Spray Coverage

eering. Engineering. Engineering. Engineering. Engineeri

SPRAY ANGLE TERMS
Four terms are commonly used to
describe spray coverage:

Spray Angle:
The included angle of the
b c d

spray as measured close to the

nozzle orifice. Since the droplets
are immediately acted upon by
external forces (gravity and
moving gases, for example), this
measurement is useful only for
determining spray coverage close

to the nozzle. The spray angles

lis-ted for nozzles in this catalog
             ! " # $ % & ' % ( ( ) ! * ! + , + ! - " ,

are angles at the nozzle, measured

. / + . , 0 1 2 3 4 5 4 0 4 6 4 3 0 1 7 5 7 2

at the nozzle’s design pressure, 4 5 8 9 : ; 9 : < = : = = : ; = : > ? : = ? : @ A : = ; : ? B : ? @ : A

which is highlighted in each chart

of flow rate vs. pressure.

Actual Spray Coverage:

nozzle.
Effective Spray Angle:

(C) The angle calculated from the

actual coverage (B) at a distance

Theoretical Spray Coverage:

(E) The coverage at distance (D) if
3 5 8 A : ; @ : < = 9 : = = A : ; = @ : > ? 9 : ? ? B : ? A 9 : A ; 9 : A

the spray moved in a straight line. E 5 8 ; : 9 > : 9 = ? : 9 = @ : 9 ? 9 : 9 ? ; : 9 A 9 : 9 A @ : 9 ; > : 9

EXAMPLES:
4 5 5 8 ; : > C : B = ; : A = C : = ? A : > ? > : @ A B : > ; A : 9

Problem: To achieve a 10”

diameter spray coverage from a

nozzle mounted 15” from the

target, what spray angle would

be required?
4 7 5 8 > : @ = < : ? ? B : < A ; : A ; ? : C B = : B @ ; : ;

Solution: 40° Spray Angle 4 1 5 8 = 9 : C ? = : C A ? : C ; A : > B ; : > @ B : <

Problem: How far from the target

angle be mounted in order to

4 5 8 ; B : > C = : @

achieve a 36” diameter spray?
