Part 1: Librarian Interview

My interview with Destiny Discover (Follett) she work Marvin M Sedway Middle

school. She is used for administrative use as well as for student use for the Library online

catalog. Some of the technology that she helps the schools is Infinite Campus is used for grading

purposes and to check for AUPs on file. CCSD Library Services provide online research

resources: ABC-CLIO, Culture/Grams, EBSCO, Teaching Books, and World Book Online.

For the library Destiny Destiny one search feature is used where Students can find books,

databases and websites. I have used Google Classroom; the students respond well to it. This

gives the students an opportunity to get familiar with technology and get use to using it in the

real world for whatever job they go into and in college when completing assignments they know

what to do. As with most software, the only way to learn to use it is by exploring it. She has

taken some PD classes for Google, Destiny Discover, and CCSD databases to help her stay on

top with technology to better assist the children.

Destiny also said that up to 50% of the time for a classroom library visit is spent on

teaching or using software products. Because teachers are incorporating more technology use

when doing homework assignments and everything so the kids need know how to use those

programs in order to successfully complete assignments. Some teachers use chrome books in the

classroom for PowerPoints, research papers and essays.

Ms. Follett gave her opinion on education being incorporated in schools. I feel very

fortunate that my school is keeping up with technology. I do not have enough information or

experience in other schools to determine what kind of gap there is. I do know that some of the

schools are very old; therefore, I would guess that access to technology would need to be

updated. I do not feel that technology interferes with teaching and learning in the classroom.

In fact, technology should be used to enhance learning. Information is available now

24/7. Therefore, if a student wants to know more about a topic, he/she can find

answers instantly.

Some of the suggestions she gave to improve technology in the classroom is to provide

more opportunities for teachers to explore sites/apps that are appropriate for their subject

areas. Equipment should be available in every classroom. As the times are changing teachers

need to up on the new technology because how it is the year, something new will be out next

year that runs better than the last program.

The interview went really well I like the use of the technology that the teachers use in the

classroom with the children to help them get familiar with different applications when writing a

paper and looking up information. I love that they make the time to teach them different

technology which is important because technology is always changing and evolving.

Part 2: Administration Interview

My second interview was with Robert Schauer (Assistant Principal) that works for

Legacy High School. He does a lot work with legacy day in and out from paperwork, handling

students and any important details that come to the school. I asked him a few questions regarding

technology in the school and he gave me some good answers.

He gave some insight on the technology plan when it comes to their school, I believe that

the district has somewhat of a plan in the sense that there are teacher computers, student labs,

projectors, TV’s, etc. that are installed and replaced on regular intervals by the district usually

every 10 – 12 years. At the school site with the new autonomy that the site administration has,

the principal with committee make decisions of what technology is needed and how it will be

implemented. At the high school level, there is usually a Technology Committee that meets

every month or semester to discuss the needs of the school. Budget issues must be considered

before decisions are made.

If a teacher wants something new in their classroom, they usually go to the department

chair to first see if the money is available through the department to fund the request. Larger

purchases are requested through the admin/supervisor then presented to the Technology

committee. Every big budget purchase then goes to the SOT (School Organizational Team) for

final approval. The ECS (computer specialist) will then prioritize the requests and handle them
as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hrs. For more urgent matters, the ECS is called directly

(radio or phone) and it is handled immediately. The ECS is easily the most called for person on

the radio.

The teachers do have the opportunity to learn more technology that can help them in the

classroom when teaching the children new application. The district offers technology based

professional development all the time through RPDP and CPD. The teachers and staff sign up

through Pathlore that they can access online classes for the technology courses. They also have a

technology committee usually looks at the requests of teachers and staff then looks at what we

have and what we have available to us. They prioritize the needs and determine if they are able

to fund the requests.

Legacy does open there building to the community if they want to have a large event or

even something small but they do have access to their technology. So if an outside group (from

the community) requests the use of the school facilities, they may also request the use of

technology such as labs, projectors, microphones… They have to fill out the appropriate

paperwork then the school usually has it set up and ready to go when they arrive.

The school does have some great benefits with technology but also some challenges that

they can work on. The best feature that the school can offer is the ever growing access to

technology for the students. Legacy is continuously are adding Chromebook carts to the

classrooms with the goal of having a class set in each classroom. The biggest challenge is cell

phones, they are a great resource for the students but they tend to use them primarily for non-

school related functions and they are a huge distraction in the classrooms.
He stated that there was no digital divide among schools in the school district because,

with Title I funding and the autonomy of the schools, there is money available (more so at low

income schools) for technology as long as the administration earmarks it for technology. Legacy

makes sure the every student has equal opportunity to learn when it comes to learning new

software that’s going on in today’s society. With appropriate use, every teacher can implement

technology in their curriculum. In today’s world, it is necessary for everyone to have some basic

knowledge of how things work in the digital world. Basic requirements such as Computer

Science classes also encourage students to be computer literate.

He gave me some good information when it comes to how technology is used and bought

for the school. I like how they are trying to put chrome books in every classroom to give students

the opportunity to learn new technology and the learn how to use computers the correct way to

do assignments and papers. And I see first-hand how the teachers incorporate it in the classrooms

and to have the computes on hand is very helpful.
