Letter from the Editor:
The Long Game
T
here is a quote, “People
often say that motivation
doesn’t last. Well, neither
does bathing - that’s why we
recommend it daily.” - Zig Ziglar
I started with The Tartan
back in December 2017 as a
freshman, not knowing what I
was really getting into.
I had a newspaper that
needed to be resurrected,
a website professors were
embarrassed to show to others,
virtually non-existent online, a
starter pack my Managing Editor
and I, zero or forgotten structure
of how to run a business; let
alone a newspaper, and people
asking me questions which I
couldn’t answer ... yet.
So, I took what I learned
from freelancing with
videogame websites, creating
YouTube videos, live streaming,
developing small websites,
self-branding, and ultimately
learning the responsibilities,
challenges, and ups and downs
that my family and I have been
through owning and running a
small business.
Also, it’s good to note that
Google was a big help as well.
I started creating the new
website the day I got access.
Within hours, I created a
website that didn’t look half
bad. Granted there were some
fatal errors here and there but
nothing a quick search couldn’t
fix. And so, the resurrection of
the newspaper began.
Before I left for Winter
Break, I worked on finding
people willing to join the team -
creating Facebook job postings,
talking to whoever would listen,
interviewing people for positions
I was making up as I went along,
and talking to people coming
to me for direction. I told them
to give me a second, and I’ll get
back to them.
I researched about
newspaper positions, how
newspapers are run, and how to
be an effective leader.
I can tell you now, that there
was a lot of push back from older
staff. Things were changing,
and they didn’t like it. I can say
they definitely told me through
anonymous end of the year
evaluations. However, while I
considered their comments and
feeling, I was not going back to
the old ways of how The Tartan
was run.
One of the comments
said: “This is supposed to be
something fun and it’s turning
into the opposite.” I rebuttal
there comment with, while I’m
trying to make it fun, The Tartan
is a newspaper and needs to be
a newspaper. Not the blog or
weekly neighborhood newsletter
it was before.
One of my favorite quotes
is: “There is only one way to
avoid criticism: do nothing,
say nothing, and be nothing.” -
Aristotle
With that, each week
working at The Tartan (from
the very beginning) has been
an adventure. Always changing,
and something new.
Going from 7 newsstands to
30 current stands around the
Radford campus, a complete
overhaul of the design of the
newspaper itself (granted
having no prior knowledge
using InDesign ... thank you
Google), establishing a staff
of over 20 members, garnering
111,000 total views since the
new construction of rutartan.
com, creating a training course
for members, and hitting 35
published newspapers since I
became Editor-in-Chief.
It’s freaking crazy!
While I get many sleepless
nights working at The Tartan, it’s
ultimately you all - the readers,
editors, writers, photographers,
Geoff White, Leanne Kelly, and
even the other student media
organizations that are keeping
ME GOING and The Tartan.
I simply can’t thank you all
enough for your hard work
and dedication in creating a
newspaper people want to read.
Now, while I can go in-
The
Tartan
depth for hours of the successes
and failures of The Tartan, I
won’t. However, The Tartan
has been resurrected, and you
all should be very proud of the
contributions you have made to
its success.

An $8 Million Gift to Radford NRV Passenger Rail

arly morning on Oct. 3,
a campus-wide email
was sent from Radford
University President Brian O.
Hemphill inviting students to a
“momentous occasion” at 2 p.m.
that day without any further
explanation.
That afternoon, signs
overtook the front of Kyle Hall
advertising the “Momentous
Occasion,” as well as directing
people to the event and where to
find parking.
Even though many people
knew about the occurrence of
the event for weeks, there was
still much secrecy to what the
event was about.
Even Faculty Senate
President Jake R. Fox, Ph.D.,
admitted while he was speaking
during the actual event that he
did not know exactly why he was
there.
Remarks were also given by
Robert Blankenship, a junior
finance and marketing major at
Radford, who gave a testimony
to the amount of real world
experience he has received from
studying at Radford.
A crowd of more than 250
people waited for President
Hemphill to announce why
everyone was gathered.

President Proposes Tuition Freeze In Response to $1.7 Million Offer

President Dr. Brian
Hemphill announced via
email April 1, his proposition to
not increase tuition and fees for
the 2019-2020 school year.
The recently passed state
budget will divide $52.5 million
among each Virginia university
that agrees not to raise their in-
state undergraduate tuition and
fees this year.
Item 253.50 of the House
budget bill, HB1700, states
that the fund is for “In-State
people, he invited Sandra
“Sandy” Davis and William
“Jack” Davis to the podium
with him, he then announced,
“Today I have the distinct honor
of standing before each of you
and announce a landmark gift to
provide scholarships to students
studying in the College of
Business and Economics and the
College of Visual and Performing
Arts.”
He continued, “Sandy and
Jack’s monumental gift will
produce a lifetime of Davis
Scholars who will excel in the
classroom, distinct themselves,
really be distinctive, as
professionals as they move
into their careers, and provide
their time and talent to the
communities in which they
live, and they work. I say to
each of you, a monumental gift,
resulting in the naming of the
Sandra C. Davis and William C.
Davis College of Business and
Economics.”
The Davis’s revealed an
image of Kyle Hall with its
new name of “Davis College of
Business and Economics.”
The Davis’s donation of $8
million is the largest individual
donation that Radford University
has ever received.
This gift will provide
incoming first-year students
and transfer students with a
scholarship of $4,000 a year or
$2,000 per semester.

The budget passed the House
of Delegates but has yet to be
signed by Gov. Ralph Northam.
“The accessibility and
affordability of higher education
have been and continue to be
top priorities for our University,”
Dr. Hemphill said in the email.
“I am proud to announce that
Radford University is proposing
to freeze tuition for in-state,
undergraduate students
and planning to accept the
additional investment by the
Commonwealth of Virginia.”

Davis Scholars must be
studying full-time in the College
of Business and Economics
(COBE) or the College of Visual
and Performing Arts (CVPA) and
have a high school or college
transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Students also must be Virginia
residents.
Students will be able to
renew this scholarship for two
academic school years or a total
of four semesters. Students who
wish to be eligible for additional
semesters must maintain a GPA
of 3.75 or higher.
An anticipated 80 students
will reward this scholarship
each academic year once fully
implemented, but three students
will be selected the first year.
Along with the renaming of
COBE, a 350-seat performance
hall will be renamed to the
Sandra C. Davis and William C.
Davis Performance Hall, which
remains the music department’s
primary performance area.
The event was immediately
followed by a campus-wide
reception on the second floor
of Kyle Hall where refreshments
were provided.
During the event, Sandy
Davis said, “Radford is on a
wonderful course. There is a
positive atmosphere here, and it
is very contagious.”
“Our ultimate goal is to help
provide scholarships for Radford
University students.” The
Tartan
intent to freeze tuition, stating
in the email, “On behalf of
the Board, I also want to echo
President Hemphill’s words
of appreciation to our elected
leaders for the investment they
are making in our students.”
May 10 is when the final
decision will be made by the
university’s board of visitors.
According to the Partners
For College Affordability and
Public Trust (PCA), tuition at
Virginia state universities has
risen an average of 83 percent
in the last 10 years. Radford’s
tuition has risen slightly less
than the average at 72 percent –
the eighth highest out of all 15

Train travel may experience
a revival in the New River
Valley as soon as 2020. The
project, fittingly dubbed “New
River Valley 2020” is on track,
according to spokesperson Ed
Lawhorn, who addressed the
Radford City Council on Sept.
24.
When finished, the project
would allow passengers to board
a train in Christiansburg, Va and
ride it as far as Boston, Ma.
The clear appeal of cheap
travel which allows commuters
to avoid the I-81 corridor is one
of the main draws of the project.
With two universities in the
area, the ridership is projected
to be stable between the New
River Valley and Northern
Virginia.
Several potential sites
were surveyed for the new
station around the region
before a portion of land near
the Christiansburg Aquatic
center was settled on. The land
in question has already been
partially purchased by the town
of Christiansburg, with just a
few acres remaining to be closed
on.
There were several specific
qualities the project was looking
for. Ed Lawhorn said in an
interview with The Tartan,
“It was done by the
Metropolitan Planning
Organization and the Regional
Commission, with a key being
proximity to population, having
a good road network around
the site and sufficient land for
facility network.”
During his presentation

Virginia.
This budget bill covers
both 2019 and 2020. It splits
up the funding given to public
institutions each year. If we take
a look at the money allocated
to Radford for both years, the
university is set to receive
$213,203,929 in 2019 and
$237,568,265 in 2020. Adding
these figures together gets us
the total amount allocated to
Radford by this budget bill:
$450,772,194.
Should Radford vote to
freeze their tuition and fee rates
this year, this would amount to
$1,659,000 in additional state
to the city council, Lawhorn
explained the projects next
steps. One of which is a
study on any operational and
maintenance challenges the
current rail line might pose.
The other important study to
be conducted by the committee
will be the ridership study by
Amtrak.
To help fund these studies
and the completion of this
project the state has given a
grant of $350,000.
For Lawhorn, the work
will be worth it for both the
future riders and the region.
With the addition of another
travel option, the traffic on
the interstate will hopefully be
less heavy, and more economic
opportunities will likely come to
the New River Valley.
According to the project’s
website, nrvpassengerrail.org,
the New River Valley has the
fastest growing population in
the region. This fact, coupled
with the prominent universities
in the area means that adding
another means of travel will
draw further attention to the
area.
More potential students will
have easy access to the region,
a fact that is sure to make their
parents happy.
With construction starting
on a number of new businesses
in Christiansburg, the
committee hopes that the new
transportation hub will further
the growth to all of the New
River Valley cities. With the
potential for new jobs, more
students, and more financial
stability for the region it’s easy
to see why so many community
members are jumping on board
the passenger rail project. The

Remembering Those We’ve Lost

be defined by our connection
as a caring and supportive
community and our outpouring
of comfort and support to
Alexa’s family, loved ones
and each other. I encourage
all Highlanders to continue
honoring Alexa’s legacy by
sharing your light and love
with others. I also ask that
we continue supporting each
other in the days and months to
come.”
The night closed with a silent
prayer as students held blue
lights to the sky; the Radford
community grew a small step
closer to healing from its loss.

tan Lee, a Marvel of the
American comic book
industry, dies at 95 due to a
series of recent health problems
such as a bout of pneumonia and
vision issues.
Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee, told
TMZ that her father was rushed
to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
early on the morning of Monday,
Nov. 12, and died in the hospital.
Fans and friends of Lee
shared their thoughts:
“Luke Cage” actor Mike
Colter sated, “Some people say
comic books are silly. That they
just don’t get why people are so
into them. Now I’m beginning
to think they should be required
reading for our children. It
may make us more loving and
tolerant adults.”
“Thor” actor Chris
Hemsworth said, “RIP my friend.
Thank you for the incredible
adventures your stories took all
of us on. My love and support
goes out to all your friends and
family.”

George H. W. Bush - 94

eorge H.W. Bush, former
41st president of the
United States, died on
Friday night Nov. 30 at his home
in Houston. He was 94.
His passing was announced
by his office, which came less
than eight months after the
passing of his wife of 73 years,
Barbara Bush, who died due to a
chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease on April 17.
Herbert Bush had
Parkinson’s disease that
resulted in him to be reliant
to a wheelchair or motorized
scooter in recent years. After the
passing of his wife, he had been
in and out of the hospital as his
health declined.
Many former U.S. presidents
and colleagues took to social
media to share their condolences
and reactions to his passing.
Former President Barack
Obama said, “America has lost
a patriot and humble servant
in George Herbert Walker Bush.
While our hearts are heavy
today, they are also filled with
gratitude. Our thoughts are with
the entire Bush family tonight
– and all who were inspired by
George and Barbara’s example.”
“He never stopped serving,”
said former President Bill
Clinton. He adds, “I am
profoundly grateful for every
minute I spent with President
Bush and will always hold our
friendship as one of my life’s
greatest gifts.”
President Trump also
designated Dec. 5 as a national
day of mourning, also in which
Bush will be eulogized by his
son, former President George
W. Bush, along with family and
friends on Wednesday at the
Washington National Cathedral.

The money will not be spread
evenly; some Universities are
set to receive more or less
than others. According to PCA
data, Virginia Commonwealth
University has risen its tuition
and fees by 114 percent in the
last decade, the second-highest
increase in the state. This budget
is offering $6.7 million to VCU,
the most out of this proposal.
The budget proposal also
includes $8 million for the
Virginia Community College
System “in order to effectuate
the goals of this item.”
PCA ranks colleges by their
net price, the expected out-of-
pocket cost of attendance after
grants and scholarships are
applied to that number. Despite
having risen so much in the past
decade, PCA ranks Radford’s net

to Radford student Alexa
Cannon. In her honor, they
were asked to wear blue, Alexa’s
favorite color and to carry blue
glow sticks, which substituted
for candlelight.
This comes nearly a week
after Alexa’s death as what was
once her roommate, Luisa Ines
Tudela Harris Cutting, now
stands charged with her murder.
In the opening of the event,
a projector screen displayed a
photo of Alexa with a smile that
greeted the crowd as they came
in and set the tone of “Light
and love,” as Radford University
President Brian Hemphill
summed up in an email.

rise,” he said. “If more students
come, then they have to have

as a reason for some of the
increase. However, according
to the CPI Inflation Calculator,
inflation can only account for
17.82 percent of the 72 percent
increase at Radford in the last
decade.
“For it to be rising that

cast of characters moments to
shine in the process.
Without giving away
spoilers, some fans may feel like
certain characters didn’t have
much of a role, but in thinking

They serve entrees that include
chicken, beef, seafood, pork, and
vegetarian options.
The Mexican restaurant also
has a free salsa bar, a favorite
among many. They often provide
at least 10 different options that
patrons are free to try.
With the salsa bar and
generous portions, El Charro is
of the future, some characters
will play a more significant
role in newer movies which is
why the original characters get
the most focus.
There is an over-reliance
of CGI, which is noticeable at
times, but it doesn’t take away
too much from the over the
top epic battle scenes, which
has moments of breaking
into character building and
emotional moments. The
pay off from those moments
strengthens the outcomes
immensely and gives
everything more depth.
The length of the movie,
despite being 3 hours long, is
sure to fill even the hungriest
person.
Sal’s
Pizza is always a crowd-
pleaser, and Sal’s does it like no
other.
This pizzeria has many
beautiful signature pies every
day of the week. Sal’s provides
many toppings, such as spinach,
feta, Italian pepperoni, eggplant,
actually well paced. It doesn’t
feel dragged out or boring. It is
a dense movie that does what
it needs to do without making
you feel ready to leave.
Endgame is by far the most
ambitious, emotional, and
intense movie in the MCU to
date. It amazingly wraps up
years of superhero stories and
does so with a lot of heart and
confidence. Though Stan Lee
is gone, this movie gives me
hope that the future prequels,
sequels, and spin-off will do
him proud. The
Tartan

BT’s has become a favorite
among Radford University
students for multiple reasons.
The restaurant is a very short
walk from campus, making it
easier for students to get to the
restaurant.
This full-service restaurant
offers entrees ranging from
soups, salads, burgers, sirloin,
and sandwiches. On the
weekends, BT’s also has a brunch
menu including items, such as
omelets and pancakes.
BT’s doubles as a bar and has
a late-night menu, along with

an excellent atmosphere for a
weekend night hang out.
Brick House Pizza
Finally, Brick House Pizza
provides wood-fired pizza made
from handmade dough, made
daily. The pizzeria serves their
pizza garnished with many
different vegetables and other
toppings.
Along with their pizza, Brick
House Pizza serves wings. The
hot sauce that covers these
wings are also handmade in the
restaurant. Brick House Pizza’s
wings are also cooked in their
wood oven.
Live music can be regularly
found at this restaurant, and it’s
also a great place to watch many
different sports games.
You may notice that there
aren’t a lot of good places to
dine at or near Radford, but
here is our list of must-eat
places. With all these amazing
restaurants offered nearby the
campus, you’re bound to find
one that you really enjoy. The

Growing Strong at the Graduate Art Show

n Mar. 20, Radford
University hosted the
Graduate Art Show
exhibition in the McConnell
library.
The art on display was made
by graduate art students from
the Radford University Graduate
Student Art Association.
Radford students gathered
around for light refreshments
and to examine the art which
the pieces were made during the
students time at Radford. Some
were experimental pieces, as
well as different types of media.
When speaking with Reilly
Gordon, one of the graduate
students in the program, The
Tartan asked which of her
artworks she liked the most, and
which one she enjoyed making
the most.
Gordon replied, “In Growing
Strong I was inspired by the
model. It was her dream and
goal as a psychologist to focus
on how community gardens
in inner cities can help the
emotional and nutritional
health of children.”

Gordon continued saying,
“I painted her with vegetables,
plants, growing around her
and her hair also turns into the
Chicago skyline because that’s
where she was from. So it’s a
very personal piece, and I think
it has a very sunny and uplifting
mood, which accurately portrays
the model.”
When asked about the other
painting she said, “In Serenity
Amongst Chaos, I was feeling
very overwhelmed and confused
and wanted to gain some clarity
amongst all of my stresses. I
painted myself with a composed
and stoic expression, wanting
to be strong in the face of my
challenges and free to grow from
them.”
“The Lion represents that
strength but is also roaring,
letting out frustrations, and the
birds represent freedom and
letting go,” stated Gordon. “This
piece was very expressive, and
at first, I really didn’t like it, but
later when I was in a better place
emotionally, I started to love it.”

Gordon went on to explain
her creative process, “Most of
my work focuses on the female
experience. I like watercolor and
use pens as well. Watercolor has
this quality that can capture
color and expression very well
and my pieces tend to be very
emotional, so it’s a natural
medium for my work. The pen
has this great mark making
quality, and my work is very
narrative based, I’m trying to tell
a story, so it naturally connects
to graphic novel imagery which
I am personally influenced by.”
Gordon also says that she
enjoys her time in the graduate
program, “Radford’s MFA
program is small, but I like
that aspect because there are
more opportunities to really be
an individual and get to know
everyone in the department and
the program.”

Motivating Yourself

e all get to that point
in the semester
where we have zero
motivation to do anything.
The lack of motivation can
cause you to neglect many of
your responsibilities. Sometimes
it is hard to motivate yourself
to keep going through the
semester. Even though it is hard,
it is possible for you to get that
motivation and drive back.
Here are some ways to get
that motivation back throughout
the semester:
Write Down Your Goals
One way that you can
motivate yourself throughout
the semester is to write down
your goals.
When you write down your
goals, it reminds you of what you
are working towards. Putting
your goal list in your planner,
hanging it up in your room or
even your bathroom helps with
remembering them.
An alternative to the goal
list is a vision board. A vision
board is a visual form of your
goal list. You can use pictures
and words to represent your
goals. Having this vision board
in a place you look at every day
is also essential.
Just like the goals list, having
that constant reminder helps
you remember why you started
your journey and what is in store
once you complete your goals.
Take a Time Out
Another way to motivate
yourself throughout the
semester is to take time for
yourself. Sometimes we get
so busy and overwhelmed, we
forget to take care of ourselves.
If you do not take care of
yourself, then you can get to the
point where you do not want to
do anything. Even though you
may have assignments to turn
in or tests coming up, you still
have to take time out of your

busy schedule to relax.
Try to take time out of your
day to do something that is not
school related. For instance, you
could watch television, play a
videogame, or even read your
favorite book. Taking a little
time out for yourself each day
helps to keep your life balanced.
Celebrate Your Victories
Celebrating your victories
big or small is another way to
motivate yourself through the
semester.
Every time you do well
on a test or complete your
assignments, celebrate and
reward yourself. Treat yourself
by going out to eat or even buying
yourself something. It does not
matter how you decide to reward
yourself, just celebrating the
small victories helps you stay
motivated and ensures you that
you can do anything that you set
your mind to.
Talk to Loved Ones
Having friends or family
that you trust and can talk to
is a way to motivate yourself.
Being around people you enjoy
can take your mind off of all
the things that you are going
through. It is a way for you to
vent about your worries and
frustration.
Having someone to vent to
also helps with the process of
getting out of the rut you were
in.
Get a Role Model
Another way to motivate
yourself is to have a good role
model or mentor.
Having someone who has
made it to the place that you
are trying to get to is inspiring.
Seeing or knowing the process
that this person went through to
get to where they are today can
help you with your journey.
Sometimes we all need to
push the reset button. It may be
hard, but remember that you can
make it through the semester. The

continued to be dedicated
to making sure that its
wonderful students have access
to all of the resources that one
may need to succeed at this
institution, however, here are
my top five vital resources that
you should be using now.
1. Student Counseling
Services
The counseling center at
Radford University offers free,
confidential mental health
services for students while
also providing many learning
opportunities for students to
grow as individuals.
Whether it’s working on
relationships with peers or even
developing yourself to become
the best person you can be, the
counseling center can help you.
The counseling centers walk-in
hours are from Monday to Friday
from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in the lower
level of Tyler Hall.
2. The Harvey Knowledge
Center
This great resource,
formerly known as the Learning
Assistance and Resource Center
(LARC), is accessible to all
Radford University students.
At the HKC, workers focus
on helping students develop
their learning skills while also
gaining confidence. They also
consult students so that they
can navigate positively when
faced with a tough course or
assignment.
They offer various services
for students such as one-on-
one assistance, as well as small
groups on multiple subjects
such as science and math. This
center will even provide you
tips on how to study, as well as
time management skills when
working on your academics; it
won’t do anything but help you
show progress academically.
HKC is located on the 4th
floor of the McConnell Library.
3. The Center for
Accessibility Services (CAS)
CAS focuses on serving and
supporting individuals who seek
reasonable accommodations
so that those individuals can
get a fair Radford University
experience.
The workers here aim
to create comfortable
environments for the center
that are diverse, accessible, and
inclusive which can be found in
Russell Hall (3rd-floor Suites
301-327).
4. McConnell Library
The McConnell Library here
at Radford strives to focus on
helping students and faculty
succeed. The wonderful workers
often focus on supporting
research, scholarship, and
they are even open to the
consideration of new ideas.
During my time here
at Radford University, I’ve
overheard many students
mention how they’ve never
stepped inside of our library,
and I am surprised.
Being a Library Advisor
this semester has helped me
understand that the library
is one of the best, if not the
best, resource here at Radford
University for students. They
have many settings for visitors,
even if you’re looking for a
comfortable environment to
study or a place for a group
venture in the library.
They are open 7 days a week
and they also offer extended
hours during exam periods.
5. Substance Abuse and
Violence Education Support
(SAVES)
The SAVES office here at
Radford University focuses
on dropping destructive
significances related to
substance abuse or violence
through campus-wide proposals
that address issues.
Many students think this
office is a negative place, but they
want students to be successful.
They offer some great amenities
such as educational resources,

along with various groups that
focus on specific situations.

Men’s Basketball 2019 Season Recap

he Radford Men’s
Basketball team had yet
another successful season
to add to their continuous
streak of winning seasons. The
Highlanders were fortunate
enough to make it to the Big
South Conference Championship
for the second year in a row.
Unfortunately, the outcome
was not as bright as last season’s,
as they fell to Gardner-Webb in a
tightly contested battle.
The Highlanders’ home
court was overflowing with fans
from all over, including former
Virginia Tech Hokies head
football coach, Frank Beamer.

Women’s Basketball 2019 Season Recap

he Radford University
women’s basketball team
has officially concluded
the 2018-19 season after their
loss in the first round of the
NCAA tournament on Mar. 24.
As the Tartan looks back
on the season, we would
like to honor the women’s
basketball team for some of
their outstanding achievements
en route to making history this
season!
The Kinston, NC native
led the entire Big South in
rebounding, snatching an
impressive 10.2 boards per
game. Rivers also led the Big
South conference in double-
doubles with a whopping 13. Her
consistent performances earned
her first team all-conference
honors as well. She averaged
12.0 points throughout the
regular season.
Rivers continued to
dominate throughout the Big
South tournament. After her 14
points, 14 rebound performance
in the championship against
Campbell, she was then named
the Most Valuable Player of
the entire tournament after
recording her 15th double-
double of the season. Rivers
scored a whopping 57 points and
snatched 37 rebounds in three
ended with a final score of 76-
65. In Ed Polite Jr.’s last time
suiting up for the Highlanders,
the 6’5 senior had 15 points, five
rebounds, and three blocks.
Head Coach Mike Jones
led the Highlanders to an
impressive 22-11 overall record
while remaining at the top of the
Big South, tying with Campbell
at a 12-4 against the rest of the
conference.
They posted a win percentage
of .667 keeping an outstanding
11-2 for games inside the
Dedmon Center and also sharing
the Big South regular-season
title for the first time since the
2008-09 season.
The Highlanders can rest
easy knowing they had one of the
greatest to ever play for Radford
in Polite Jr. He was awarded
All-Big South First Team and
Defensive Player of the year.
He averaged a career-high 13.4
points a game, 9.5 rebounds

Senior guard/forward
Destinee Walker has been
the main focus on this unit
all season. She has been an
extremely consistent player
during her tenure and has
accepted every responsibility

14.0 points per game in her 33
games played.
Redshirt junior Sydney
Nunley had a monster season
this year after sitting out
the entire 18-19 season with
a medical redshirt. The 6’4
center was second in the entire
conference in double-doubles
with 12, only one behind her
teammate Lydia Rivers.
Nunley went on to score over
22 points in three games this
season against Hampton, High
Point, and Mount St. Marys.
Nunley’s standout season also
earned her Big South second
team all-conference honors!
Redshirt junior Jen Falconer
has been dominating in the
classroom and on the court this
season. Falconer was a major
key this season in setting up
and running the Highlander
offense from her guard position.
She often gets her teammates
involved, and her outstanding
per game and ranked top-10 in
the Big South in steals (1.5) and
blocks (1.2) per game as well.
Polite Jr. also became Radford
University’s career leader in
total rebounds with 1,119.
He has also been selected to
participate in the 2019 Dos Equis
3x3U National Championship
game scheduled for April 5-7.
The players will compete at a
chance to take home a hundred
thousand dollars in prize money.
Carlik Jones, as well as Polite
Jr., have been named to the
2019 National Association of
Basketball Coaches Division 1
All-District 3 First Team. This
marks the first time in Radford
history that more than one
player has been named to an
NABC All-District team in the
same season.
Jones, who additionally won
First Team All-Big South Honors,
followed up his Freshman
of the Year campaign quite
defense is nothing to overlook.
Senior Khiana Johnson has
played a major role in running
the offense from her guard
position as well.
Johnson has been able to
contribute on both the defensive
and offensive sides of the ball.
Her speed and quickness give
her an advantage over many
players she faces as well as her
high basketball IQ in which
often makes great decisions. She
went on to average 11.0 points
per game this season, and her
outstanding gameplay earned
her Big South second team all-
conference honors this season.
