Artists selected for this program are at all stages of their careers and work in all media,
including drawing, painting, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non
fiction writing, interdisciplinary, social practice and architecture.

Founded in 2007, JTHAR is a nonprofit artist residency that fosters creativity through
opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural
exchange with the vibrant local artist community. We establish spaces where inspiration
happens on a daily basis, so artists can do the work of innovating, changing the cultural
landscape and generating a fresh look at the way we connect to each other and to the world.
Each year we invite 4-6 artists from around the world to create work amidst the beauty of
Joshua Tree National Park.

Submission Period: August 1, 2019 – January 10, 2020

Apply for the residency at www.callforentry.org (Entry Fee $40.00)

Selection Process: Artists are selected to attend the residency by the JTHAR Board
Members. The committee reviews all applications submitted to the program. Selection is
based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and the residency proposal. Visual artists must
submit a minimum of five images. Writers should submit a maximum of 20 pages. All artists
are expected to submit a project proposal for the seven week spring session or the solo artist
six week residencies.

Scholarship Information: All 2020 Spring Session recipients will receive a one thousand
dollar scholarship/stipend to deter costs of participating in the program. Funds can be used
towards art supplies, transportation, meals, etc. The six week solo artist residencies do not
have scholarship awards.
Studios and Accommodations: The residency provides studio space and living
accommodations. Each artist will be assigned their own house in which to live and work for
the length of the residency. Artists may choose to work in the JTHAR dedicated studio, a
large studio space, divided by movable walls, depending on the artist's needs. Some
assigned houses are located near the West Entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park.
Others are in Pipes Canyon and Flamingo Heights. Please refer to our website for examples
of housing - JTHAR.COM * Please note that the summer months can be very hot in the high
desert. If you are adverse to the heat, this may not be the program for you. All houses are
equipped with AC or swamp coolers.

Residency Terms and Expectations:

Artists must provide transportation to and from the program. A vehicle is needed during
the residency stay. Artists chosen for the Spring residency must be able to attend for the
full seven week program - April 28 - June 16. No exceptions.
Artists are welcome to have visitors during the residency. Visitors are limited to a two night
stay. We cannot accommodate family members, partners or pets. Artists must notify
hosts of planned visitors.

Artists chosen for the residency will be required to donate one completed work to the
JTHAR program.

Workshops: Artists may conduct an optional workshop about their work to the local
community. Mid-

Residency Review - Artists will share their work-in-progress with the board members
during a mid-residency review. Reviews are helpful opportunities to discuss progress or
issues with completing projects.

The April 28 - June 16 residency will culminate in an exhibition at the Joshua Tree Art
Gallery. Artists will curate the exhibition with their completed works. The six week solo
artists may have the option of an exhibition of their work at the JTHAR studio.
