THE USE OF SOCIAL

MEDIA
HEY, IT’S FOR YOUR WELLNESS TOO…
USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
ADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES

• Connectivity - The first and main advantage of the social media is

connectivity. People from anywhere can connect with anyone.
Regardless of the location and religion. The beauty of social media is
that you can connect with anyone to learn and share your thoughts.
• Education - Social media has a lot of benefits for the students and
teachers. It is very easy to educate from others who are experts and
professionals via the social media. You can follow anyone to learn
from him/her and enhance your knowledge about any field.
Regardless of your location and education background you can
educate yourself, without paying for it.
• Help – You can share your issues with the community to get help and
giddiness. Whethert is helping in term of money or in term of advice,
you can get it from the community you are connected with.
USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
DISADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES

• Addiction – The addictive part of the social media is very bad and can
disturb personal lives as well. The teenagers are the most affected by the
addiction of the social media. They get involved very extensively and are
eventually cut off from the society. It can also waste individual time that
could have been utilized by productive tasks and activities.
• Cyber bullying – According to a report published by PewCenter.org most
of the children have become victims of the cyber bulling over the past.
Since anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being
traced, it has become quite easy for anyone to bully on the Internet.
Threats, intimidation messages and rumors can be sent to the masses to
create discomfort and chaos in the society.
• Health Issues – The excess usage of social media can also have a
negative impact on the health. Since exercise is the key to lose weight,
most of the people get lazy because of the excessive use of social
networking sites. Which in result brings disorder in the routine life.
SOCIAL MEDIA HEALTH INTERACTION
THEORY: A NEW THEORY FOR SOCIAL
MEDIA RESEARCH
FROM THE HEALTHCARE INFORMATION AND
MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS SOCIETY
SOME FACTS:

• Social media and the internet have fundamentally transformed how

we communicate and interact (Bosslet, Torke, Hickman, Terry & Helft,
2011; Chou & Hunt 2009; Hawn, 2009; Powell & Darvell, 2003).

• As the Internet expanded into our homes, there was a growing

expectation of free and open access to information (Bosslet et al,
2011).

• Social media are broadly defined as the use of platforms of

electronic communication through which users create online
communities (Chou & Hunt, 2009).

THEORY CONCLUSION
PROPOSITIONS (MELEIS, 2004).

The theory of Social Media Interaction has four

fundamental propositions:

• Interaction changes over a period of time.

• Social media promotes wellness.
• Successful interaction leads to active participation.
• Social media proliferates information quickly.
ASSUMPTIONS

The theory of Social Media Interaction has four underlying

assumptions:

• Social Media is a means of accessing and gaining information.

• Social media creates a virtual community where interaction
occurs.
• Different groups may have diverse cultural practices
regarding the acquisition and dissemination of information.
• People who engage in interaction are rationally seeking to
maximize their health.
SOCIAL MEDIA
ENGAGEMENT THEORY
FROM RESEARCHGATE.NET
THIS THEORY CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS:

• what factors shape user engagement in social

media and;

• To what extent does user engagement affect an

individual’s social media usage behavior?

• Given the social nature of Facebook, it is not

surprising that social relationships among users
strongly influenced user engagement and usage.
WHAT NOW?

• First, critical mass of social acquaintances was a

significant predictor of user engagement as well as
social media use.

• Social media platforms provide organizations with

the ability to record the social interactions among
users and to identify their social structures.
FACEBOOK ENGAGEMENTS

• For instance, Facebook allows third-party

developers to create applications to introduce new
opportunities for users.

• Evolutionary actions such as these help introduce

new ways in which users can become actively
involved in Facebook rather than passive users.
THEN?

• The literature suggests that users seek emotional

support and tangible benefits from family and
friends (boyd, 2007; Dickinger et al., 2008; Hsu & Lin,
2008).

• Motivations behind usage focus around the

personal meaning obtained when involving
themselves within these social structures.
