Topographic map:
We downloaded a topographic map using Google Earth.

And then choose an area that we like to delineate.

Location: 117.91 miles West of Fairbanks, Alaska, USA.

Steps in Delineating a Watershed:

1. Determine outlet
2. Identify ridges and valleys
3. Identify high points
4. Draw streams
5. Connect high points with the outlet
LENGTH OF THE WATERSHED:
Using Google Earth, we measured the watershed length. From the highest point of the
watershed to the outlet.

We were able to get a length of 99, 018 ft.

L = 99, 018 ft

SLOPE:
𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
SLOPE =

SHAPE OF WATERSHED:

SHAPE FACTOR (𝐿𝑙 )

𝐿𝑙 = (L * 𝐿𝑐𝑎 )0.3

We must determine first the centroid of our watershed in order for us to measure 𝐿𝑐𝑎 .
Using the data we gathered from www.earthpoint.us, we were able to determine our
centroid. From the centroid we create a perpendicular line to the nearest stream. Then
measure the length from the intersection to the outlet. We got a length of 𝐿𝑐𝑎 = 51, 378 ft.

𝐿𝑙 = (L * 𝐿𝑐𝑎 )0.3

= (99,018ft * 51, 378ft)0.3

𝐿𝑙 = 816.48

Using Google Earth, we measured a watershed area of A = 1, 461, 859, 264𝑓𝑡 2 .

HORTON’S LAW:

Horton’s law states that all outter streams are first order streams. If a large order and
small order meets, the larger order stream should be followed.
TOTAL STREAM LENGTH (𝐿 𝑇 ):

We were able to determine the different lengths of our streams using Google Earth. We
sum all up to get the total Stream Length (𝐿 𝑇 ).

𝐿 𝑇 = 181, 502 ft

DRAINAGE DENSITY:
𝐿 𝑇 = 181, 502 ft

A = 1, 461, 859, 264𝑓𝑡 2

D= =
A 1, 461, 859, 264𝑓𝑡 2

D = 1.24𝑥10−4 / ft
