answers sequentially.

1. a) Define piezoelectric effect? Write any two engineering applications of ultrasonics.

b) Define Gauss law and write the conditions that are to be satisfied to apply Gauss law.

c) A cyclotron has an oscillator frequency of 12x106 Hz and its Dee radius is 0.53 m.
What is the value of magnetic induction needed to accelerate duetron in it? Given
that mass of the duetron is 3.34x10-27 Kg

d) A charge of 4 x 10-4C moves at 15 revolutions per second in a circle of radius 10cm.

what is the magnetic flux density at the center of the coil.

e) Explain how elliptically polarized light can be converted in to circularly polarized light
with a diagram.

f) A half wave plate is constructed for a wavelength of 6000Ǻ. For what wavelength
does it work as a quarter wave plate?

g) Distinguish stimulated and spontaneous emissions.

h) What is the advantage of graded index fiber over multimode step index fiber?

i) What are cooper pairs? Explain how they are formed and their significance in

j) Why the properties of nano materials are different from bulk materials?

2. a) Deduce an expression for electric field intensity due to i) line of charge, ii) charged

sheet, iii) spherical shell using Gauss law (4+4+4 M)

b) The nucleus of an atom of gold has a radius R = 6.2 x 10-15 m and a positive charge

q = Ze, where the atomic number Z of gold is 79. Find the magnitude of the electric
field from the center of the gold nucleus at a distance of about twice its

radius. Assume that the nucleus is spherical and that the charge is distributed

uniformly throughout its volume. (4M)

3. a) Describe the construction and working condition of cyclotron. Explain how magnetic

field in cyclotron can influence the KE of the particle with out changing the speed of

the particle. (12 M)

b) An electron of energy of 1000 eV describes a circle in a field of magnetic induction

0.02 T. Calculate the radius of the circle. Given that specific charge of electron is

1.76x10-11 C/Kg (4 M)

4. a) State and explain stoke’s principle. Show that with monochromatic light the
interference patterns on the reflected and transmitted light in thin film are
complementary. (12 M)

b) In Newton’s rings experiment the diameter of 5th ring is 0.3 cm and diameter of 25th
ring is 0.8 cm. If radius of curvature is 100 cm, find the wavelength monochromatic

light used. (4 M)

5. a) What do you understand by population inversion? With the help of energy level
diagram, explain how He-Ne laser works. (12 M)

indices of the material of its core and cladding is 0.05. Calculate the refractive index

of the material of the core. (4 M)

6. a) Distinguish between soft and hard superconductors. Perfect diamagnetism is more

fundamental property than perfect conductivity to assert that a material is in

superconducting state explains. (4+8 M)

b) Distinguish LED & LCD. (4 M)

7. a) Draw circuit diagram of magnetostrictive oscillator and describe how ultrasonics are
produced using this technique. (12 M)
