4. Verification of credentials

On a proposal from the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market, Parliament decided to vali-
date the mandate of Mr Booth.

5. Membership of Parliament

The President announced that Mrs Lousewies van der Laan had become a member of the Second Chamber
of the Netherlands Parliament and that, pursuant to Rule 8(4), her membership of the European Parliament
would cease with effect from 30 January 2003.

Pursuant to Rule 8 of its Rules of Procedure and Article 12(2), second subparagraph, of the Act concerning
the election of the representatives of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, Parliament
established the vacancy and informed the Member State concerned accordingly.

The President announced that the competent Netherlands authorities had informed him that Mrs Lousewies
van der Laan was to be replaced by Mrs Boogerd-Quaak with effect from 5 February 2003.

The President welcomed the new Member and drew attention to the provisions of Rule 7(5).
