However, the service conditions shown in this bulletin are believed to be well within the capabilities of DERAKANE epoxy vinyl ester resins when laminates are properly designed, fabricated, and installed. DERAKANE 470 resins show corro- sion-resistance properties similar to those of DERAKANE 411 resins. How- ever, they display better chemical resistance to a wide variety of organic ‘solvents, and perform much better at high temperatures. Laboratory tests and industrial use both indicate that DERAKANE 470 resins can be used in many applications exposed to various combinations of acids, halogenated organics, baer ae eta With proper curing and fabrication, lami- nates made with DERAKANE 470 resins ‘have the ability to withstand chlorinated ‘solvents such as monochlorobenzene at ambient temperatures without loss of properties. ‘Many chemicals such as fuming nitric acid and trichloroethylene, which ccan not be handled in pipes or tanks made with DERAKANE resins, can be handled under special conditions in fume-removal systems made with DERAKANE resins. The special requirements in general call for 1) diluting the fumes comin, from the tank with air, and 2) designing the duct system so that condensation is minimized and so any condensation that does form has no pockets in which to collect, ‘With proper design, equipment can be used well above the heat-distortion temperature of the resin. Properly ‘supported ductwork fabricated with DERAKANE 470 resins has been in use for ten years at continuous service temperatures of 350°F to 400°F (177°C to 204°C), Itis sometimes difficult to predict just how aggressive certain combinations of chemicals will be toward reinforced plastics. Some mixtures of chemicals will be much more aggressive toward glass fiber laminates than the individual chemicals will be. One such combina- tion contains a strong acid plus an oxi- dizing acid, Examples ofthis are nitric acid/sulfuric acid solutions and sulfuric acid/chromic acid solutions. Another surprisingly aggressive solution is the combination of a dilute aggressive or- ganic material in an acid solution. A common example is benzene in hydro- chlotic acid. Each combination of chemicals should be evaluated and discussed with your Dow Plastics representative to determine the suitability of equip- ‘ment made from DERAKANE epoxy vinyl ester resins for these aggressive environments. Consultation with the Resin Products Department Resins Technical Service and Development group on specific exposure conditions is invited. Your best access to our TS&D expertise is through your Dow Plastics sales representative (see “Dow Technical Support,” p. 12). FDA COMPLIANCE All DERAKANE 411, 411C and 441 series ‘epoxy vinyl ester resins, when prop- erly formulated and cured, will comply with the US. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as amended under Regulation 21 CER 177.2420. These resins may be used safely as articles or components of articles intended for repeated use in contact with food, subject to certain limnitations described in the regulation. Note: While st is the customers'respons- ‘bility to determine compliance of their end products, resources of The Dow Chemical Company are available to assist with pertinent data on the specific epoxy vinyl ester resin being used. n Chemical Resistance ‘This bulletin lists chemical reagents and environments. It gives the highest known temperature at which equip- ment made with DERAKANE epoxy vinyl ester resins either has given good service, or on which field or laboratory testing (in accordance with ASTM C581-87) liad indicated good expected service life. Ifexposure is intermittent or is to fumes or spills only, itis possible to get good service at temperatures considerably higher than those shown, In assessing a resin fora particular piece of equipment and for a particular environment, factors other than maximum service temperature are important and include: * design suitability © type of reinforcement * fabrication sequence and technique * type ofcure * amount and type of impurities in the chemical and/or environment. Because those factors are beyond the control of The Dow Chemical Com- pany, no warranty concerning use of the resins can be made. DOW TECHNICAL SUPPORT ‘The Resin Products Department Technical Service and Development laboratories in Freeport, Texas, are staffed and equipped to assist custom- ers in making final decisions on DERAKANE resins for specific uses. For details, call (409) 2383124 (USA), or (519) 339-4647 (Canada) partic- ularly wien: * exposure conditions will be near the maximum temperature shown; and/or * significant amounts of trace impuri- ties or contaminants are known to be present in the environment and/ or the chemical. 2 ‘Whenever possible, a laminate sample should be tested under actual or simulated use conditions before a final decision on the suitability or choice of DERAKANE epoxy vinyl ester resins is made. Dow can provide corrosion quality ‘est coupons made with DERAKANE resins for customers to expose under actual service conditions or in the laboratory. Where time allows, we recommend these coupons be evalu- ated at intervals of 1 month, 3 months, and where results indicate at 6 months. Evaluation is recommended for: eight change thickness change * appearance vs, exposure time © flexural strength * flexural modulus * Barcol hardness Dow will carry out such evaluations and will prepare a test report when ‘coupons (by prior agreement) are returned by customers to the Techni- cal Service and Development labora tory, In certain cases, the facilites also are available for testing coupons in various solutions sent by customers. Note: Solutions should be sent only after discussion with the Dow labora- tory, Data from such tests are very useful in defermining the most suitable DERAKANE resin for the intended application, INTERPRETING THE DATA On the basis of laboratory tests and actual industrial use of DERAKANE resins, the service temperatures shown in the tabular listing, beginning on page 13, are believed to be well within the capabilities of the resin(3) when equipments properly designed, fabricated, and installed, Note: DERAKANE 411, 441-400 and 470 resins, as listed in the table, are representative of all 411, 441-400 and 470 products respectively. The values given apply to all members of the prod- ‘uct group unless otherwise stat. In the following chemical resistance tables, a blank space simply indicates that no data were available at the time that temperature ratings were assigned. Footnotes used in the tables are explained below. NR: Not Recommended 1, Double synthetic vei should be used in inner layer. 2, Posture recommended to in- crease service life. 3.
