When a person. Walks, he loses energy to the road surface in the form of impact, vibration, Solid etc, due to the transfer of his weight on to the road surface, through: {oot fills on the ground during every step. This energy can be:tapped and ‘converted in the usable form such as in electrical form. Tn ordgr to develop a technique to hamess foot step energy, @ foot step J electtivity generating device was developed in the Reactor Control Division, BARC. This device, if embedded in the footpath, can convert foot impact nergy into clectrical form. The working principle is simple, When a Pedestrian steps on the top plate of the device, the plate will dip down slightly due to the weight of the pedestrian. The downward movement of the plate results in rotation of the shaft of an electrical alternator, fitted in the , to produce electrical energy. The top plate reverts back to its original n duc to negating springs provided in the device. If such devices are embedded in places where there is continuous human traffic such as in city malls, railway platforms, city footpaths etc., the electricity generated from these devices can be used for strect lights. The device developed at the Reactor Control nis shown in Fig. 1. The device was tested and it was demonstrated that the energy generated by this device can be stored in a 12 V lead acid battery. A 100 watt, 230 volt bulb was connected to the battery through an inverter, The device was operated by persons walking over to it ‘The bulb automatically lights up when the battery reaches its full voltage. ‘The bulb remained lighted tll the battery was exhausted. However, if there is continuous movement of pedestrians over the device, the bulb can he kept ) ®lighted continuously. Fig. 1: Foot Step Electric Converiee DUviea = )PERATION [ihe working of the Foot Stop Electric fefeonverter (FSEC) is demonstrated in Pephotographs in Fig. 2. The right side Photograph shows the foot touching the top plate, without applying weight. The left side fhotograph shows the foot when full weight of Fig. 2; Operation of Foot Step Electric | Converter (a) After applying weight (Bulb lights up) (b) Before applying weight (No Tight) ‘the body is transferred to the top plate. A 6 W, 12 V bulb connected to the output of the alternator glows, to indicate the electric output when foot load is applied. The unit is designed to generate full power pulse when actuated by a person weighing nearly 60 kg. An experimental plot of voltage vs time was generated, by using ‘an oscilloscope. Using voltage data and the oad (a resistor), a typical plot of power vs. time was gencrated. The plot is shown in Fig. 3. ENERGY STORING The power generated by the foot step generator can be stored in an energy storing device. The output of the generator was fed to a 12 V lead acid hattery, through an ac-de converter bridge. Initially, the battery + Was completely discharged. Then, the FSEC was operated by applying foot load and energy was stored in the battery. A 100 W, 230V bulb was connected to the battery through an inverter. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 4. The duration of lighting, the bulb for number of footsteps and sorresponding energy stored, are given in Table 1 hhe main objective of developing the KSEC was to demonstrate the technology of harnessingTable 1: Energy Storage by Foot Stepsenergy from human walk. However, multiple unit clusters may be more useful for producing useable power. A single cluster with 5 FSEC devices was, developed for experimental purpose. = PSEC unit plath luster of 5 FSEC devices mounted on a Wheeled platform was | PEveloped! A view of the internal components of a typical FSEC device jp Mised in the cluster is shown in Fig. 5. The electrical output of all five ESEC devices is stored in 2 batteries provided in the platform. An electronic digital energy meter is fitted on the platform. The energy fenérated in each of the five FSEC units fitted in the mobile platform is integrated and displayed on the energy meter. The energy meter shows 4 total integrated value of electrical energy in KJ getierated in all FSECs | fitted ig the platform. Fig. 4: Storing Device for Foot Step Electric Energy (a) Bulb on (after charging battery) (b) Bulb off (before charging battery) The platform is shown in Fig. 6. The platform is provided castor wheels, and can be placed at any public place where there is continuous movement of people. This unit is designed for persons weighing 50 Kg and above. However, persons below 50 kg weight can also operate but the power produced will be low. The unit is fitted with two 12 V, 26 AH Tead acid batteries for storing the output energy from this unit. Also, aninverter is provided to convert 12 V DC from battery to 230 V AC supply for general use When a person walks over to the platform, the reading on the energy meter was observed to be incremented by 3-5 J per step. depending on + the weight of the person. The output may be further increased by increasing the efficiency of the FSEC device. As millions of people are on the move in cities, significant amount of electricity can be generated by installing these devices at places where public walk through. 'e The economic viability aspects of these units will be studied, after sufficient data is collected. There is a plan to put the platform for public use, for testing and collecting data. a CH MAHESH 3/4 EEE-A LITARE529 Mule. DESIGN/REDESIGN OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION Ihe Power Analysis must be always be at the top of your tasks im Gesign of your electrical installation. It will enable the source to be Sizetl according to the purpose of the installation, the intended use of. the citeuits and the receivers to be supplied. Bflsed on this knowledge of the power consumed the chosen Service requirements and the Chosen source, the following can be carried out: = Determination of the conditions for protection of people = Calculation of the conductor cross sections + Protection for each level in installation += Selection of the appropriate electrical devices and equipments Power analysis and calculation should be done from’ ‘downstream to upstream as well as from upstream to downstream, ANALYSIS OF THE LOADS: The Joads supplied by the of the electrical installation can be of various types depending on the business motive power, variable control units, lighting, IT — heating ete Depending on the individual case, the electrical operating parameters phase shift, efficiency,Inrush transients, harmonics ete will be different. The power to be considered is not limited to the simple reading ofa value in watts. An observation that will be a lead fo the compensating for these unnecessary and non recurrable losses, which are also costly, using compensation measures such as capacitors or filters. Ail electrical receivers will consume a-total or apparent power © Kexpressed in volt-amperes or VA) equal to the product of UXI-The Same unit is used to express the power that the generator on ‘transformer must be able to supply. But as its name indicates, the power is only apparent and pis now not necessarily used in an optimum way. This wasted energy is generally killed by the.eleotricify Supplier and it causes additional currents to flow whichimust be taken in{o account in the sizing of installation. Non-linear loads (those which consume @ non-sinusoidal Gurfent which is not a reflection of the voltage) require the introduction of an additional concept of loss called the distorting power p, which will in addition to the unnecessary power ¢onsumed, introduce real pollution of the mains supply. ACTUAL POWER DIAGRAM In an electrical circuit consisting of several receivers through which the sinusoidal currentspass. THE TOTAL ACTIVE POWER P (W) Consumed is equal to the arithmetical sum of the active power" consumed by each device. ‘THE TOTAL REACTIVE POWER Q (VAR) Consumed is equal to the algebraic sum of the reactive power consumed by each device ‘THE APPARENT POWER Must newer be added algebraically. The total apparent power is calculated based on quadratic sum of P and Q and optionally as SPH QD? COSINE Li OR DISPLACEMEN! FACTOR Until recently, loads were more or less liner ie the current consumed was sinusoidal and reflected the voltage applied, even if they were out of phase. The cos characteristics a time shifty Of the sinusoidal signals’ (Characterised by an angular displacement in the vector diagram) HWiiereas the power factor is the ratio of the active power and apparent power values Tithe loads are not sinusoidal, Whioh is almost always the case in moderh installations, the cosine!) must not be confused with the la powerfactor. Tie phase shift between P & S can be different from that between U & I due to the intrBdUetionTOr distorting loads. ‘We will therefore keep to the use of the power factor or L=P/Q here. ‘The tan{] will be used for the calculation of the reactive compensation power. The active power P and reactive power Qi are. added together the sum S of the apparent power is SVP, +P +Q + Q). In electrical networks, the voltage and current wave forms are not purely sinusoidal. The direction jis duc to the presence of loads with non-linear characteristics. ‘These loads consume non-sinusoidal currents thus causing a distortion of the current wave. CURRENT HARMONICS AND VOLTAGE HARMONICS There are two types of harmonic wave: the current wave and the voltage wave, Al the origin, devices with non-linear circuits distant the fundamental current and generate harmonic currents. On the other hand, it is the measure of the total harmonic distortion of the current wave that is used to detect the sources that are the origins of this pollution. ‘The distorted wave is represented mathematically by the “fundamental wave” at a frequency of SOHz, on which a certai limber of sinusoidal waves are superimposed, each with a frequency that is'@ multiple of that of the fundamental wave. These waves are called harmonic waves. They are identified by their order (integer) BYhich is the ratio between their frequency and the fundamental frequency BY’ SUBHRA TRIPATHY 9/4 EEE-C Y1GAEEA9S TM AN ENGINEER.....
