HISTORY OF
SHAOLIN TEMPLE
HISTORY
• The Shaolin order dates to about 540 A.D.,

• Established by Indian Buddhist priest named Bodhidharma (Tamo in Chinese), who

travelled to China.

• At the time of the building of the temple, the emperor's gardeners had also planted
new trees. Thus the temple was named "young (or new) forest".

• Tamo, observed that the monks lacked the physical and mental stamina needed to
perform even the most basic of Buddhist meditation practices.

• Tamo countered this weakness by teaching them moving exercises, designed to both
enhance chi flow and build strength.

• This was the beginning of Shaolin Kung Fu

MISCONCEPTIONS & THREATS

• Most people don’t understand the difference between Shaolin and other martial arts.

• Shaolin kungfu is a catalyst which helps in enhancement of performance in any field and is more
of a personality development program.

• Shaolin is easy to train, economical in approach and effective .

• Low Costing of multiple/mushrooming tae-kwon-do/karate schools.

• Misconceptions of confusing Shaolin with other arts. All schools already have tae-kwon-do/karate
classes running at cheap prices.
