YERBAMATE

Yerbamate not only contains caffeine, but it also contains theobromine. Theobromine has
stimulant properties, but also lowers blood pressure, decreasing the risk of cardiovascular
diseases.

Anxiety and jitters are not observed with Mate as they are with coffee, and this is attributed to
the combination of caffeine and theobromine present in the South American infusion. It is
also rich in minerals, vitamins, and its antioxidant properties are stronger than green tea!

SLEEP

Sleep Spray

Sidit (Tagalog):
Skullcap is a perennial in the mint family that grows wild in much of Canada and the United States. A
tincture or standard infusion made from the fresh or recently dried aerial parts are considered by
herbalists to be an effective nervine, the botanical equivalent to pharmaceutical sedatives and
tranquilizers.

Nervines do not cause excessive drowsiness, mental fogginess, or slow reaction times and in most cases
do not have a mood-altering effect as do some of the tricyclic pharmaceuticals, benzodiazepines, or
serotonin agonists. In addition, nervine herbs such as skullcap do not interfere with respiration or
digestion, do not suppress the REM phase of sleep, and are not considered habit forming.

Skullcap is also an antispasmodic, nerve tonic, and analgesic, making it one of the most relevant herbs
for supporting and nourishing the nervous system, calming stress, and relieving anxiety, muscular
tension, nerve pain, and headaches, especially when used in combination with other complementary
herbs.

Skullcap can be used with cardiovascular herbs in the treatment of hypertension and with hormone-
balancing herbs for emotionally disruptive premenstrual symptoms. When combined with respiratory
antispasmodic herbs, skullcap is effective for stress-induced asthma or panic attacks and provides relief
from stress headaches when used with different analgesic herbs.

When taken as a tea or tincture up to three times a day, skullcap helps with insomnia triggered by
muscular pain, twitchy muscles, neuralgia, or restless leg syndrome. Skullcap is also a valuable therapy
for weaning individuals from barbiturate addiction and to lessen the symptoms of nicotine and alcohol
withdrawal.

St. John’s Wort

St. Johns Wort is a perennial flowering plant native to many parts of Europe and the U.S. It has
been used for centuries for its pharmacologic properties in fighting depression, insomnia and
anxiety, and for promoting weight loss. Like valerian and other herbal remedies with long
histories of effective use and applications, the use of St. Johns Wort is widespread. A number of
clinical trials have also underscored its pharmacologic usefulness, adding oomph to dietary
supplement sales.

Feverfew
Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L.) (Asteraceae) is a medicinal plant traditionally used for the
treatment of fevers, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach aches, toothaches, insect
bites, infertility, and problems with menstruation and labor during childbirth. The feverfew herb
has a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine, especially among Greek and early
European herbalists. Feverfew has also been used for psoriasis, allergies, asthma, tinnitus,
dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. The plant contains a large number of natural products, but the
active principles probably include one or more of the sesquiterpene lactones known to be
present, including parthenolide. Other potentially active constituents include flavonoid
glycosides and pinenes. It has multiple pharmacologic properties, such as anticancer, anti-
inflammatory, cardiotonic, antispasmodic, an emmenagogue, and as an enema for worms. In this
review, we have explored the various dimensions of the feverfew plant and compiled its vast
pharmacologic applications to comprehend and synthesize the subject of its potential image of
multipurpose medicinal agent. The plant is widely cultivated to large regions of the world and its
importance as a medicinal plant is growing substantially with increasing and stronger reports in
support of its multifarious therapeutic uses.
