SECTION 02222 EMBANKMENTS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SCOPE OF WORK A.

Furnish all labor, materials, and incidentals required to construct cuts and fills associated required slopes and embankments as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein.

1.2 RELATED WORK A. B. Earth excavation and backfill is included in Section 02200. Earth excavation and backfill for roadways is included in Section 02226.

C. Slope Protection in Section 02332. 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. B. Field Testing Control. Qualifications of the commercial testing laboratory who will be performing all testing in accordance with sec 01400 QUALITY CONTROL. Soil tests, when required, shall be governed by the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

C. Maximum density for compacted materials placed under this Section shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D1557. In place dry density of compacted fill shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D1556 or D2922. D. The quantitative determination of particle size analysis of soils shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D422. E. The test method for the determination of the liquid limit, the plastic limit, and the plasticity index values of materials placed under this Contract shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D4318. All tests required for preliminary review of materials shall be made by an approved testing laboratory at the expense of the Contractor. Two initial gradation tests shall be made for each type of embedment and fill material and one additional gradation test shall be made for each additional 500 metric tons of each material. In addition, sulphate and chloride test results shall be submitted for each borrow material source.

G. Two laboratory Modified Proctor Tests shall be performed for each distinctive type of fill material proposed. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Submit results for all specified soil tests for review in accordance with Section 01300.

as directed. or following removal of all soft and unsuitable materials such as organics and large rocks. grade stakes shall be set to show the intersection of embankment slopes with ground surfaces and the depth of fill to be made at various points on the site. in accordance with sec 01400 QUALITY CONTROL PART 2 . tree trimmings. all surfaces shall have standing water removed from all depressions and shall be properly moistened and sufficiently clean to obtain a suitable bond with the fill. The Contractor shall keep all slopes dressed as the embankment work proceeds so that when the top is reached only fine grading will be necessary. cobbles. sod and organic topsoil. and rock fragments not containing adequate amounts of finer material to fill the voids shall not be permitted. Classification of embankment materials shall be made by an approved testing laboratory.04. SP. SM. using a level bubble. roots.B. At the beginning of embankment construction. and rock fragments shall not exceed 75 mm in maximum dimension. the Contractor shall make a sufficient number of slope boards or templates by means of which. Fill material after placement shall be free from segregation of material or pockets of material differing in gradation from the surrounding materials. As the work proceeds. The location of borrow areas shall be acceptable to the Engineer. The interior and exterior embankment cut and fill slopes shall be compacted prior to placement of the geomembrane liner on the interior slopes. the order of the excavation. Where new material abuts old material. Each control strip may remain in place and become a portion of the completed fill. I. The control strips shall be constructed under the supervision of the Engineer. The Graded Stone Bedding layer to be placed on the exterior slopes shall also be compacted. The material used in constructing the control strip(s) shall meet the requirements of the materials as specified in the fill. The determination of the required field density of the compacted fill. Embankment cuts and fills shall be constructed to the lines and grades indicated on the Drawings and as required to increase such elevations to allow for subsequent shrinkage or settlement. the subgrade shall be prepared by levelling and rolling by several passes of an acceptable roller so that the surface materials of the subgrade will meet the minimum required density for sands used as embankment fill. as described herein. and the deposit and compaction of all excavation materials shall be as specified. either original ground or embankment fill. The subgrade for the control strip shall be prepared in accordance with these specifications and shall be acceptable to the Engineer prior to placement.preparation for placing embankment fill. excess suitable material obtained from site excavations and structure and trench excavation shall be used for the construction of fills and embankments unless otherwise indicated. Any excavation performed by the Contractor for his own convenience in the foundation preparations shall be replaced by material having qualities of impermeability and density at least equivalent to the original foundation material. Both materials shall then be worked to bond them together. or equal. E.

The top surface of the fill shall be kept crowned. to provide the required amount of water for proper compaction. and placing operations shall be such that the materials. Each layer shall be compacted to 95% of the modified proctor maximum dry density determined from laboratory testing ASTM D1557 and control strips. with grades not to exceed 2 percent. the Contractor will be required to excavate drainage channels or perform such work as may be necessary to reduce the moisture content of the material. If the fill material in excavations contains an excess of moisture prior to excavation. One control strip shall be constructed at the start of fill construction and an additional control strip shall be constructed whenever a significant change is made in the type or source of material. Harrowing or other working of the material on the embankment may be required to produce the required uniformity of water content. The moisture content shall be adjusted as required to achieve the required compaction. Supplementary water. will be blended sufficiently to secure the best practicable degree of compaction. To obtain the necessary moisture content. and other vehicles on the embankments. to such maximum size. Details of the control strip construction. In no case shall the horizontal width of the bench be less than the depth of the layer of fill to be bedded therein nor shall the vertical side of the bench be greater in height than 600 mm. Density tests shall be located in accordance with ASTM D3665. if necessary. K. N. Motor graders and bulldozers shall be used on each lift to remove mounds and ridges caused by the dumping operation and to obtain uniform thickness prior to compacting. shall be cut or plowed into benches having level beds and vertical sides. hauling. and planned field density testing shall be submitted to the Engineer prior to constructing the control strip. Combined excavation. Permanent fills and embankments shall be constructed in horizontal layers not exceeding 300 mm in uncompacted thickness. The Contractor will be required to break up the earthfill materials. the material in each layer of the embankments shall have the moisture content necessary to achieve the required compaction density. and each layer of new fill shall terminate in such a bench. After each layer has been properly spread. when compacted in the embankment. and shall continue. to assure free drainage toward the slopes. either at the place of excavation or on the embankments. following which the layer shall be compacted to the required density before the next layer is placed thereon. In the movement of trucks. including size of strip. The slope of any existing fill. as well as to assure a reasonably smooth riding surface for equipment. O. or the slope of the natural ground. The moisture content shall be uniform throughout the layer. as required. P. Prior to and during the compacting operations. it shall be sprinkled or wetted. The compacting operation shall commence immediately after the layer has been brought to the uniform moisture content required. the Contractor will be required to perform such operations as are considered necessary by the Engineer.

Under ordinary conditions. roots. Unless otherwise indicated. an in-place field density test shall be made for each 750 cubic meters of material placed. Sampling and testing shall be more frequent when soil types are changing frequently and for each 250 cubic meters at the start of embankment work. Whenever a trench is to pass through an embankment. provided the result is uniform and equivalent to hand work. the Contractor in a manner acceptable to the Engineer. Exposed subgrades shall be tested at a frequency of one in-place field density test for each 3750 square meters of exposed subgrade in accordance with sec 01400 QUALITY CONTROL.3 FINAL GRADING A. slopes shall not be steeper than 3 horizontal to 1 vertical units. stumps. shall be available for inspection at any time by the Engineer. Q. Use of tracked power equipment will be permitted for final grading and dressing of slopes on fills and embankments. For area fills and embankments. weeds. the Contractor shall arrange for each driver employed for the disposal of excavated materials to be given written instructions as to the acceptable place where each load is to be tipped. a slope of at least one percent shall be provided. Removal and disposal of this material shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.
