PEER PRESSURE: NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF CRIMINOLOGY
STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
Studying is never been easy especially being a college student. Each day,
every student such as Criminology students here in Eastern Samar State University
struggles to pass their subjects and to get good grades at every semester just to be
safe from the elimination of their courses. They encounters in their daily lives different
problems and personal issues that sometimes becomes a hindrance and a barrier to
their study. They face factors such as environmental factors that greatly affect their
academic performances in school, resulting to failure of grades and sometimes
dropping out of school. One type of those environmental factors is what we called ‘’Peer
Pressure.’’
This study aims to find out the negative effects of Peer Pressure to
Criminology students in Eastern Samar State University especially on their performance
in school in terms of academic level.
CHAPTER I
A.INTRODUCTION
According to starlet (2010), “the changing ways of life of our peers often force us
to change our ways of looking at life and leading it.”
Adolescence is a period of an individual that is transitory when a child reaches
the point in changing its childhood to adulthood (Adeniyi & Kolawole, 2015). Thus
individuals are prone to temptations in the social contextualization concepts, for
example, socializing with others tend to do some activities such as napping and drinking
during classes ( Bonein & Denont- Boemont, 2013).
‘’Peer Pressure is one of the powerful forces that influence teenagers Molina,
2017).’’ The closeness between a student and their peers (classmates/friends) has a
negative impact or effect like cutting classes and absenteeism. A negative peer
pressure is a factor in lowest test scores, Johnson (2000). Because of this negative
effect from peer pressure students where encourage or tend to have some bad
behaviour like drinking alcohol, smoking, taking drugs, even delinquency and juvenile
that causes their low academic performances in their class.
Peer pressure does not only affect students study and their academic
performances in school but can also cause emotional and mental health problems like
anxiety and depression.
B.BACKGROUND STUDY

‘’Negative peer pressure is when there are bad things going on and you are being
influenced, persuaded, or pushed into doing something because of peer pressure
(Salinas, 2012)’’
Students experienced Peer pressure as they entered the adolescence stage
where in they seek comfort on their peers (classmates and friends) and tend to do what
their peers are doing without knowing if it is good or bad for them, or they are aware that
it is wrong but they choose to ignore their common sense and own judgement because
they want to be accepted by their peers and they are also afraid of being rejected.
According to some psychologists, rejection from peers is what causes disturbances to a
students personality. It is said that students who suffers from rejection on their
classmates and friends feel lonely and depress especially when no one is talking or
making friends with them. This rejection also results to lower self-esteem to students
that affect their performance in school.
In the Maslow Heirarchy of Needs, belongingness is one of the essential part of
every person’s life. Every individual wants to feel that they belong to a particular group
of people that they like, so they find ways to fit in and be accepted and one of it is
through imitation, or doing the things or activities their peers are doing.
Generally, students spend more time with their classmates and friends and they
are not even aware how their peers affect their behaviour most especially their
academic performances in school.
C.THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Adolescence social environment could affect students in their adolescence,

because at this stage students choose to communicate mostly to their peers than their
family. They become more independent to them especially in making choices and
enhancing their moral values in life (Uslu, 2013) . An individual’s development is gratly
affected by their environment and through socializing with other people around them.
Academically students are conjectured to be correlational by the support given by the
parents, the teachers and the peer of teenagers that affect their level of academic
performance (Chen, 2008). Peer pressure is described to have a positive and negative
impact among individuals and even without effect to a person because peer pressure is
a continuous learning (Gulati, 2017).
This study where being related to “Psychosocial Theory’’ by Erik Erikson. His
theory identifies and explain the eight (8) stages of life, from infancy to late adulthood. In
ever stage the person or the individual will be experiencing psychosocial crisis, where in
these experiences or crisis will result to a negative or positive effect to the person’s
personality or behaviour.
This study will focus on the fifth (5th) stage of Psychosocial Theory called “Identity
VS. Role Confusion.” At this stage, the person or the individual is experiencing his/her
personal sense of beliefs, values, norms and goals in life. They identify or seek their
identity through their environment, where he/she develops or learn with the help and
contribution coming from the people surrounding them especially in school. This is the
stage of life where “Peer Pressure” is being triggered because of peer group
(classmates and friends). They may dictating or forcing you to do or commit certain
things you weren’t used to do that causes disordinance or disturbances to a person’s
will. Because of this, his/her development or improvement especially in academic
performances in school is greatly affected.
D.CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study/research aims to identify and describe ‘’Peer Pressure’’ as one of the
environmental factor in the studies of Criminology students and it’s negative effect on
their Academic Performances in school.

The figure 1 shows the estimated diagram consisting variables (independent

and dependent) which are related to each other, according to the hypothesis concluded
by the researchers.
E.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In this study, researchers are expecting to find explanation and answers to the
following questions :

1. What is Peer Pressure?

2. Why is Peer Pressure consider as an environmental factor that has a
negative effect on Criminology students study?
3. How do Peer Pressure affects the academic performances of Criminology
students in school?

F.SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study has a purpose to determine the effect (negative effect) of Peer
Pressure on the Criminology students most especially on their academic performances
in school. This study is only delimited to the first year student of BS Criminology in
Eastern Samar State University. Only 20 representatives (students) per class section
take part on the study by answering questions in our survey that was conducted
November 29, 2019 at ESSU campus.

G.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is to deeply understand “Peer Pressure” especially

its negative effect on students particularly Criminology students. This will also add up to
the existing knowledge of students and their awareness about ‘’Peer Pressure.’’ This
will also benefit to teachers and instructors of university on how they will be able to help
their students to overcome ‘’Peer Pressure” especially inside the classroom.
H.DEFINITION OF TERMS

Academic Performance –

Adolescence -

Peer/s – a social group / classmates / friends

Peer Pressure – the impact or the influence of peers to an individual or student

CHAPTER II

REVIEWS OF RELATED LITERATURE

Studies show that the influence of peer groups among student can boost their
anxiety especially pertaining to their education (Kadir, Atmowasdoyo & Salija 2018).
The relationship within the group with its peers are co-related with each other, hence
the direction of this particular relationship should be monitored were these relationships
should go considering all possible factors correlated within the groups outcome (Wilson,
2016). Peer pressure is being experience by many teenagers of the society,
professionals understood the concept of peer influence that could affect teenagers
especially students in a negative way which can be prevented by educating and
preparing teenagers to face the negative aspects caused by peer pressure (Temitope &
Og0nsakin, 2015). Similarly peer influence among teenagers does not directly affect
them in a negative way but it varies in how much and how the students receive the
climate of the peers coming from the group (Mosha, 2017).
Adolescence gaining social support from its peers is an important factor to cope
with different problems and illnesses by letting go of emotions by talking someone.
Social support plays an important role for teenagers to lessen the effects of stressful
situations and stressors through the support of the peers in the group (Esen &
Gundogdu 2010). Despite the various studies conducted for understanding the effects
of peer group in student’s academic performance, no one has yet understood the nature
of peer effects among students (Zhang, 2010). Knowing how the teenagers interact with
their peers and how they interact with each other and how presence of peer group affect
student’s academic achievement in school plays an important role for various categories
and even the whole educational system (Leka, 2015). Peer pressure is commonly
described as peers encouraging other teenagers to do things (Santor, Messervey &
Kusumakar, 2000). Peer pressure is also caused by parent’s lack of supervision
towards their children during adolescence, children tend to enjoy their peers company
and spend with their peers more during the adolescence period (Puligni, 1993).
Interaction of students and their peers are mostly to influence the students and
can be crucial for the student to determine their choice and could affect student
performance ( De Giorgi ,n.d.).
Understanding peer influence towards teenagers is important for developing and
understanding how to improve socioeconomic policies (Carman & Zhang, 2011). Peer
among youth plays a vital role during the adolescence of a teenager. This is the time
when teenagers develop deep friendship among their peers and become permanent
during their adolescence (Guzman, 2017). Peer pressure towards persons behavior is
said to be a social phenomenon where the members of a particular society or may not
be influence negatively but majority are affected by the undesirable behavior of those
people who resist what others do (Gulati, 2017). Looking to the different group of factors
that influence adolescence in their completion of their academic excellence it is further
hindered by developmental challenges (Chen, 2008). An individual seek emotional
support towards communicating publicly and showing his private objectives or goals.
Indeed through showing your emotions to others individual can get emotional benefits
from it because it could help them to overcome temptation and could give them
emotional benefits. (Borein & Boemont, 2013). Also, peer groups answer questions from
teenager different concern from adolescence stage including physical appearance or
changing bodies (Ademiyi & Kolawole, 2015). Peer pressure could easily affect the self-
esteem of students that an important factor adolescence. Individual adapt attitudes
towards a certain aspect that they encountered or they are aware of (Uslu, 2013). In
many events student fantasizing and visualizing what they dreamed to became through
with their colleagues atmosphere. Eventually, they pursue their choices through with the
influence of peer pressure (Owoyele & Toyobo, 2008). The pressure among peer group
among its member may engage to do undesired things or negative behavior with the
presence of a particular peer group leader who engage its member to do deviant acts or
promote undesirable things to the group (Dumas, Ellis, & Wolfe, 2012).
Peer group is important in the social context that plays a vital role in society and
to determine the academic achievement that affect during development relatively with
each other (Chen, 2008). Adaptive behavior of the development increases become
broader and complex and as the age increases (Yonus, Mushtaq & Qaiser n.d.).
School that the students attend to serves an institution among students that
determine their learning capacity based on the school environment that gives the
learning experience toward students (Korir, 2014). Thus choosing major courses within
an institution are major choices a student intends to make but it is affected by their
interactions among other students (Porter & Umbach, 2006). Hence, the behavior of an
individual have seen similarities among the group due to the effect of their peers, it is
still difficult to relate the consequences that the individual within the group are similar
with each other or social to be pursuing their intentions together to have similar
outcomes (Kremer & Levy, 2008). Interactions between students with their agemates
appeal to enhance their learning capacity under the guidance of an adult educator
(Kinderman, 2016).
Therefore, Peer Pressure cannot directly be shown to have negative or positive
impact towards students’ academic performance but one can realize the appropriate
coping mechanism for a problem as a technique to avoid and fight peer pressure
optimistically.
