years machine learning and artificial intelligence has been recognized as a
broadly powerful tool for technological progress. The al and ML are two tools in our
climate halting toolbox. The more we utilize AI and ML technology to help us
understand our current reality, predict future events and create new products and
services to minimize our human impact and chances of improving and saving lives,
creating a healthier world and making businesses more efficient

Some of the fields that AI can be deployed to reduce the climate changes are

 creating new low carbon materials

 predict extreme weather conditions/events
 make transportation more efficient
 geo engineer a more reflective earth
 give individuals tools to reduce their carbon footprint

In India, researchers are using AI to both reduce costs and carbon emissions
related to electricity usage, using a grant from Microsoft’s AI for Earth project
The UK even created the Climate Change Act. More and more individuals and
organizations are also caring more about the environment – cutting plastic,
recycling more, opting for hybrid/low-emission cars, and so on. People have been
protesting and the “there’s no planet B” message is starting to get through to the
governments and organizations that can really make an impact on the change.

Artificial intelligence, like all technology, does not always make the world a better
place – but it can. In the fight against climate change, we have seen that AI has
significant contributions to offer across domain areas. AI can make systems more
efficient (e.g. prevent electricity loss during transmission, consolidate freight, and
reduce food waste). It can enable remote sensing and automatic monitoring (e.g.
pinpoint deforestation, gather data on buildings, and track personal energy use). AI
can provide fast approximations to time intensive simulations (e.g. climate models
and energy scheduling models), and it has the potential to lead to interpretable or
causal models (e.g. for understanding weather patterns, informing policy makers, and
planning for disasters)
