Notice of vacancy for an A 2 post: Director of the Directorate for Life Sciences: Health Research
(Article 29(2))

The Commission is seeking to fill the post of Director in charge of the Directorate for Life Sciences:
Health Research, within its Directorate-General for Research.

The Directorate is helping to establish the European Research Area by designing and implementing health
research activities. To this end it directs and coordinates work in progress and prepares future actions in
various fields including infectious diseases, genome sequencing, population ageing and the control of
transmissible diseases (within the framework of poverty reduction activities).

Applicants must have:

— a solid scientific background,

— experience in the field of health research policy,

— a proven aptitude to manage a large civil-service department (about 100 staff) responsible for
managing a large number of contracts,

— the ability to represent the Commission in political and scientific bodies at European and
international level.

The post is at Director level (A 2).

The Commission invites applications from both internal and outside applicants.

Applicants must be nationals of a Member State of the European Union and hold a university degree or
equivalent national qualification entitling them to undertake postgraduate studies (any equivalent
professional experience will be taken into account).

Applicants must have at least 15 years’ professional experience in the field of scientific research, at least
five years of which must have been spent in a management capacity.

Applicants must have a good knowledge of English or French and one other Community language;
knowledge of French and English as well as other Community languages would be an additional
advantage.

The successful candidate will be chosen in accordance with the Commission’s selection procedure.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview organised by the Commission’s Advisory
Committee on Appointments, which will be assisted by three international experts in the field of research.

Pay and conditions of employment will be those laid down for A 2 officials of the European Communities.
