Scouts send 393 packages to soldiers
Cornhusker Council plans another ‘Save Our Soldiers’ event for early 2011
On Nov. 6, the Cornhusker Council’s 11th annual Support Our Soldiers campaign collected $4,000 in cash donations to send 393 care packages to military units. Boy Scouts collected food donations at five Lincoln HyVee locations and through collection efforts by units in Hickman, Syracuse and Wilbur. The Nebraska Community Blood Bank also contributed dozens of boxes of care package items for the SOS campaign. The cash donations paid for shipping of the care packages. On Nov. 8, 340 of the care packages were shipped to military units. Delivery of the remaining units is being coordinated. A total of 14 different U.S. military units from Nebraska and Iowa, and the U.S. Wounded Warrior Medical Center in Germany are recipients of the packages. In addition, eight military families and veterans were “adopted” for service projects by scout units through the SOS drive. The Cornhusker Council’s SOS program is one of the longest sustained efforts by a youth organization providing support to members of the military. The council is planning a small SOS event after the first of the year. For more information, watch the council website, www.cornhuskercouncil.org.
