WHAT’S HAPPENING
n The Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club is holding its annual Sight-In Days Nov. 1-14. Firearms may be sighted in from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. The club is located four miles west of Mecosta on M-20. The committee needs volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean up. The dinner is for the less fortunate and seniors, who are unable to join other family members or if they need to be with other people for the holiday. The committee believes that no one should be alone or in need for the holiday, and invite those people to the dinner for great food and fellowship. Donations are also needed to help defray the cost. If individuals or families do not have time to volunteer, but would like to financially help, donations may be sent to Mecosta Area Committee, Box 254, Mecosta, Mi 49332. To volunteer to help call Sharon at (231) 972-2945 or e-mail spgiul29@hotmail.com. n Mecosta’s kick-off to Christmass will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 25, with a Tree Lighting will take place with a few carols at Bromley Park and then Santa will be at the Morton Township to allow the kids to visit with santa. Winter weather and your health
North AmericAN Precis syNdicAte
hypothermia victims. Symptoms include: n Lack of coordination n Mental confusion n Slowed reactions n Shivering n Sleepiness. Cold-weather months usually bring more cases of the flu, which is more common among people with cardiovascular disease than any other chronic condition. Heart patients are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Even if they can’t get shots early in the flu season, it’s important to remember that flu shots can be beneficial as late as January. Flu season often lasts well into March. Many people use a decongestant when fighting off a cold or the flu. People with high blood pressure should be aware that decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of prescribed blood pressure medications. Many over-the-counter cold and flu preparations contain decongestants such as: n Ephedrine n Levmetamfetamine n Naphazoline n Oxymetazoline

Now that the winter months are upon us, it’s important to know the potential health problems facing people with cardiovascular disease, including overexertion, hypothermia, the flu and complications from over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Many people aren’t used to the physical stress of outdoor activities and don’t know the dangers of being outdoors in cold weather. While anyone who is outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion such as lifting a heavy shovel full of snow, it’s even more important for people with cardiovascular disease. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snowdrifts can strain a person’s heart. Winter sports enthusiasts who don’t take precautions can suffer from hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep your internal temperature warm enough, and it falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths among

n Phenylephrine n Phenylpropanolamine n Propylhexedrine n Pseudoephedrine n Synephrine n Tetrahydrozoline. Always read the labels on all OTC medications, especially if you have blood pressure

of 120/80 mm Hg or greater. If you have high blood pressure—and especially if you are on prescription medication—consult your health care professional before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements. For more information about

cardiovascular disease and cold weather, visit www.heart. org/coldweather. For more information on high blood pressure, visit www.heart.org/hbp. Follow the American Heart Association on Facebook (HBPescapees) or Twitter (@AMHeartHighBP).

Calm pet anxiety naturally

Protecting your pet from feeling “under the weather” may have a surprising solution. For many animals, the noise of thunderstorms and other common weather sounds can be a significant source of

anxietyFortunately, reports Dr. Margo Roman, DVM, pet owners can treat their animal’s anxiety--whether it’s caused by noise, separation, new surroundings, vet visits or other factors-naturally.

A variation of an original blend of five flower remedies formulated more than 70 years ago, Rescue Remedy Pet is available alcohol-free for dogs, cats, reptiles, fish, birds, horses and rabbits. Visit www.rescueremedy.com/pets.

“It is just a virus, go home, you will get better”
These are words we often hear when we go to the doctor or Urgent Care with cold symptoms, flu, vomiting, or diarrhea. While this is most likely accurate, we still feel bad and would like to get back to the world as soon as possible since we have things to do and places to go. The typical OTC (over-the-counter) medication like decongestants and antihistamines will have side effects of drowsiness, high blood pressure, nervousness, insomnia, problems with urination, etc. Another problem is that when cold and flu sufferers get to the point of taking a medication that will suppress symptoms until the body heals on its own; the action of suppressing symptoms is often counterproductive to what the body is doing to help itself. Sometimes this will actually extend the illness. However, there are over-the-counter medicines that help nip symptoms in the bud. Homeopathic medicines work with the body to help it rebalance and heal itself instead of simply masking symptoms. Four clinical studies show that top-seller Oscillococcinum helps reduce both the severity and duration of flu-like symptoms. In fact, when patients took it within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours, according to a study published in a British scientific journal. These results confirm results from previous studies. Other homeopathic remedies that are good for the respiratory infections are Gelsemium (flu – fever, body aches, weakness), Kali Bichromicum (Sinusitis and thick mucus), Spongea (dry cough and croup), Drosera (whooping cough and barking cough), Ipecac (vomiting and cough until vomiting) remember syrup of Ipecac causes vomiting and homeopathic ipecac stops vomiting, Podophyllum (Stops diarrhea), Belladonna (fever and red throat, great for kids who have had fever seizures in the past). So when you hear the dreaded words, “The tests are normal, it is just a virus”, now you will have some tools to improve the immune response and accelerate the healing process.

THE MECOSTA-OSCEOLA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT is accepting applications for an Early On Home Visitor (yearround position- approximately 2000 hours). A complete posting is available at www.moisd.org. Interested applicants must submit a letter of application, resume with current letters of recommendation and transcripts by November 19, 2010, to: Mark R. PIONEER EAST NEWS SHOPPER • MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2010

In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648 injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in the state’s highest accident rate). What can you do? • Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober. • Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision. • Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk. • Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads. If a crash is unavoidable: • Don’t swerve! • Brake firmly • Hold on to the steering wheel. • Stay in your lane. • Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as “Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”

For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your vehicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their “preferred” repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe it’s not in your best interest to take your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost, whereas these “preferred” shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethical to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. You’re our customer, not your insurance company’s. Hill’s Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the finest repairs available regardless of DRP contracts.

We at Hill’s Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December and a big surge directly after the time change, because more people are still on the road at sunset.
