“CHICKEN WING ANATOMY”

LABORATORY ACTIVITY #1

I. Objectives
1. To simulate camouflage done by the organism to blend with their
environment;
2. To observe how wild predators select their preys;
3. To identify the significance of the species’ adaptation to its environment; and
4. To test how an organism’s needs change the traits of the organism.

II. Materials

Apparatus Reagents Others

Paper puncher
Construction paper
(green, orange, pink,
peach, red, white, yellow)
Handkerchief

III. Procedure

1. Ten dots from each colored construction paper were punched.

2. A dark green handkerchief was spread on a book.
3. One member from the group was chosen to be the recorder and another member was
chosen to be the predator. Preys were acted by the remaining members of the group.
4. The predator had looked away while the dots of each color were spread over the
handkerchief by the preys.
5. The predator had turned back toward the handkerchief after the dots were randomly
spread by the preys. The predator was asked by the preys to immediately pick up the
first dot that caught his attention.
6. Steps 4 and 5 were repeated until a total of ten dots have been picked up by the
predator.
7. In the worksheet provided, the total number of dots selected by the predator was
written next to the appropriate color by the recorder.
8. The roles of the recorder and the predator were exchanged. Steps 4 to 7 were repeated.

V. Analysis

1. Which among the colored dots were picked up the most from the
handkerchief?

Among all of the six different colors, yellow was picked up the most from
the handkerchief. The preys in the group presume that yellow dots were
frequently picked up by the predator in the handkerchief for its
outstanding, neon color. Colormatters.com states that “more light is
reflected by bright colors, resulting in excessive stimulation of the eyes.”

2. Which among the colored dots were not picked up? Why do you think so?

Among all of the six different colors, green was picked up once only
because the handkerchief is also green. The green dots were not noticed
because they blend well in the background. The green dots had almost the
similar color as the handkerchief, yet the handkerchief was a little bit
darker.

3. If the colored dots represent food (prey) to a predator, what is the

advantage of the ability to use camouflage?
If the colored dots represent the prey, then the preys with the same
characteristics or color as the background will survive. These preys with
the same traits as its environment will be able to live and reproduce, for
they cannot be easily seen and targeted by the predator; thus, making
them survivors. On the other hand, the preys that have outstanding color
or traits will not be able to live and reproduce, for they can be easily
targeted by the predator. Unless, they will learn how to blend well in the
environment. The desired traits for survival can only be acquired after
proper adaptation.

4. If colored dots (prey) were able to live through several generations, what
trends in survival of prey would you observe?

If the colored dots were able to live through several generations, all the
dots will be colored green, for the trait which was used by the ancestor
who needed it will be passed through heredity. The trait of being colored
as green will pass through many generations because it is a need for
survival.

VI. Conclusion

Predation is occurring in today’s environment, and organisms feel the need to

live and reproduce. Just like predators, who consume meat in order to sustain
their life, preys exert effort in order to survive. Some preys are very
noticeable, for they have characteristics which do not blend well in the
habitat. Their characteristics lead them to misfortune—they become the
predator’s meal for the day. Some preys have already coped into its habitat;
thus, making them unnoticeable by the eyes of the prey. Characteristics of
the well-adapted preys spare their own lives. The outstanding preys still have
a thing to do in order to survive—adaptation. Without adaptation, no one will
be able to live and reproduce the next generation. Without the need for
survival, there won’t be changes in the next generation’s traits.
