~Program~
Co-President Debbie Koo introduced
today’s speakers Dr Cynthia Mahoney,
MD and Pleasant Hill Rotarian, Dave
Deutscher. Both are very active in
making the populace aware of climate
change issues. Cynthia is the Contra
Costa Chapter Group Lead of Citizens
Climate Lobby; a nationwide
organization and David was involved in
making a video to raise awareness from
a business leader’s perspective of the
advantages of adopting energy
efficiency in construction.

Their presentation was chock full of

informational slides showing that
burning fossil fuels is affecting our
climate by increasing greenhouse
gases, raising temperatures, increasing
the acidity of rainfall and the oceans,
increasing the intensity of
storms/flooding, and raising ocean
levels by melting glaciers and the Arctic
& Antarctic ice. We have all seen
images and discourses about this topic
in the news and in newspapers,
periodicals and television. Parallels were drawn between the basic
Rotary Principles to impress upon us
that Rotarians can act to help limit the
impact of climate change. Indeed, all
humanity must act and act quickly to
counteract and perhaps reverse the
effects of climate change.
