Transitioning from Exch 2007 to 2010.

Step 1. Install service pack 2 on the exchange 2007 server. If exchange 2003, then
that also needs sp2.

Step 2. The order to deploy exchange 2010 if roles are to be placed on separate

 Client Access Server

 Hub Transport

 Unified messaging

 Mailbox

Step 3. Configure legacy DNS host names ( also implement certificates if required)

We have to creat static records in the dns so that the clients know which mail server
that they should connect.

Now, once the Exchange server is deployed and is running in an co-existance

environment, we want to keep the same DNS name so that clients are not confused,
and the exchange automatically redirects the client to their correct mailbox server,
ie, either Exch-07 or Exch-10.

In the dns we will create the following host records. (our domain is
i. - (this record pre-exist, and was used my the
clients the connect to Exch-07 previously)

ii. 

step 4. Moving the OAB- go to the properties of the OAB  select

distribution tab  and tick in the check box the following

1. webbased

2. Public folder dist..

Step 5. Move mailbox- in 2010, we can move mailbox when they are online. If the
client is using is accessing the mail at that time, they may just have to restart their

But if we r moving mails from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, then the database
has to be taken offline.

To move the database:

Select the mailboxe’s of the users in the receipient node. Right click and select
NEW LOCAL MOVE REQUEST.. then select the server to move (in ourcase its the
exch-10), then select the database on the exch-10 where we can move our
mailboxes .

Once done with the wizard…

Now check weather the mailboxes are moved.

We can use move request tool, and see the status of (complete/ que).

Step 6. Replicate the PUBLIC FOLDERS.

Go to the toolbox

Open Public Folder Management Console, here we can see the public folders.
Check the server, on which the public folders are currently hosted.

Okay, now to replicate not move, the public floders

1. On the Exch-10 server create a new public folder database.

3. Right / click on each public folder  properties – and then select the
replication tab.

Add the public folder database we just create on exch-10 server

Also select the tick mark the – use public folder database replication and
select always RUN.

Do the same for all the servers.

Now wait for same time so replication can take place.

Perform these steps for all the public folders we want to replicate.

1c the replication is done, go to the public folders properties in the public folder
management and select the replication tab, and remove the exch-07 public folders.

We can use the following to check if the transition is done successfully:

2. An online tool from Microsoft exchange team called EXCHANGE REMOTE

3. Finally ----- uuhhh…. We r done—now we can remove Exch-2007 from the

control panel.
