Materials:

Motivation (building background):
● Instructor will connect the primary source and the unit to the lives of the students. This
will be done by connecting the revolutions in South and Central America to the US
Revolution, as well as other revolutions in the area depending on the demographics of
students. Instructor will identify basic fundamental principles of democracy like
freedom, liberty, equality, and others that our society is founded on. Instructor will also
illustrate the importance of the vocabulary words in understanding the primary source, to
see how these revolutionary principles were evident in other parts of the world hundreds
of years ago.
Presentation (language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interactions,
feedback):
● Instructor will first explain the goal of the lesson, what will be done, and how it will be
accomplished.
● Instructor will use clear and concise language, with rather slow and drawn out language
with explicit facial motions of speech. Instructor will also use hand motions and possible
props to facilitate understanding. ELL Students in this classroom have good working use
and knowledge of the English language and are between Stage IV and Stage V of
Language Acquisition.
● Instructor will use multiple activities so that learners of all modalities can be able to learn
and understand the concepts.
● Strategies include the direct instruction/ interactive lecture to introduce the unit, direct
instruction/ interactive lecture to introduce the vocabulary, then students will complete a
vocab clusters worksheet. Upon completion of the worksheet, students will move into
learning stations in groups of 3-4 students per group.
Practice and Application (meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application,
feedback):
● Students will first practice the vocabulary and related concepts in a group activity using
dice. Students will interact in groups and practice speech. Instructors will work one on
one with groups to assess learning of concepts including the meaning of the word, the
context of the word, uses of the word, and pronunciation of the word.
Review and Assessment (Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning):
● Formative assessment of students’ learning will be determined using classwork, group
work, and interaction with other students and the instructor throughout the lesson.
Extension:
● Review/Extension- instructor will reiterate the meaning of the lesson and why learning
the vocabulary is important. Instructor will explain the intent of the lesson for the
following class period on reading primary sources like a historian.
