Unit 2: Early Greek Civilizations

Textbook Reading Assignment: Culture and Values: Chapter 2, “The Rise of Greece”
Wed 9/11: Catch up day. We’ll have a brief review and then a quiz on the material we’ve
discussed thus far in our first unit, “Prehistory and Early Civilizations.”.

Fri 9/13: Today we’ll discuss some of the Greek myths from the packet I gave you, and try
and figure out what they might tell us about the people who venerated them. Due
Today -- Read & respond assignment #2.1: Read the primary text, “Some Greek
Myths” (handout). Then try and answer these questions: What is a myth? What
kinds of things are myths about? And… what is it about Bulls?
Mon 9/16: Today we’ll look at some totally beautiful examples of Minoan Culture. Ideally you
should have read chapter 2 of our textbook by today.

Wed 918: Today we’ll be discussing the Mycenaeans and the Trojan War.

Fri 9/20: Today we’ll be focusing on the nature of heroism in ancient Greece, focusing on a
selection from one the most influential books of all time, the Iliad. Due Today --
Read & respond assignment #2.2: Read the selections from the Iliad I handed out.
Then try and answer one of these questions: What role do the Gods play in the
selections of The Iliad we’re looking at? What contrasting forms of heroism do you
see?

Mon 9/23: More on the Iliad.

Wed 9/25: Today we’ll look at some examples of the visual arts of Classical Greece.

Fri 9/27: Today we’ll focus on a unique and innovative idea: that of the Polis. Due Today --
Read & respond assignment #2.3: Read the first selection from the handout, “Two
Views of the Polis: Athens and Sparta,” then answer the question: What makes an
Athenian, according to Pericles?

Mon 9/30: Today we’ll look at a very different kind of Polis – that of Sparta. Due Today --
Read & respond assignment #2.4: Read the second selection from the handout,
“Two Views of the Polis: Athens and Sparta,” then answer the question: What makes
a Spartan, according to Plutarch?

Wed 10/2: Today we’ll have a review and then take a brief quiz on the material we’ve covered
in Unit 2, “The Rise of the Greeks.”
