A hazard
-refers to the potential to cause injury or illness
A risk
-refers to the probability that the hazard will cause injury or illness

Eg: “Slippery floor” is a hazard


“Fall” is the risk

Common hazards in the health care industry:


• Sharps ,Radiation,
• Infectious Diseases,
• Confused clients,

• Water leakage in clinical area, Poisons,

A duty of care is a legal obligation
“which is imposed on an individual requiring adherence
to a standard of reasonable care while performing any
acts that could foreseeably harm others”

Waste generated -should be segregated, stored and transported
appropriately to control infection.
Health industry waste includes:-
• General waste.
• Infectious waste.
• Cytotoxic waste.
• Radioactive waste.

Storage and transport of waste
Containers -should be securely closed and clearly labeled. (eg
infectious, cytotoxic).

The trolleys should be:


• fitted with drip trays to contain leaks or spills
• never overfilled ( only 2/3rd fill)
• cleaned daily

Incidence Information/reporting
“an incident report is a form that is filled out in order to record details
of an unusual event that occurs at the facility”, eg: injury to a patient
When completing an incident form, the following information to assist
with follow up:
• date and time of exposure
• how the incident occurred
• name of the source person (if known).
• site of injury.
