A Controversy of “Dua Garis Biru”

A drama movie “Dua Garis Biru” directed by Ginatri S. Noer which will

be aired on 11th July has become an issue which erouses enormous controversy

among parents and oldsters. It is true that this movie brings a taboo concept and

could bring adverse effects. However, as far as I am concerned, I believe we could

get much more positive impacts from this movie than the negatives, and I am

strongly agree that this kind of movie should be allowed to be aired in all theaters

in Indonesia as one of the means of sex education, for the sake of teenager's

future, and parents' mindset.

Our country has long been wrong in providing sex education for teenagers.

They are only told about virginity and the sin of sex before marriage, but our

teachers and parents never really teach us the dangers of it to our mental and

physical, and what will happen if we do that. Dua Garis Biru will not tell us only

about the euphoria of teenage love. It tells us about how difficult it is to be a

parent at a young age, and how Dara and Bima are faced with various problems

after what they have done.

I live in an environment with middle to lower social status where there are

two of my neighbors who married at a young age because they were pregnant

before marriage, one of my elementary school friends who now has a 4-year-old

child, and also my male friend who has a 5-year-old child who even has become a

widower. I do know how their situation, yet I can not really blame them in this

situation. I just want to blame their less knowledge of this matter that cause them

doing an immoral thing without thinking twice. And the rest, I want to blame once

again the parents and teachers for not teaching what they should really know.

According to the Indonesian Health Demographic Survey in 2017, the number of

teen pregnancy continues to increase about 500 pregnancies every year. That is

what really happen in our country. For the sake of teenagers' future, I do not

want this to continue. That is why I agree that this movie needs to be aired in all

the theaters in Indonesia. Our country needs this kind of educational movie to

open the parents' eyes that this issue is near them, near their children's life.

Sex education is an education that explains clearly and correctly

everything about human sexuality, the process of pregnancy to birth, sexual

behavior, as well as sex and its explanations in terms of health. But until now, the

public's view of sex education is still fairly narrow. Public, especially parents,

should know that sex education is not a porn. In order not to cause

misunderstanding among teenagers who watch this film and to open the parents'

eyes, it would be better if the teenagers were accompanied by parents. This is the

role of parents; to correct the wrong, and to educate, not only forbid by the threat

of sin.

In conclusion, sex education is not a porn. It exists to educate people, not

to plunge people into something bad. Dua Garis Biru clearly is a sex education

movie with a taboo yet positive content that teenagers and parents should watch

together. There is no reason to boycott this movie because this movie is good, the

one who is bad is our mindset.
