Feast

The devotion to the Sto. Niño (Holy Child) is the oldest and one of the most popular in the Philippines.
When Legazpi landed on the island of Cebu in 1565, one of the soldiers found an image of the Child Jesus. It is
believed to be the same statue Magellan had given to the wife of the chieftain of the island after her baptism.
The image is venerated today in the Basilica of Cebu. For Filipino Catholics the Holy Child represents a God
who is accessible to all and can be approached without fear. The devotion instils the virtues of simplicity,
obedience, and trust in God. At the same time it calls for mature discipleship and loving service to all.

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

above the heavens his glory.

Who has risen on high to his throne
yet stoops from the heights to look down
to look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly.

from his misery he raises the poor

Let us pray to Christ, the source of hope for all who know his name. Let us pray to him:
 Hear us, Lord, for the glory of your name.
Lord Jesus, you are in the midst of those who gather in your name,
– hear the prayers of your universal Church.

May those who confess your holy name be united in your truth,
– and fervent in your love.

Look with mercy on the flock you have gathered together in your name,
– let no one whom the Father has given you perish.

Send workers into your vineyard,

– and glorify your name among the nations.

Lord, your name is blessed for all ages,

– show the wonders of your saving power to our deceased brothers and sisters.

This Jesus is “the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.” There is no
salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be
saved.

INTERCESSIONS
All praise and honor to Jesus Christ! He lives forever to intercede for us, and he is able to save those who
approach the Father in his name. Sustained by our faith, let us call upon him:

Lord, may your name be glorified.

As the day draws to a close, Sun of Justice, we invoke your name upon the whole human race,
– so that all men may enjoy your never failing light.

O Christ, you were raised up by the Father and given the name that is above all other names,
– may your people, strengthened in the hope of a heavenly resurrection, persevere to the end.

O Christ, at your name every knee in heaven, on earth and under the earth will bend in adoration,
– pour out your love upon all men that they may join together in proclaiming your glory.

May we bear hardships with courage for your name's sake,

– and be generous in serving you.
