Keith Althouse

Ann Simpson Davis Middle School

September 3rd- October 10th

Internship Summary

Going into this internship I hoped to find out if teaching would suit me as a person and

just what a day to day looked like as a teacher. During my first internship at Ann Simpson

Middle School I was given the opportunity to shadow and intern with Keith Althouse; an 8th

Grade Science teacher. While my time at Davis I observed the different teaching mechanisms

Mr. Althouse portrayed, learned ways of beneficial ways of teaching all types of students, and

was able to teach a lesson and guide classes on my own.

After observing and shadowing Mr. Althouse I learned various methods to becoming the

understanding, outgoing, and helpful teacher I hope to be one day. On days that may have not

been on their best behavior, he demonstrated patience while also being stern to keep the kids on

task. However, on the good days he would display compassion and wit towards his students. The

students would truly form relationships with him and knew if they needed any help, they

shouldn’t be scared to ask. He also demonstrated way to teach by getting on their level. He

would pick up on 8th grade slang so he could joke around with them, break down the more

advanced words into something they could comprehend, and also see things through their

perspective. On a day to day basis i was able to go around and help the students with any

questions they had, and help them with any ideas they may need for their work. Some of the days

I was at my internship my mentor was not there, resulting in a substitute teacher in his place.

Although there was a sub Mr. Althouse told the sub that I could help them with anything they

may need. I ended up leading the class and teaching a lesson. This internship I was able to get a

hands on experience to further get a feel and understanding of this career.

During my time at Ann Simpson Davis Middle School I was given the opportunity to find

many aspects of teaching; some that I enjoy while others may not interest me. I found that I

enjoy being around kids and truly want to help educate children. However, I realized that middle

school may not be my fortay; I would much rather be with high school students due to being able

to get on their level even more with the personality I have. With hopes i plan to study

psychology and chemistry, with education following. I hope to be able to have my own high

school classroom one day and help kids with everyday needs the way many great teachers, such

as Mr. Althouse, has done for me. I believe that a teacher would best suit personality, the future

life i would like to have, and I would never get bored of it.
