Skill based Revision Weekend Task Sheet - 1

Time assigned: 45 min Time Taken: Due Date: 02.08. 2019
To be completed in the process journal

1. Simplify and write down the answer with positive exponent

33 – 23 / 42
27 – 8 / 16
19/16

2. Solve:

65 * 125 / 105 * 57 * 35
7,776 * 125 / 100,000 * 78125 * 243
972,000 / 7812500000 * 243
972,000 / 1898437500000
= 0.000000512

3. Derive the value of x: 62x + 1 36 = 216

62x+1 / 62 = 63
62x+1-2 = 63
6 cancels out
2x + 1 – 2 = 3
2x – 1 = 3
2x = 3 + 1
2x/2 = 4/2
x=2

4. How many times larger is 3  10 – 14 than 3 ×10 -20 ? If K= m2n/p3 , find K when m=
5.62 × 1011 , n= 7.97 ×10-9 and p =8.44 × 10-4 . Give your answer correct to 3 significant
figures.

3 * 10-14 – 3 * 10-20
= 3/1014 – 3/1020
=

5. Factorise: x 2+ 2x - 48

X2 + 8x – 6x – 48
X(x+8) – 6(x + 8)
(x-6)(x+8)

6. Solve for y:

y-7+8y / 9y – 3 – 4y = 2/3
7y – 7 / 5y – 3 = 2/3
3(7y – 7) = 2(5y-3)
21y – 21 = 10y – 6
21y – 10y = -6 + 21
11y = 15
y = 15/11

7. Represent the following as linear equations in two variables also draw a graph for the
same. “You make a Facebook page. Every weekday (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday &
Friday), you get ‘x’ number of likes while on every weekend (Saturday & Sunday), you get ‘y’
number of likes. Totally, you get 140 likes in a week.”

5x + 2y = 140

8. Fifteen years later a man will be four times as old as he was fifteen years
ago. Calculate how old is he now?

X = age 15 years later

x = 4(x-30)
x = 4x – 120
x – 4x = -120
-3x = -120
x = 40

x -15 = current age

40 -15
= 25

9. Use your calculator to answer the following questions

(a)
(i) S = D/T
D = ST

D = 4 * 105 / (30*24)
D = 4 * 105 / 720
D = 4 * 105 / 7.2 * 102
D = 0.55 * 103
D = 555.56 km

(ii) S = D/T
D = ST

365.25 * 20
= 7305 days
DPSI/MYP4/Mathematics
D = 4 * 105 / 7305
D = 400 000 / 7305
D = 54.76 Km

(b) S = D/T
T = D/S

T = 500/2 * 103
T = 5 * 102 / 2 * 103
T = 2.5 * 10-1
T = 2.5 / 10
T = 0.25 hours

(c) 2.63 * 10-5 – 8 * 10-7

2.63/105 – 8/107
0.0000263 – 0.000008
0.0000183
1.83 * 10-5

10. The water lily Nymphaea Mathematicus doubles its size every day. From the time it was
planted until it completely covered a pond, it took 26 days. How many days did it take to cover
half the pond ?

Lilly size – day 1 = x

d = day

Area of pond = xd = x26

Area of ½ pond = x26 / 2

2d = 225 / 2

25 days
