CHAPTER 1:
DEFINING THE SELF: PERSONAL
AND DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVES
ON SELF AND IDENTITY

Lesson 4: The Self in Western and Eastern Thoughts.

WESTERN THOUGHTS
The western view of the 'enduring self' refers to the notion that “you are the same
person you were earlier in your life

EASTERN THOUGHTS
The self is often treated as an illusion the idea that people separate entities from
each other and the world is not considered a reality.

CONFUCIANISM

 In the process of self‐development, the key is to relating to one's social commitment,

rather than isolating oneself from others and society. The Western atomistic perception of
the self never comes to the mind of Confucians and the self is never understood as an
independent being distinct from all others.
SELF- CULTIVATION

 Is seen as the ultimate purpose of life but the characteristics of a chun-tzu, a man of virtue
or noble character is still embedded In his social relationship. The cultivated self in
Confucianism is what some scholars call a “subdued self” wherein personal needs are
repressed for the good of many.
TAOISM

 Is living in the way of the Tao or the universe. However, Taoism rejects having one
definition of what the Tao is and one can only state clues of what it is as they adopt a
free-flowing, relative, unitary as well as paradoxical view of almost everything.
BUDDHISM

 This is the third belief. There are various groups who have adopted Buddhism; thus, you
may find differences in their teachings with our discussion but more likely, their core
concepts remained the same.
Filipino Self
Filipinos have been described as friendly, outgoing, sensitive, easily offended, nosy,
garrulous, direct, hospitable, feisty, irreverent, good natured, clever, witty, gregarious, happy, generous,
easy to laugh, gracious, easy to befriend, casual, fun loving, sensitive and hospitable. Personal and family
honor are stressed, as well as dignity and pride. Education is highly valued and families make great
sacrifices to educate their children. Hiya (shame) is instilled in Filipinos at an early age. To be shamed is
the greatest form of disgrace. Filipino culture developed over centuries in tandem with and in response
to Western culture introduced by the Spanish and later Americans.

 SELF
- versions of “culturally understood Self
- provide meanings to one’s and another’s actions within forms of social interaction
- expression of oneself
- we communicate using representations for the self
- we present different sides depending on the situation; which is more appropriate
 CULTURE
- Cultural traditions affect or influence how we perceive ourselves. In turn; We are
considered as agents of culture; Culture has become an integral part of the self
- We are social beings, We continue to be affected by our interactions with other people
- The “self” is being “constructed” in terms of meanings created among members of a
group
- We are constantly being affected or influenced by the people around us The SELF is
being “honed” by the many interactions we experience everyday

country that we belong with patronize and despite of differences, acceptance and respect
is what truly matters.

GROUP 1:
GROUP 2:
GROUP 3: The country is marked by a true blend of cultures; truly in the Philippines,
East meets West. The background of the people is Indonesian and Malay. There are
Chinese and Spanish elements as well. The history of American rule and contact with
merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of East and West, both in the
appearance and culture of the Filipinos, or people of the Philippines. Hospitality, a trait
displayed by every Filipino, makes these people legendary in Southeast Asia.

GROUP 5:

GROUP 1:
GROUP 2:
GROUP 3: The Filipino character is actually a little bit of all the cultures put together.
The bayanihan or spirit of kinship and camaraderie that Filipinos are famous for is said to
be taken from Malay forefathers. The close family relations are said to have been
inherited from the Chinese. The piousness comes from the Spaniards who introduced
Christianity in the 16th century. Hospitality is a common denominator in the Filipino
character and this is what distinguishes the Filipino. Filipinos are probably one of the
few, if not the only, English-proficient Oriental people today. Pilipino is the official
national language, with English considered as the country's unofficial one.
GROUP 4: One factor that makes the Philippines similar or different is the attribute that
Filipinos possess example is our hospitality that makes us unique. Filipinos tend to go with
the trends in other Westernized or Eastern country.

GROUP 5:
4) Is there also a difference between regions or ethno linguistic groups in the Philippines?
GROUP 1:
GROUP 2:
GROUP 3: Yes, the Philippines consist of numerous upland and lowland ethno linguistic
groups living in the country. The highland ethnic nations have co-existed with the
lowland Austronesian ethnic groups for thousands of years in the Philippine archipelago.
The primary difference is that they were not absorbed by centuries of Spanish and United
States colonization of the Philippines, and in the process have retained their customs and
traditions. This is mainly due to the rugged inaccessibility of the mountains, which
discouraged Spanish and American colonizers from coming into contact with the
highlanders. The indigenous peoples of northern Philippines are collectively called
as Igorot, while the non-Muslim indigenous groups of mainland Mindanao are
collectively called as Lumad. Numerous indigenous groups also live outside these two
indigenous corridors
GROUP 4: Philippines is divided into different regions and in each regions on some other

GROUP 1: These things help us in our daily living and always used in our life and all of this
things tell about whom you are and what you are.
GROUP 2: We need all this things to prepare for our future.
GROUP 3: As we do the debit card challenge it simply shows we, being materialistic because
we wrote down all our wants like house and lot, cars, business for our parents, etc. But on the
other hand, those things that we’ve listed are also our needs. Sometimes in life, it isn’t bad to
make our self be happy, or to buy the things that we want. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that
we are luxurious in all ways, it’s just that, we dream to have something that we never had before.
In fact, we all want to experience to live in a comfortable house, to make investments for our
parents even our future and to live a better life and we think there is nothing wrong with that.
GROUP 4: Doing that Debit Card Challenge, we realized that there are many things that is not
really needed, but we included that because we want that things. And we realized that we should
prioritize the things we really needed in our life.

GROUP 5:

3) REFLECTION
GROUP 1: All the things that we list above is very important to us specially in our daily
life.We need all of this specially the house, food and clothes. But some of our list above is all
about our personal used like phone, motor, shoes and many more,we know that this kind of things
is not totally important but we want this not to impress to other people but to experience new to
our life. And we want to express more about our self through the help of all things that we list.
But at the end, this things are being useless to us,because we find our true self without any
help of this things.
GROUP 2:
GROUP 3: It is human nature for people to desire material possessions. Our material yearnings
are an attempt to satisfy are need to special and wanted. In a world where most of society defines
"socially acceptable" as the material possessions one owns such as, the latest clothing, the
biggest house, or the fastest car one comes to believe that you need all of these things to be
viewed as a part of society. For many, work has taken over community life and has had a major
effect on happiness.
GROUP 4: In our life there are many things that we want, like we want to buy many things that
is trend and sometimes we forgot what is important and we should prioritized what we need in
our daily life. And also give importance to the things that we have.
GROUP 5: Our reflection regarding the material self is that is an important aspect of self that
become a part of our daily lives. These are things that we designated as ours that we treasured.
The things that we considered useful and valuable and the things that we are the most likely
attached and deeply affected. That without those things life is not complete because they have an
intimate part of our lives that made and create who we are and what we are. Additionally, these
things help people to defined who they are.

RESEARCH PAPER:
GROUP 1: Consumer attitude can be influenced by many factors outside the product
attributes. Social and cultural environment as well as demographic, psychographic and
geographic conditions can sometimes shape consumer behaviour. Consumer attitude, if possible
is an advantage to a maker.

GROUP 2:
GROUP 3: Filipinos are fun-loving individuals who have a passion for festivals and an
obsession with singing and dancing. Filipino culture is very family-oriented, and has made
people have relaxed attitudes. Although they may not enjoy the extent of material wealth that
many western countries have, in many ways they are richer through their tightly knit social and
family structures.

GROUP 4: ROLE OF FILIPINO CONSUMER

CULTURE TO FILIPINO SELF AND IDENTITY

The consumer’s role in society is to keep the trade alive and well. When people buy and
sell goods, people get what they want and need while boosting the economy of the country. This
behavior can play an important role in promoting our identity as a people by consuming locally
made products instead of purchasing imported ones. This will strengthen our economy by
helping out Filipino owned businesses which will then hire more employees and put more people
to work. It isn’t wrong to buy imported products, we all know that many of them are better than
ours, that is something we have to accept, but when it comes to certain items which we know are
about the same quality as that of the imports, we could probably patronize ours and save a bit
of money while doing it.
With the change brought by innovation and economic progress to the world, people around
the globe have shifted their spending behaviors from functional to materialistic and aesthetic
purposes. Driven by this behavior, vanity became an area of study for numerous researchers,
made popular as a predictor of a person’s materialism (Chang et al., 2011). Choosing vanity
goods over spending for functionalism can be seen as problematic given the economic status of
the majority of Filipinos. The lack of information about the consumer behavior of Filipinos,
specifically about the matters of vanity and materialism, influenced the realization of the paper.
200 Filipino individuals were surveyed for this study which was mainly intended to find answers
to following the hypotheses: 1) Consumer vanity is positively related to anxiety. 2) Consumer
vanity and materialism are positively related. 3) Anxiety is positively related to materialism, 4)
the relationship between consumer vanity and materialism is mediated by anxiety, and 5) there is
no difference in consumer vanity and materialism between Filipino males and females.
Substantially, the results were found to be coherent with the hypotheses, showing evidence of a
significant relationship of vanity and anxiety with materialism independently, and showing no
significant differences among the genders with regards to materialism and vanity. However, the
data failed to show evidence that supports anxiety as a media or between vanity and materialism.
Consumer behavior has affected Filipinos' self identity. Consumer behavior refers the study on
how people mentally, physically or emotionally react or respond on different products and
services. Self-identity refers to the overall perception of oneself in relation to the society
someone belongs to. The Filipino people's buying behavior has become highly dependent
on vanity and materialism nowadays. This means that more people would more likely buy
products as long as these have higher aesthetic value and "better" than what others are using. An
example of this phenomenon is investing more on top-rated yet very expensive gadgets as
opposed choosing more functional ones. People buy products based on the physical aspects and
not by the content. Another example of this is parents opting to buy formula milk brand A
because it is simply much more expensive than brand B when in fact the nutritional value of both
is just the same. These characteristics of Filipino consumers lead to higher spending on
disposable income and not being able to save money anymore. Expensive products like cars and
gadgets also need higher maintenance which means consumers end up spending even more than
what they originally planned.
GROUP 5: Kantar World panel Survey: Filipino consumer . Recently revealed a 3% growth in
the total FMCG. Meanwhile, the Philippine FMCG market, ranked second in Southeast Asia.
In the local front, the kantar world panel consumer insights study revealed that the FMCG value
spend nearly all categories has shown steady growth.

Modern spirituality sits at a unique – rare, even – point in
history. The current spiritual scene in the modern world is
providing us with opportunities for both great
promise…and great peril. “Crisis” might be too strong of a
word. But both "danger" and "opportunity” seem
appropriate. Not to be too dramatic, but we could be on
the verge of a new spiritual Renaissance, if we do it right.
Or, we could flub it up if we don't.

GROUP 1: This picture remind us for being a Filipino because we all know that Filipino people
is known in being persevering people and not immediately surrender in the trials of life. And
because although many challenges comes to our life, we can still smile and laugh
GROUP 2: From the photos that we gathered, most of the traditions/doings there are no longer
being applied in the present. But looking back, it makes us happy as a kids who used to do/see
those things. That made us Filipinos unique in very nationality the world.
GROUP 3: This picture remind us of who Filipino are. You will always see the genuine smile of
Filipino’s, how respectful they are, how they warm-heartedly accept people from other
regions/countries, and how they help each and every one.
GROUP 4: The picture reminds us that Filipino are really good at everything, the picture show
the true Filipino, who are always ready to give help to others, without return.
GROUP 5: Filipino are known for being hospitable and very happy people. In times of trouble
we can put smile on our faces.
2) Are you proud of being a Filipino? Why and why not?
GROUP 1: We are proud to be a Filipino because of our wonderful culture, colourful heritage
and our optimistic attitude towards life that, despite the calamities were facing right now, we
Filipinos still get to put a smile on our faces.
GROUP 2: When it comes to culture, the destinations and the people. It makes us proud being a
Filipino. Because we all know we Filipinos bring the best wherever we are or whatever we are
doing. But in our opinions what makes us not proud for being a Filipino is the poor Justice
system that we have in our country, the corruption or the Politics itself.
GROUP 3: Yes, We are proud of it because Filipino's are respectful and hospitable
GROUP 4: Yes, we are proud to be a Filipino, because a Filipino knows how to greet elders,
Filipino knows how to give importance to their family and also know how to value the things
that they have.
GROUP 5: Yes! Because Filipino have a unity in the poor and prosperity.
3) Imagine that you were of a different nationality. What would change in you aside
from your citizenship and origin?
GROUP 1: We think the culture and beliefs I would have set unto myself and my family. I
would have been raised differently and mighty have believed something or otherwise if I were to
have a different nationality. And it was one of the factors what build me as an individual in the
real world. Our nationality holds something to us and affected our nature when we grow up. It
has always been a part of us and changing it means changing ourselves not just the labels but part
of our lives.
GROUP 2: If we were given a chance, I think that would be the attitude. We don’t want others
to correct us, we cannot obey a simple escalator etiquette. Filipinos are too smart that we end up
looking stupid.
GROUP 3: If I'm not a Filipino and I have different nationality. The thing that will change in
me beside from my citizenship and origin is my moral and behaviour because Filipino citizens
are well mannered and we all know that Filipinos are hospitable and their love for their family is
priceless unlike in some other countries. Having different nationalities means the nature of
morals and behaviour are not the same as the Filipinos, I can say that the respect and the moral of
our fellow man has no equal and better than the others.
GROUP 4: The culture that we used to be, because there are possibilities that were going to
adopt the culture that we saw to others, it can influence us to also follow that culture, and we can
also love that certain cultures.
GROUP 5: Nowadays, they have many people that addicted to idolized the Korean artist and
eagerness to come in korea on the other hand, even if they are addicted in k-pop they didn’t
forget the culture of Filipino.
4) How extensive are the effects of being Filipino in your selfhood?
GROUP 1: I have little to no desire to go abroad and would rather see the different islands
within our country. I enjoy the food and everything else I see around me. As to the extent of
being a Filipino with regards to my selfhood, let's just say, I am completely consumed by it. It
will be one of my greatest joy to be able to see the entire country someday.
GROUP 2: First, being Filipino is a bit not the same as being Tagalog. Being a Filipino in my
opinion is belonging to a political domain, a nationality if you like to put it that way. On the
other hand being Tagalog is belonging to an ethnic group which embodies our culture as a
people. You see there are a lot of other ethnic groups in the Philippines, and each ethnic group
has its own distinct trait. To summarily put everyone in the Philippines under the label Filipino is
an injustice to all these diverse ethnic groups.
GROUP 3: Being a Filipino is running to our blood, you can see it through the actions and
behaviour which affects our daily lives as we interact to others.
GROUP 4: Since we are born in this world, we can’t deny that we are born as Filipino. Being a
Filipino we used to do all the things that Filipino do, we adopt the way a Filipino talk, the
language of a Filipino and also the values, beliefs and the cultures that our family show to us.
GROUP 5: I have little no to desire to go abroad and would rather see the different islands
within our country. I enjoy the food and everything else I see around e. as to the extent of being a
Filipino with regards to my selfhood, let’s just say, I am completely consumed by it. It will be
one of my greatest joy to able to see the entire country someday.

The cheerful personality of a Filipino that always smiling and laughing even they have many
problems and also the way we respect the elders the ways we used “MANO PO” and also the
“PO and OPO”
For us, it is the language, birthplace and ethnicity , because its show that we are Filipino, on how
the way we speak and also the place that we used to be.
When they asked about who are Filipino we can easily say that they are Lea Salonga,
Manny Pacquiao and other Filipino pride. But who are Filipino? We are all Filipino by heart, we
are born and grew up in the culture that our family show to us they passed the value of being a
Filipino to us.

2) . Discuss how being a Filipino affects your “self”. How can becoming a better
Filipino influence your duty to becoming a better version of yourself?
GROUP 1:
GROUP 2: Being a Filipino is always making me proud. By blood or by heart. Most of us
Filipinos are sometimes in a liberated way but we can’t deny the fact that this helps us to become
a better person, to think in a very positive way in every negative that we have encountered a long
the way. More on open minded and very understanding in every situation. That is what a Filipino
for me nowadays.
GROUP 3: Filipinos have a strong sense of family and community They are very gregarious
and like to talk and hang out with family and friends. Education is highly valued and families
make great sacrifices to educate their children. Filipinos are sensitive to attacks on their own
self-esteem and cultivate a sensitivity to the self-esteem of others as well. Anything that might
hurt another's self-esteem is to be avoided or else one risks terminating the relationship. Galang
or respect is part of most social encounters. It indicates deference to the opinions of elders, peers,
or those in authority, during important deliberations. Any verbal clash with older people in
public, or any sign of extreme familiarity with members of higher official status in public
meetings, are signs of disrespect. With all of this traits of being a Filipino, it makes individuals to
be a better version of themselves.
GROUP 4: Being a Filipino we have a tight relationship with our families, we are cheerful and
we speak on our Filipino language. But sometimes, we forget how to give importance to our
language, most of the times we are tend to other language. To become a better Filipino we
should aware to our country/community and also we should support our own products to help
our economy.
GROUP 5: Being Filipino affects me as a active in what we want to prove. Filipino is known as
a friendlier, since Filipino is known for that we adapt it our self. So that despite of being shyness
we changes to being a friendly, talkative, etc. just because we see it to plurality that it’s ok to
being friendly.
