SASTRA University is organizing the Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Elocution Contest 2016-17 for Law
students on the 18th of March, 2017. The details of the contest are given below. We request you to
depute one student from your esteemed institution to participate in the contest and e-mail the
nomination form attached below to the e-mail id hod_law@sastra.edu marking a copy to
madhavan@sastra.edu. The last date for the receipt of the nomination form is the 9th of March, 2017.

NANI A. PALKHIVALA MEMORIAL ELOCUTION
CONTEST FOR LAW STUDENTS (2016-17)

(Arranged under the auspices of Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Trust, Mumbai)

Object, rules, subjects, prizes

1. The object is to encourage law students to cultivate the art of public speaking.

2. The Contest is open to students of law colleges located in and around Thanjavur. The Contest is
being conducted by the SASTRA University, on behalf of Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Trust,
Mumbai.

3. The Contest is scheduled to be conducted on the 18th of March, 2017 at 11.00 AM in Chankhya
Vihar, SASTRA University.

4. The participants are free to choose and speak on any one of the following subjects for five
minutes in English at the Contest:

A. Need for a Uniform Civil Code;

B. Collegium System v/s NJAC – Transparency in Judiciary v/s Independence


of Judiciary;

C. Can the Internet Speed up Legal Proceedings?

5. Before commencing, each participant will announce his/ her subject. The participants will not
read from a written text, but can refer to notes for quoting statistics or case laws, if any. A
warning bell will be given at the end of the fourth minute, followed by another at the end of the
fifth minute.

6. A panel of judges, appointed by the SASTRA University, will evaluate the performance of the
participants and select the three best speakers who will then be awarded prizes. First Prize:
Rs.5000/-. Second Prize: Rs.3000/-. Third Prize: Rs.2000/-. The panel’s decision will be final and
binding.

7. Clarifications, if any, may be sought from the Head of the Department, School of Law, SASTRA
University, Thanjavur.
