Characteristics of a Good English Teacher

Teachers are an important and valuable asset in education, and being a good teacher is the

most important thing because they can produce good people who can build a nation that is a

developed, victorious and dignified nation. Becoming a good teacher is not easy to undergo, it

takes skills that can support and direct students towards a better future. A good English teacher

will be a model for the students, therefore a good English teacher must be able to teach, guide and

behave well. There are three main characteristics of a Good English teacher, that are deep

knowledge about the subject, discipline, and class mastery.

The most important thing in being a good English teacher is master the subject. Because

the teacher's job is to teach, guide, and educate students, the teacher must master the lesson to be

taught in order to make students understand the lesson too. If a teacher lacks knowledge about the

subject, the activity in teaching and learning will difficult. A good teacher is a person who love

and hard think about the subject. When teaching and learning activity is beginning, the teacher not

only explain about the subject but also can expand the discussion time or question and answer time

with the student by using example, relevant facts and so on to make sure that the students

understand well about the subject. So, every good teacher especially English teacher should have

deep knowledge and master the subject.

Discipline is the most severe problem faced by teachers. The success or failure of a teacher

in teaching much depends on how the teacher creates discipline for his students. A teacher is a

guide for the students, so that every teacher should have a good character like discipline. Discipline

is the important thing in school or other place. A good teacher should be discipline in everything

that she does. For example, come to the class on time. A good teacher should come to the class on

time it shows that the teacher has a discipline soul then the students will see it and will follow it.
Not only that but also the other activities such as should be discipline too. Understanding student

discipline is the duty of a teacher. To instil this student discipline must start from within ourselves,

then we can discipline others. So that peace will be created, peace and harmony.

Managing classes is the teacher's skill to create optimal learning conditions and restore

disrupted learning conditions. Optimal learning conditions can be achieved if the teacher is able to

direct students to a pleasant and not boring learning atmosphere. The purpose of class management

is that each student in the class can follow the learning in an orderly and disciplined manner so

that the learning objectives can be achieved properly. Class management aims to anticipate chaotic

or chaotic classroom conditions. Clutter in the classroom can interfere with the teaching and

learning process, usually it happens because of small things. If the chaos that is considered small

turns into a big mess, then the teacher will find it difficult to return it to normal. Therefore, a good

teacher must be able to condition the class well.
