Sudarshan kriya is the core of the Art of Living approach. It is a powerful breathing-based technique. One of the breath's great secrets is that for every feeling or emotion there is a corresponding rhythm in the breath. Sudarshan Kriya incorporates specific natural rhythms of breath to release stress and bring the mind to the present moment. Sudarshan Kriya is said to have been revealed to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar during a spell of silent meditation that he had gone into for 10 days in 1982. The Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful rhythmic breathing technique that facilitates physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being is an integral part of the Art of Living programs. It is today universally acclaimed for its effectiveness in eliminating stress, and bringing one completely into the present moment. As Sri Sri Ravi Shankar puts it, the Sudarshan Kriya came to him like an inspiration to bridge the gap between the worlds of inner silence, and outer expression of life. ‘Su’ means proper, ‘darshan’ means vision, and ‘Kriya’ is a purifying practice. The Sudarshan Kriya is therefore a purifying practice, whereby one receives a proper vision of one’s true self. This unique breathing practice is a potent energizer. Every cell becomes fully oxygenated, and flooded with new life, bringing a sense of joy in the moment. The rhythmic breathing pattern of Sudarshan Kriya harmonizes the rhythms of the body, and emotions, and brings them in tune with the rhythms of

nature. The breath connects the body, and mind. Just as emotions affect the patterns of breathing, one can bring about changes in their mental and behavioural patterns by altering the rhythms of their breath. It flushes out anger, anxiety, and worry; leaving the mind completely relaxed, and energized. According to a research on Sudarshan Kriya by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) of India, it states that Sudarshan Kriya and accompanying breathing techniques (SK&P) demonstrated a 68-73% success rate in treating people suffering from depression, regardless of severity of the depression. Substantial relief was experienced in three weeks. By one month, patients were considered to be in remission. At three months, the patients remained Asymptomatic and stable. Furthermore, SK&P produced highly beneficial biological effects on brain and hormone function. Dr. Janakiramaiah, M.D., Ph.D., D.P.H., psychiatrist, medical researcher, and Director of the Yoga Research Group at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS) of India has conducted several of these studies. He concluded that Sudarshan Kriya has “remarkable therapeutic effects” and “is clinically feasible and effective. It has the potential to become a first-line treatment of dysthymic (chronic, mild depression) patients and possibly in mild and moderate forms of major depressive disorder." Benefits of Sudarshan Kriya The practice is instrumental in creating a sense of harmony in the body, mind and spirit. After the practice, participants commonly report feeling calm and centered, with a clearer vision of the world and themselves. * Greater creativity and clarity of mind * Reduced stress and tension * More ease and joy in personal relationships How to do Sudarshan Kriya Take vajrasana position. Spine firm, eyes closed. Take long breaths in, count till eight. Exhale slowly, count till eight. Regulate this for a while. It is best to close your eyes to cut off external stimuli and turn the attention inward. This posture makes the movement of attention between the brain and spinal cord hindrance free. It engages the muscles in the neck and the shoulders naturally, relieving stress related pressure and helps in breathing freely.

The first stage begins with the relaxation of the throat and sternum. Try to concentrate on the inhalation and exhalation of breath, through rhythmic slow breathing. Ensure that the time for inhalation and exhalation is about the same. A cycle is one inhalation, followed by one exhalation. After 20 cycles of stage one, you are ready for the next stage of the Kriya. The second stage begins with normal inhalation followed by deep exhalation. Here, exhalation lasts for a longer time than inhalation. Be aware that the sternum and the rest of the body including the back have to remain as relaxed as possible. Complete 20 cycles of stage two, slowly and rhythmically. As you move into the third stage, deep inhalation is followed by normal exhalation. Inhalation takes a longer time than exhalation, within a cycle. The same cautions as second stage apply. Complete 20 cycles of stage three, slowly and rhythmically. Go into the last stage with deep inhalation followed by deep exhalation. The time for inhalation and exhalation is about the same. This is done for 20 cycles also. Bhastrika Pranayam. Move arms up and down, inhaling when arms are up, exhaling when arms are down. Breathe rapidly. Do 30-50 breaths. Pause and repeat two more times. Breathe very fast. Slow down after third round. Chant Om three times and move into meditation. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The research summary can be found here. Art Of Living's Yes Plus course offers Sudarshan Kriya and other techniques to improve physical and mental well-being; cost: Rs 2000 for three days; Rs 3,000 for seven days.
