8. Tanya decides to join a gym for a three-month trial period after reading a brochure stating that exercise is
related to positive mental health. The psychological benefits of aerobic exercise (e.g. running,
swimming, and cycling) are listed in the brochure as improved self-esteem, more restful sleep, and relief
of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Tanya is aiming to develop a regular exercise routine of at least three gym sessions a week because she
wants to feel stronger and more energetic, as well as less stressed and anxious. She is an outgoing person
who enjoys meeting new people. She is worried about discussing her decision to join the gym with her
friends and family, because most of them think that only people with too much money and time go to the
gym.

Discuss the factors that may improve Tanya’s chances of maintaining a regular exercise routine.
Your response should include a:

 description of biological factors that influence behaviour;

 discussion of the role of basic processes in influencing behaviour;

SECTION B: EXTENDED-RESPONSE QUESTION

(20 marks)

Answer the following question in this section on the pages provided. You should spend 5 minutes planning and 20 minutes writing.

9.
Kyla is a postgraduate psychology student with depression. She developed this at the end of her second year
of undergraduate studies when she experienced her first disappointing grade that made her lose her self
confidence and doubt her own abilities. Her experiences impacted on her studies in several ways. She found
it difficult to get motivated to attend lectures and missed several weeks of lessons across the semester as she
began to feel as though it was useless going back.

“It was incredibly difficult at time to get out of bed and leave the house. I didn’t think it would matter if I was
there anyway as no one would miss me, and my friends had stopped calling me to check if I was coming.”
“In lectures if I did go, I found it difficult to concentrate and I often got headaches. I was always feeling
sleepy because I didn’t ever get a good night’s sleep”

When Kyla attended mental health-related lectures or seminars as part of her coursework she felt very
uncomfortable: “It made me realise that I was worse than everyone else, and that everyone else must think
I’m weak, because they were coping and I wasn’t”. “Young people are supposed to be able to cope with
leaving home and going to uni, and I was hopeless.”

She chose to disclose her problems with 2 close friends who gave her the support that she needed at times.
“If it was not for Todd and Julie taking me out for coffee once a week I would not have got through my
degree.”

Kyla did try the university’s counselling service, but they were only able to offer short term, subject specific
advice and she was told that she needed more substantial therapy. Despite these problems in the first years of
Uni, Kyla succeeded and with the support of friends and a therapist overcame the barriers she encountered
and is currently working as a Psychologist in a large hospital.

Discuss depression. Your discussion must include the following:

 Factors that may be the cause of depression using a person level of explanation

 Two symptoms of depression that Kyla may experience using the biological level of explanation.

 Describe one psychological intervention that could help Kyla in dealing with her depression, using the
basic processes level of explanation.
 Two protective factors using the sociocultural level of explanation that would have enabled Kyla to
overcome and depression and avoid symptoms returning again in the future.
