In the beginning God created

heaven and earth
‫אשׁית בּ ָ ָ֣רא ֱא ִ ֑הים‬ ֖ ִ ‫בּ ְֵר‬
1:1 (bereshit_english_1.htm#C1).
‫שּׁ ַ ֖מי ִם וְאֵ ֥ ת הָאָ ֶֽרץ׃‬
ָ ‫אֵ ֥ ת ַה‬
Bereshit bara Elohim et
hashamayim ve'et ha'arets.

The earth was without form and

empty, with darkness on the face of
the depths, but God's spirit
‫ְו ָה ָ֗א ֶרץ ָהי ָ ְ֥תה ֙ת ֹה ֙וּ ו ָ֔ב ֹהוּ‬
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C2) moved
‫שׁ עַל־פּ ְֵנ֣י תְ ֑הוֹם‬ ֶ ֹ ‫ו ְ֖ח‬
1:2 on the water's surface.
‫ו ְ֣רוּ ַח ֱא ִ֔הים ְמ ַר ֶ ֖חפֶת‬
Veha'arets hayetah tohu vavohu
‫עַל־פְּנֵ ֥י הַמָּ ֽי ִם׃‬
vechoshech al-peney tehom veruach
Elohim merachefet al-peney
hamayim.

God said, 'There shall be light,' and

‫ויּ ֹאמר א הים יהי אוֹר‬

‫ַו ֥ א ֶמר ֱא ִ ֖ה ם ִ ְ֣ה ֑אוֹר‬
1:3 light came into existence.
‫וַ ֽיְהִי־ ֽאוֹר׃‬
Vayomer Elohim yehi-or vayehi-or.

God saw that the light was good,

and God divided between the light
‫ַו ַיּ ְ֧רא ֱא ִ ֛הים ֶאת־ה ָ֖אוֹר‬
and the darkness.
1:4 ‫ִי־טוֹב ַויַּב ֵ ְ֣דּל ֱא ִ֔הים‬
֑ ‫כּ‬
Vayar Elohim et-ha'or ki-tov
‫שׁ ׃‬
ֶ ֹ ‫בֵּ ֥ ין ה ָ֖אוֹר וּבֵ ֥ ין ה ַֽח‬
vayavdel Elohim beyn ha'or uveyn
hachoshech.

God named the light 'Day,' and the

darkness He named 'Night.' It was
‫ַויּ ִ ְק ָ֨רא ֱא ִ ֤הים ׀ לָאוֹ ֙ר‬
evening and it was morning, one
‫שׁ ָ ֣ק ָרא ָ ֑ליְלָה‬ֶ ֹ ‫י֔ וֹם ְול ַ֖ח‬
1:5 day.
‫ִי־ב ֹ ֶקר ֥יוֹם‬
֖ ‫ִי־ע ֶרב וַ ֽיְה‬֥ ֶ ‫וַ ֽיְה‬
Vayikra Elohim la-or yom
(‫ֶא ָחֽד׃ )פ‬
velachoshech kara laylah vayehi-
erev vayehi-voker yom echad.

God said, 'There shall be a sky

(bereshit_english_1.htm#C3) in the
middle of the water, and it shall ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֔הים י ִ ְ֥הי ָר ִ ֖קי ַע‬
1:6 divide between water and water.' ‫ִיהי ַמבְדִּ֔ יל‬ ֣ ִ ‫בּ ְ֣תוֹ ה ָ ַ֑מּי ִם ו‬
Vayomer Elohim yehi rakia betoch ‫בֵּ ֥ ין ַ ֖מי ִם לָמָ ֽי ִם׃‬
hamayim vyhi mavdil beyn mayim
lamayim.

God [thus] made the sky, and it

separated
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C4) the
‫ַו ַיּ֣עַשׂ ֱא הִים֮ ֶאת־ה ָָר ִקי ַ֒ע‬
water below the sky from the water
‫שׁ ֙ר‬ ֶ ‫ַויַּבְדֵּ֗ ל ֵ ֤בּין ַה ַ֙מּי ִם֙ ֲא‬
above the sky. It remained that way
1:7 ‫וּבין‬
֣ ֵ ‫ִמ ַ ֣תּחַת ל ָָר ִ֔קי ַע‬

‫ַה ַ֔מּי ִם ֲא ֶ ֖שׁר ֵמ ַ ֣על ל ָָר ִ ֑קי ַע‬
Vaya'as Elohim et-harakia vayavdel
‫וַ ֽיְהִי־כֵ ֽן׃‬
beyn hamayim asher mitachat
larakia uveyn hamayim asher me'al
larakia vayehi-chen.

God named the sky 'Heaven.' It was

evening and it was morning, a
‫ַויּ ִ ְק ָ ֧רא ֱא ִ ֛הים לָ ָֽר ִ ֖קי ַע‬
second day.
1:8 ‫ִי־ע ֶרב‬
֥ ֶ ‫שׁ ָ ֑מי ִם וַ ֽיְה‬
ָ
Vayikra Elohim la-rakia shamayim
(‫שׁ ִנ ֽי׃ )פ‬ ֵ ‫ִי־ב ֹ ֶקר ֥יוֹם‬
֖ ‫וַ ֽיְה‬
vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom
sheni.

God said, 'The waters under the

heaven shall be gathered to one
place, and dry land shall be seen.' It ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֗הים י ִ ָקּו֨ וּ‬
happened. ֙‫שּׁ ַ֙מי ִם‬ָ ‫ַה ַ֜מּי ִם ִמ ַ ֤תּחַת ַה‬

Vayomer Elohim yikavu hamayim ‫ֶאל־ ָמ ֣קוֹם ֶא ָ֔חד וְתֵ ָר ֶ ֖אה‬

echad vetera'eh hayabashah vayehi
chen.

God named the dry land 'Earth,' and

the gatherings of water, He named ֙‫שׁה‬
ָ ‫ַויּ ִ ְק ָ֨רא ֱא ִ ֤הים ׀ ַליּ ַ ָבּ‬
'Seas.' God saw that it was good. ‫ֶ֔א ֶרץ וּ ְל ִמ ְקוֵ ֥ה ה ַ ַ֖מּי ִם‬
1:10
Vayikra Elohim layabashah erets ‫ָק ָ ֣רא י ִ ַ֑מּים ַו ַיּ ְ֥רא ֱא ִ ֖הים‬
ulemikveh hamayim kara yamim ‫כִּי־טֽוֹב׃‬
vayar Elohim ki-tov.

God said, 'The earth shall send forth

vegetation. Seedbearing plants and
fruit trees that produce their own ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֗הים ַתּֽדְ ֵ ֤שׁא‬
kinds of fruits with seeds shall be ‫שׂב ַמז ִ ְ֣רי ַע‬ ֶ ‫שׁא ֚ ֵע‬ ֶ ֶ֔‫ָה ָ֙א ֶר ֙ץ דּ‬
1:11 on the earth.' It happened. ‫שׂה פּ ְִר ֙י‬ ֶ ֹ ‫ֶ֔ז ַרע ֵ ֣עץ פּ ֞ ְִרי ֤ע‬
Vayomer Elohim tadshe ha'arets ‫עוֹ־בוֹ‬
֖ ‫ְל ִמינ֔ וֹ ֲא ֶ ֥שׁר ז ְַר‬
deshe esev mazria zera ets pri oseh ‫עַל־ה ָ ָ֑א ֶרץ וַ ֽיְהִי־כֵ ֽן׃‬
peri lemino asher zar'o-vo al-
ha'arets vayehi-chen.

The earth sent forth vegetation,

plants bearing their own kinds of
seeds, and trees producing fruits
‫שׂב‬ֶ ‫שׁא ֵ ֣ע‬ ֶ ֶ‫וַתּוֹ ֵ֨צא ָה ָ֜א ֶרץ ֠דּ‬
containing their own kinds of seeds
‫ַמז ִ ְ֤רי ַע זֶ ַ֙רע֙ ְל ִמי ֵ֔נהוּ ו ֵ ְ֧עץ‬
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C6). God
1:12 ‫עוֹ־בוֹ‬
֖ ‫שׂה־פּ ִ ְ֛רי ֲא ֶ ֥שׁר ז ְַר‬ ֶ ֹ ‫ֽע‬
saw that it was good.
‫ְל ִמ ֵינ֑הוּ ַו ַיּ ְ֥רא ֱא ִ ֖הים‬
Vatotse ha'arets deshe esev mazria
‫כִּי־טֽוֹב׃‬
zera leminehu ve'ets oseh pri asher
zar'o-vo leminehu vayar Elohim ki-
tov.

It was evening and it was morning,

a third day. ‫ִי־ב ֹ ֶקר ֥יוֹם‬
֖ ‫ִי־ע ֶרב וַ ֽיְה‬
֥ ֶ ‫וַ ֽיְה‬
1:13
Vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom (‫ִישֽׁי׃ )פ‬ ִ ‫שׁל‬
ְ
shlishi.

God said, 'There shall be lights in

the heavenly sky
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C7) to
‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֗הים י ִ ְ֤הי‬
divide between day and night. They
‫שּׁ ַ֔מי ִם‬ ָ ‫ְמא ֹר ֹ ֙ת בּ ְִר ִ ֣קי ַע ַה‬
shall serve as omens [and define]
‫וּבין‬
֣ ֵ ‫ְל ַהבְדִּ֕ יל בֵּ ֥ ין הַיּ֖ וֹם‬
1:14 festivals, days and years.
‫ה ָ ַ֑לּיְלָה ְו ָה ֤יוּ לְא ֹת ֹ ֙ת‬
Vayomer Elohim yehi meorot
‫וּל ְ֣מוֹעֲדִ֔ ים וּ ְלי ִ ָ֖מים‬
birekia hashamayim lehavdil beyn
‫שׁ ִנ ֽים׃‬ָ ‫ְו‬
hayom uveyn halaylah vehayu
leotot ulemoadim uleyamim
veshanim.

They shall be lights in the heavenly

sky, to shine on the earth.' It
‫ְו ָה ֤יוּ ִל ְמאוֹר ֹ ֙ת בּ ְִר ִ ֣קי ַע‬
happened.
1:15 ‫שּׁ ַ֔מי ִם ְלה ִ ָ֖איר‬
ָ ‫ַה‬
Vehayu li-meorot birekia
‫עַל־ה ָ ָ֑א ֶרץ וַ ֽיְהִי־כֵ ֽן׃‬
hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'arets
vayehi-chen.

God [thus] made the two large

lights, the greater light to rule the
day, and the smaller light to rule the
night. [He also made] the stars.
1:16 Vaya'as Elohim et-sheney hameorot
hagdolim et-hamaor hagadol le-
memshelet hayom ve'et hamaor
hakaton le-memshelet halaylah ve'et
hakochavim.
‫שׁנֵ ֥י‬
ְ ‫ַו ַיּ֣עַשׂ ֱא ִ֔הים ֶאת־‬
‫ַה ְמּא ֹ֖ר ֹת ַהגְּד ִֹל֑ים‬
֙‫ֶאת־ ַה ָמּ ֤אוֹר ַהגָּדֹל‬
‫ְל ֶמ ְמ ֶ ֣שׁלֶת הַיּ֔ וֹם‬
‫ְו ֶאת־ ַה ָמּ ֤אוֹר ַה ָקּט ֹ ֙ן‬
‫ְל ֶמ ְמ ֶ ֣שׁלֶת ַה ַ֔לּיְלָה ו ֵ ְ֖את‬
‫הַכּוֹכָבִ ֽים׃‬

God placed them in the heavenly

‫ַויּ ֵ ִ֥תּן א ָ ֹ֛תם ֱא ִ ֖הים‬
sky to shine on the earth,
1:17 ‫שּׁ ָ ֑מי ִם ְלה ִ ָ֖איר‬
ָ ‫בּ ְִר ִ ֣קי ַע ַה‬
Vayiten otam Elohim birekia
‫עַל־הָאָ ֶֽרץ׃‬
hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'arets.

to rule by day and by night, and to

divide between the light and the
‫ְו ִל ְמשֹׁל֙ ַבּ ֣יּוֹם וּ ַב ַ֔לּיְלָה‬
darkness. God saw that it was
‫וּבין‬
֣ ֵ ‫ֽוּ ֲל ַהבְדִּ֔ יל בֵּ ֥ ין ה ָ֖אוֹר‬
1:18 good.
‫שׁ ַו ַיּ ְ֥רא ֱא ִ ֖הים‬ ֶ ֹ ‫ה ַ֑ח‬
Velimshol bayom uvalaylah
‫כִּי־טֽוֹב׃‬
ulehavdil beyn ha'or uveyn
hachoshech vayar Elohim ki-tov.

It was evening and it was morning,

a fourth day. ‫ִי־ב ֹ ֶקר ֥יוֹם‬
֖ ‫ִי־ע ֶרב וַ ֽיְה‬
֥ ֶ ‫וַ ֽיְה‬
1:19
Vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom (‫ְרבִיעִ ֽי׃ )פ‬
revi'i.

God said, 'The water shall teem

with swarms of living creatures.
Flying creatures shall fly over the
‫שׁ ְרצ֣ וּ‬ ְ ִ ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֔הים י‬
land, on the face of the heavenly
‫ַה ַ֔מּי ִם ֶ ֖שׁ ֶרץ ֶ ֣נפֶשׁ ַח ָיּ֑ה‬
1:20 sky.'
‫ְעוֹפף עַל־ ָה ָ֔א ֶרץ‬ ֣ ֵ ‫וְעוֹ ֙ף י‬
Vayomer Elohim yishretsu hamayim
‫שּׁמָ ֽי ִם׃‬ ָ ‫עַל־פּ ְֵנ֖י ְר ִ ֥קי ַע ַה‬
sherets nefesh chayah ve'of yeofef
al-ha'arets al-peney rekia
hashamayim.

God [thus] created the great sea

monsters
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C8), along
with every particular species of

the waters teem, and every
‫ָל־נפֶשׁ הַ ֽ ַח ָיּ֣ה ׀‬
֣ ֶ ‫ו ֵ ְ֣את כּ‬
particular species of winged flying
1:21 ‫שׁ ְר ֨צוּ‬ָ ‫שׁ ֩ר‬ ֶ ‫שׂת ֲא‬ ֶ ‫הָ ֽר ֹ ֶ֡מ‬
creature. God saw that it was good.
‫ַה ַ֜מּי ִם לְמִ ֽינֵ ֶ֗הם ְו ֵ֨את‬
Vayivra Elohim et-hataninim
‫כָּל־ע֤ וֹף ָכּנָ ֙ף ְל ִמי ֵ֔נהוּ‬
hagedolim ve'et kol nefesh
‫ַו ַיּ ְ֥רא ֱא ִ ֖הים כִּי־טֽוֹב׃‬
hachayah haromeset asher shartsu
hamayim le-minehem ve'et kol-of
kanaf leminehu vayar Elohim ki-
tov.

God blessed them, saying, 'Be

fruitful and become many, and fill
the waters of the seas. Let the ‫ַוי ָ ְ֧ב ֶר א ָ ֹ֛תם ֱא ִ ֖הים‬
flying creatures multiply on the ‫וּר ֗בוּ וּ ִמל ְ֤אוּ‬
ְ ‫ֵאמ ֹר פּ ְ֣רוּ‬ ֑ ‫ל‬
1:22
land.' ‫ֶאת־ ַה ַ֙מּי ִם֙ ַבּיּ ַ ִ֔מּים ְוה ָ֖עוֹף‬
Vayevarech otam Elohim lemor ‫ִי ֶ֥רב בָּאָ ֶֽרץ׃‬
peru urevu umil'u et-hamayim
bayamim veha'of yirev ba'arets.

It was evening and it was morning,

a fifth day. ‫ִי־ב ֹ ֶקר ֥יוֹם‬
֖ ‫ִי־ע ֶרב וַ ֽיְה‬
֥ ֶ ‫וַ ֽיְה‬
1:23
Vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom (‫ישֽׁי׃ )פ‬ ִ ‫ֲח ִמ‬
chamishi.

God said, 'The earth shall bring

forth particular species of living
creatures, particular species of
‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֗הים תּוֹ ֵ֨צא‬
livestock, land animals
‫ָה ָ֜א ֶרץ ֶ ֤נפֶשׁ ַחיּ ָה֙ ְל ִמי ָ֔נהּ‬
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C9), and
1:24 ‫ְבּהֵמָ ֥ ה ו ֶ ָ֛ר ֶמשׂ‬
beasts of the earth.' It happened.
‫ְתוֹ־א ֶרץ ְל ִמ ָינ֑הּ‬
ֶ֖ ‫ְחי‬
ַֽ ‫ו‬
Vayomer Elohim totse ha'arets
‫וַ ֽיְהִי־כֵ ֽן׃‬
nefesh chayah leminah behemah
varemes vechayeto-erets leminah
vayehi-chen.

God [thus] made particular species

of beasts of the earth, particular
‫ַו ַיּ֣עַשׂ ֱא הִים֩ ֶאת־ ַח ַ֨יּת‬
species of livestock, and particular
‫ָה ָ֜א ֶרץ ְל ִמי ָ֗נהּ‬
species of animals that walk the
‫ְו ֶאת־ ַה ְבּ ֵה ָמה֙ ְל ִמי ָ֔נהּ וְאֵ ֛ ת‬
1:25 land. God saw that it was good.
‫ָל־ר ֶמשׂ הָ ֽ ֲאדָ ָ ֖מה‬
ֶ֥ ‫כּ‬
Vaya'as Elohim et chayat ha'arets
‫ְל ִמ ֵינ֑הוּ ַו ַיּ ְ֥רא ֱא ִ ֖הים‬
leminah ve'et habehemah leminah
‫כִּי־טֽוֹב׃‬
ve'et kol-remes ha'adamah leminehu
vayar Elohim ki-tov.

God said, 'Let us

man with our image and likeness

Bereshit - Genesis Chapter 1
‫ֲשׂה‬ ֥ ֶ ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֔הים נַ ֽע‬
‫מוּתנוּ‬
֑ ֵ ְ‫אָדם ְבּ ַצל ֵ ְ֖מנוּ כִּד‬ ָ֛
‫ְוי ְִרדּ ֩וּ בִדְ ַ֨גת ַה ָ֜יּם וּבְע֣ וֹף‬
֙‫שּׁ ַ֗מי ִם וּ ַב ְבּ ֵה ָמה‬
ָ ‫ַה‬
‫וּ ְבכָל־ ָה ָ֔א ֶרץ‬
‫וּ ְבכָל־ה ֶ ָ֖ר ֶמשׂ הָ ֽר ֹמֵ ֥ שׂ‬
‫עַל־הָאָ ֶֽרץ׃‬

God [thus] created man with His

image. In the image of God, He
‫ַויִּב ְָ֨רא ֱא ִ ֤הים ׀‬
created him, male and female He
‫ֶאת־הָ ֽאָדָ ם֙ ְבּ ַצל ְ֔מוֹ בְּצֶ ֥ לֶם‬
1:27 created them.
‫ֱא ִ ֖הים בּ ָ ָ֣רא א ֹ֑תוֹ זָכָ ֥ר‬
Vayivra Elohim et-ha'adam
‫וּנְ ֵק ָ ֖בה בּ ָ ָ֥רא א ָֹתֽם׃‬
betsalmo betselem Elohim bara oto
zachar unekevah bara otam.

God blessed them. God said to

them, 'Be fertile and become many
(bereshit_english_1.htm#C12). Fill
‫ִים‬֒ ‫ַוי ָ ְ֣ב ֶר א ֹתָ ם֮ ֱא ה‬
the land and conquer it. Dominate
‫ו ַ֨יּ ֹא ֶמר ָל ֶ֜הם ֱא ִ֗הים פּ ְ֥רוּ‬
the fish of the sea, the birds of the
‫וּרב֛ וּ וּ ִמל ְ֥אוּ ֶאת־ה ָ ָ֖א ֶרץ‬ ְ
sky, and every beast that walks the
1:28 ֙‫וּר ֞דוּ בִּדְ ַג֤ת ַהיּ ָם‬ ְ ‫ְו ִכב ֻ ְ֑שׁ ָה‬
land.
‫שּׁ ַ֔מי ִם‬ָ ‫וּבְע֣ וֹף ַה‬
Vayevarech otam Elohim vayomer
‫שׂת‬ ֶ ֥ ֶ‫וּ ְבכָל־ ַח ָיּ֖ה הָ ֽר ֹמ‬
lahem Elohim peru urevu umil'u et-
‫עַל־הָאָ ֶֽרץ׃‬
ha'arets vechiveshuha uredu bidegat
hayam uve'of hashamayim uvechol-
chayah haromeset al-ha'arets.

God said, 'Behold, I have given you

every seedbearing plant on the face
of the earth, and every tree that has ‫ו ַ֣יּ ֹא ֶמר ֱא ִ֗הים ִהנֵּה֩ נָתַ֨ תִּ י‬
seedbearing fruit. It shall be to you ‫שׂב ׀ ז ֵ ֹ֣ר ַע‬ ֶ ‫ָל־ע‬ ֣ ֵ ‫ָל ֶ֜כם ֶאת־כּ‬
for food. ‫שׁ ֙ר עַל־פּ ְֵנ֣י‬ ֶ ‫ֶ֗ז ַרע ֲא‬
1:29
Vayomer Elohim hineh natati ‫כָל־ ָה ָ֔א ֶרץ ְו ֶאת־כָּל־ה ֵ ָ֛עץ‬

zara lachem yihyeh le-ochlah.

For every beast of the field, every

bird of the sky, and everything that
walks the land, that has in it a
‫אָרץ‬ ֶ ‫ֽוּ ְלכָל־ ַח ַיּ֣ת ֠ ָה‬
living soul, all plant vegetation
‫שּׁ ַ֜מי ִם וּל ְ֣כ ֹל‬ָ ‫ָל־עוֹף ַה‬ ֨ ‫וּ ְלכ‬

God saw all that he had made, and

behold, it was very good. It was
evening and it was morning, the ֙‫ַו ַיּ ְ֤רא ֱא הִים‬
1:31 sixth day. ‫שׂה‬ ָ ֔ ‫ֶאת־כָּל־ ֲא ֶ ֣שׁר ָע‬
Vayar Elohim et-kol-asher asah ‫ֵה־טוֹב ְמ ֑א ֹד‬

In the beginning...
Others translate this, 'In the beginning of God's creation of
heaven and earth, the earth was without form and empty...'
(Rashi). Still others combine the first three verses: 'In the
beginning of God's creation....when the earth was without
form and empty....God said, 'Let there be light.' (Bereshith
Rabbah).
God's spirit
Others: 'God's wind.'
sky
(Saadia) Rakia in Hebrew, literally 'spread' or 'expanse.'
Usually translated as 'firmament.'

it separated
Or 'He divided' (Septuagint).

It remained that way

Usually translated, 'It was so.' Later, we translate this as,
'It happened.'

Or, 'specific species of trees that produce fruits with seeds.'

to a pair of particularly great sea creatures, the Leviathan and
its mate. See Isaiah 27:1, Psalms 74:14, 104:26, Job 3:8,
40:25.

Let us
God was speaking to all the forces of creation that He had
brought into existence (cf. Targum Yonathan; Ramban). Now
that all the ingredients of creation had essentially been
completed, all would participate in the creation of man, the
crown of creation. Others interpret 'we' in the majestic sense,
and translate the verse, 'I will make man in My image'
(Emunoth veDeyoth 2:9; Ibn Ezra).
with our image and likeness
Man is thus a microcosm of all the forces of creation. A
major part of the Kabbalah deals with explaining exactly how
this is so (see Nefesh HaChaim 1:1). Moreover, of all
creation, only man resembles God in having free will
(Maimonides, Yad, Teshuvah 5:1). Others explain 'image' and
'likeness' here to refer to a sort of conceptual archetype,
model, or blueprint that God had previously made for man
(Rashi). This 'model' is seen as the primeval man' (Adam
Kadmon).
Be fertile...
Some say that this is a commandment (cf. Chinukh), while
others maintain that it is a blessing (see Tosafoth,
Yevamoth 65b, s.v. VeLo; Maharsha, Sanhedrin59b,
s.v. VeHarey).
