Ear Flap Baby Hat

By Sharon Hoelzle
This will fit a newborn with a head circumference of about 14”. Materials: Simply Soft by Caron, in your choice of colors Size 8 DPN’s (set of 5) Tapestry needle

Ear flap: Cast on 2 sts Row 1: Knit Row 2: K1, M1, K1 Row 3 and all odd rows: Knit Row 4: K1, M1. K to last st, M1, K1 Continue in this manner until you have 17 sts, leave sts on DPN Repeat above for 2nd ear flap.

On a third DPN, cast on 38 more stitches by casting on 19 sts on each DPN You will now have a total of 72 sts. (17 from each ear flap=34, plus the 19 on each DPN you just casted on (38 sts)=72. This next part is a bit tricky, but necessary to keep the ear flaps even on each side… Slip one st from the 19 sts on the DPN’s onto the ear flap DPN so you now have 18 stitches on all four needles. Position them so that the 18 sts NOT part of the ear flap are in between the two ear flaps. Knit one round even to connect everything together in the round. (You should now have a DPN with 18 sts and an ear flap hanging from it, a DPN with just 18 sts, another DPN with 18 sts and an ear flap and a DPN with just 18 sts.) Continue to knit in the round by knitting a K2, P2 rib for approximately 1 inch. At this point, you can either: 1) Continue the hat in all one color 2) K 3 rounds in stockinette (knitting 3 rows even) and add a stripe of another color for 5 rows and then return to your main color 3) K 3 rounds in stockinette (knitting 3 rows even) and work color blocks as follows: next 2 rows, alternate 6 sts in contrasting color and 6 sts in main color. Next 2 rows, knit even in main color. Next 2 rows, alternate 6 sts in main and contrasting colors and for the final 2 rows, knit in main color.

Start decrease as follows: Row 1: (Knit 10 sts, K2tog), repeat this across row/round Row 2 and all even rows: knit Row 3: (Knit 9, K2tog), repeat across round Row 5: (Knit 8, K2tog), repeat across round Row 7: (Knit 7, K2tog), repeat across round Row 9: (Knit 6, K2tog), repeat across round Row 11: (Knit 5, K2tog), repeat across round Row 13: (Knit 4, K2tog), repeat across round Row 15: (Knit 3, K2tog), repeat across round Row 17: (Knit 2, K2tog), repeat across round Row 19: (Knit 1, K2tog), repeat across round Row 21: K2tog across round Cut an 8 inch tail and using tapestry needle pull yarn through remaining sts. Weave tail through inside of hat to secure. Optional ties: Cut six strands to double desired length of ties. Fold in half. Using a crochet hook, pull folded loop through bottom of ear flap. Take the 12 ends and pull them through the loop you’ve created to secure them onto the ear flap (same process as adding fringe to a scarf). Braid strands and tie knot on end. Repeat for second ear flap.
