com Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s promising absurdity: Remaining joyfully on the surface “There is ‘we’ in laughter, ‘you’ and ‘I’ in tears” Metin Üstündağ Humor, according to Deleuze, works as a destruction tool for subjective positions. In contrast with irony, humor does not aim a recognition, which needs a subject to recognize and to differentiate the false or inappropriate from the ‘true’ or ‘appropriate’, because it does not have irony’s assumption that there is an original meaning to turn to. On the contrary, humor hangs in the void of absurdity. In Logic of Sense he says “For if irony is the co-extensiveness of being with the individual, or of the I with the representation, humor is the co-extensiveness of sense with nonsense.” In this paper I will argue that Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy presents itself as a perfect example of this description of humor in literature. This paper aims to point out the possible viewing of the world(s) that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy creates is one that embraces all the differences of singularities by suspending fixed meanings and significations. These singularities join together in a ‘present’ moment, a ‘now’ that can not be represented. Guide’s humor distributes itself through the concrete sphere of meaning and any subjective position that holds meaning, and representation dissolves. Egos are decentralized, disseminating in another sphere created by the realization of the absurdity of our commonsense which says our meanings as well as meaning giving mechanisms are fixed.
It produces the effect and even the event of a crash. In the crash there is nothing but the event/coincidence itself.
. It loosens our fixation on significations and serves as a gaze of surface. becomes a vehicle for us to sense the fact that human beings’ meaning giving mechanism is just another thing amongst things. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a guide to non-sense of meanings. There is no hight or depth to existence. Humor becomes an accident machine. There is no order of things or a higher truth we originated from. Our mode of existence is an effect of coincidences.Humor here.
