You are on page 1of 10

Today, let s stick to the most important meal of the day, BREAKFAST.

You won t believe how easy it is to make:

Porridge
French Toast
So get your notebooks out and write it all down.
For simple and yummy porridge, here s what you need:
Half cup semolina or sooji (You can use wheat germ as well; it s healthy!)
Pinch of salt
Sugar to taste
1/2 l milk
Little butter or ghee
You will also need:
A heavy base pan (those non-stick ones are best)
Now here s how it s done.
Heat your pan till you know it s hot. Then take it off the heat and put your sooji
in it. Now here s the tricky part. Sooji tends to burn if the pan is too hot. So
make sure you keep stirring the sooji to roast it. Do that till the sooji roasts
completely and turns golden. (This should take approx 10-15 mins.) Add a pinch
of salt.
Then put back the pan on a low flame, keep stirring. Then add the milk according
to the consistency you like. (Some like it watery, some like it firm. I persona
lly like the watery version) Add the sugar according to taste. Keep stirring til
l it comes to a boil and till the sooji and the milk are well blended together.
Serve hot!
For delicate French Toast, this is what you need:
Bread (interestingly bread that is a day old tastes much better than fresh bread
)
2 Eggs
Milk
Sugar to taste
Pinch of salt
You will also need a tawa or flat pan to fry it up. Keep a clean kitchen towel o
r tissue also ready.
How to make:
First, whip your eggs with a fork. Add a dash of salt. Then pour in some milk an
d whip some more. You basically need to get a flowing consistency of the mix. Ad
d some sugar, as much as you like for your taste. It always helps to put your fi
nger in the mix and touch it to the tip of your tongue to see if the sugar is ri
ght. (At this time, it would be good to forget you are working with raw eggs.)
Once your mix is ready, you can proceed to the next step. Keep everything ready
in hand, because the process can get messy if you miss anything.
In the tawa, brush some softened butter or ghee or even vegetable oil. Dip the b
read completely in the egg mix. Coat both sides. Make sure you don t keep it dippe
d for long, or the bread will break.
Place the coated bread on the tawa on high flame. Turn it around quickly and the
n lower the flame. After that just wait till the bread becomes a nice golden or
brown colour.
What I usually do is, get the first one off the tawa, and taste some of it to se
e if it suits my taste. Check for sugar, and whether it is cooked right through
the bread. You don t want the inner portions to be soggy.
One you got your taste right, fry up the rest of the bread slices. Use tissue to
wipe off any excess oil. Serve hot with a smear of butter and honey on the top.
Oh and one last tip.
I have a secret stash of recipes in my kitchen. A collection of tried and true r
ecipes that have been given a thumbs up by Snackers of all ages. This recipe for
banana bread is like an old friend, someone I can always count on to pull throu
gh, flawless nearly every time. And who doesn t always have a few extra speckled b
rown, maturing bananas in the kitchen? I often adapt this recipe to make cupcakes
for birthday parties or school events. (Kids are enticed by the label cupcake vers
us muffin , its amazing what a little word play can accomplish.) Although this brea
d is not super-duper healthy by standards of a health nut its delicious and makes
a semi-nutritious snack when served with fresh fruit and tea. Happy baking!
BEST BANANA BREAD EVER
2c whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon, optional
1/2c butter, room temperature
1 c sugar
2 eggs
2 or 3 ripe bananas, mashed
1/3 c milk+1 tsp lemon juice or vinegar (could substitute buttermilk for this co
mbo)
1/2 c nuts, chopped
1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease bread pan or muffin cups with butter.
2. Stir flour with soda and salt in medium bowl.
3. Cream butter and gradually add sugar, mix well. Add eggs and bananas, blen
d.
4. Slowly and alternately fold in flour mixture then milk mixture. Beginning
and ending with dry ingredients.
5. Fold in nuts. Pour batter into bread pan or muffin cups.
6. Bake 55 minutes for bread or 20 minutes for muffins.

, keep cheese slice on it, cut paneer in the slice shape ( square)put roundly cu

the other slice and then apply mint chutny if u hv made or just leave as it is.T
hen put this slice on the other slice where u have put all other things. Just pr
ess it for a second and cut it in a shape u want it. just eat it or pack it for
the office can hv in breakfast or in Lunch. Its very light but stuffy if taken wit

2. Potato, Paneer, onion, hari mirchi, hara dhaniya.
remove ski of 2-3 Boil Potatos ( infact every household should have boiled potat

All you singles, need one dish meal? Try this one:
Light fry about 250 gms of whatever mixed vegetables you have in ghee (not bitte
r gourd though), with 1 Tomato, 5/6 garlic petals, 1? ginger, 2/3 green chillies
, and 5/6 whole black paper. Add equal amount of half cooked rice. Drown the mix
ture with hot milk. Cook until rice is done.
Boast that this is Rice Strogannof veg. You can add some prawns for flavour whil
e saute-ing, still better, for Prawn rice Strogannof. Nice when you need to empt
y your fridge before you change residences also.

to show already used to be done more than sixty-seventy years ago even in villag
es where bread was not avaiable but wheat CHAPATI would be handy to make somethi

who never peeped in their kitchens, may find it fascinating.

Swell! I am just starting out on being single again. I need more of such easy DI
Y jhat-pat healthy recipes. Thanks for these, although I already knew about the
French toast. I have one of my own which I like a lot. Scrambled eggs in Milk. J
ust pour half a cup of milk in a shallow non-stick pan and heat for a minute, br
eak in two eggs(or more) and stir on a low flame with a spatula, sprinkle salt t
o taste and keep stirring. You may need to lift the pan off the fire to avoid it
burning. I like to keep it a little soggy myself. You can heat it till you have
the desired consistency. Enjoy!

I have been making these dishes from ages. Yupe they are real good and in times
of fast cooking ti-fin items they are good.
I think not only these but fried rice can be make fast too. You r thinking about
the chopping u have to do dont worry about that get a food processor or chopper
it comes real handy. Just keep the cooker for preparing rice. Take a pan with g
hee/oil add these veg s or even one veg like carrot or capsicum (these I have trie
d) and fry for some time remember not to fry them out completely toss them aroun
d in the pan and add salt and any masala(packed one will do) and finally add ric
e. Mix and keep the lid closed for some time(2-5 mins). Its done.

Another quick fix, not necessarily for breakfast.
Pasta with broth
Preparation time 30 mins tops.
you will need
-Pasta (whichever kind, I prefer elbow)
-Your favourite Soup or (veg/chicken) stock packets
-cilantro/coriander/dhania optionally for seasoning
-salted butter
cook pasta as instructed on Pack
-qty bowlful to serve 1
-similar to Maggi, without adding masala
-drain the excess water.
-run cold water and drain immediately
-keep pasta aside.
-toss in a teaspoon of salted butter
Prepare the soup/broth , use 2/3rd the water indicated so as to decrease the con
sistency of the soup(not make it too watery)
add chopped vegetables/spices* for flavor.
cook till veggies are boiled.
mix and serve hot.
(season with cilantro finely chopped.)
* based on your preference , idea is to use for flavor.

Hi Everybody,
Another recipe that I commonly use is:- Take a full sweet bun and cut it into tw
o half or take two slices of bread. Mix some unfrozen butter or cheez with a lit
tle tomato ketchup, beat it nicely and apply it between the two halves of the bu
n. Then sprinkle some salted mixture or broken pieces of kurkure on it. And serv
e it with chilly souse. You don t even have to use the gas stove or microwave for
it.
