On Boarding and Socialisation Activity

The organisation recruits majorly at two levels and at both the level, the on boarding
and the socialisation process is different. The two levels are the Graduate Engineering
Trainee level and the lateral entry level.
Up to the Deputy Manager level, there are some steps which are common. After the
candidate is selected and joins on the reported date, document verification takes place. Before
the joining date, the company informs all the employees about the new employee which will
be joining the company.
The document verification process goes for 1 day. From next day onwards, 6 weeks
induction/Orientation starts. During orientation, the employees are made aware about various
departments and functions of the company. There are many vertical of the company so in the
first week of orientation, all the Business units Heads (BU Heads) deliver classroom lectures
for the new recruits. After the 1st week, the rest of the orientation becomes a field based
training module with on site training in all the plants of the company. In each plant the
employee is exposed to the working for 3 days. During the 6 week orientation programme,
there is no responsibility given to the employee. They are expected to learn about the
company with no deliverables. After the 6 week induction programme, the employee is
assigned a department and then 1 week of induction takes place which is department specific.
After that the employee is assigned duties. Also he/she is also provided a mentor who is in
the same department. For any issue, the mentor has to be approached.
For the lateral entries, documents verification is followed by 2 weeks of induction.
The first week is dedicated to the classroom session. However, in the following week, the
employee is inducted in the department he/she is selected for. The lateral entry employee are
expected to learn quickly about their deliverables and are supposed to start work after the 2
week induction programme itself.
For socialisation, the learning and training department organises various events such
as ice breaking activities during the first week of the induction programme. Also various
activities are organised on regular intervals such as inter department cricket, table tennis etc.
There is a scope of improvement in the process is that there should be an outbound
activity for the new trainees so that they get to know more about each other and it also acts as
an icebreaker activity.
