PROJECT SUMMARY

Title: Effectiveness of Mixed Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and Coconut (Cocos

nucifera) in
Making CocoSol Moisturizing Soap
Researchers: Arabella Tupas, Althea Amparado, Samantha Alocelja

A. Rationale: People nowadays, especially women really want their skin to be

flawless and smooth. Usually this problem occurs in women aging 13 and
above. Due to the normal change of temperature in Kidapawan city, from hot
days to cold nights, people may have the possibility to acquire dry skin because
dry skin is more common in colder winter months and drier climates. Several
home remedies, such as decreasing bathing frequency and lubricating the skin
with moisturizers after showers, can help control and prevent dry skin.
Moisturizing soap plays an important role in moisturizing skin in different ways.
It was produced to help those people who have dry skin to achieve a smooth
skin. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and coconut (Cocos Nucifera) milk can
be alternative material in producing moisturizing soap. Besides cooking, tomato
can be used in a number of ways to enhance your beauty. It was considered to
be panacea of skin. Applying tomato juice or rubbing tomato halve, on the skin
evens out the skin and revives the glow giving you a healthy looking skin. It
contains a high amount of Vitamin C, which was known to brighten skin. The
vitamins such as the vitamin A, flavonoid B complex, Thiamin, folates, niacin,
etc. were also present in tomatoes. Coconut is known for its organic coconut
oil. Coconut oil is a common cooking oil and ingredient in food. Outside of the
kitchen, however coconut has also many other uses involving external
application to the skin. Coconut milk also known as Nariyal ka doodh in Hinde,
is often considered a “Miracle liquid”. Application of coconut milk over dry skin
can achieve glowing skin, because coconut milk is a great moisturizer due to
its soothing properties. Coconut milk contains good concentration of lauric acid,
a medium chain fatty acid which gets converted to morolaurin in the body, a
compound with antiviral and antibacterial properties. Coconut milk is also
packed with vitamin C, E, B1, B3, and B6. In today’s modern world, almost
every product has been commercialized and people seek for products that are
more natural and cheaper instead. Tomato and coconut has great potentials in
producing moisturizing soap. Tomato and coconut will be used as an ingredient
for moisturizing soap to its effectiveness.

B. Statement of the Problem: This study was attempted to determine the

effectiveness of moisturizing soap:
1. What was the quality of CocoSol moisturizing soap in terms of:
a.) Odor
b.) color
2. Was the CocoSol moisturizing soap effective in terms of texture of the skin after
using?
3. What was the most effective Cocosol moisturizing soap?

C. Hypothesis of the Study: The researchers would like to test if:

The larger amount of coconut milk and tomato extract, the more it
will be effective to the skin.

D. Method: a. The researchers will prepare the materials.

b. The tomatoes will be chopped roughly
c. The chopped tomatoes will be placed into a colander lined with
cheesecloth.
d. 2 tbsp. of iodized salt will be sprinkled to the tomatoes.
e. The fabric will be secured with rubber band and refrigerate
over night.
f. The tomato water will be collected after refrigerating it.
g. A 7.5 mL of tomato water will be put into container 1, 15 mL to
container 2 and 22.5 mL to container 3.
h. The coconut milk will be extracted from the coconut meat.
i. A 7.5 mL of coconut milk will be poured into container 1, 15 mL to
container 2 and 22.5mL to container 3.
j. A 2 tsp. of vegetable oil and 2 tsp. of sugar will be put to each of t
the container.
k. The sugar will be mixed well until it dissolves completely.
l. A 7.5 mL of Vodka and 5 mL of Glycerin will be poured to each of
the container and everything will be mixed well completely.
m. The researchers will set aside the mixtures and prepare 3 pieces
of Glycerin soap base.
n. Each bar will be cutted thinly and each cutted bar will be melted by
double boiling.
o. The researchers will pour each melted bar to each mixture and
prepare the molders.
p. The mixtures will be placed to the molders and it will be left for 24
hours until soaps will be ready for testing

E. Materials

 ( 1 kg.) Coconut Meat

 ( 30 ml ) Vegetable Oil
 ( 30 ml. ) ( 6 tsp ) White Sugar
 (alcohol) ( 22.5 ml ) ( 4.5 tsp )Vodka
 (4 pounds) Ripe Tomatoes
 (2 tbsp.) Iodized
 (15 mL) (3 tsp.) Glycerin
 Colander
 Pot
 Piece of Cloth
 1 rubber band
 3 Containers
 3 pieces of Glycerin Soap Base
 3 molders

F. Risk Assessment: In making the CocoSol moisturizing soap, it includes

melting the glycerin soap by double-boiling. In this part the method is pretty
risky because we need to mix immediately the melted bar and raw materials
even though it is still hot and risky. Since the melted bar will easily-dry, we
must be careful in doing this part to avoid getting harm.
