The following steps need to be completed in order to be considered for enrollment in the WIOA training programs listed below.
1. Attend a Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act orientation at your local America’s Job Center of California. Call 325-4473, 336-6700
or 800-334-6670 for more information.
2 Once you attend an orientation, you will be given an appointment with an intake counselor who will assess whether or not you
qualify for free training. They may ask you to provide proof of residence in Kern County, income verification for the last 6
months, Social Security card, picture identification, birth certificate, and any other document they ask you to bring.
3. A JCE staff member will assess you for suitability to the program you desire to attend. They may also ask you to attend a series
of workshops to ensure that you can be dependable, arrive on time, be dressed appropriately, and be ready to learn and work.
4. If you are selected for the program, you may be drug tested to ensure that you are drug-free and ready to work.
6. Finally, you will be given a referral to the Bakersfield Adult School or Career Resource Department and training will begin!

ESL BEGINNING — This course is for students who cannot read or write in either their native language or in English.
ESL BEGINNING LOW — This course is for students who are literate in their native language, but speak, read, write and understand little or no
English.
ESL BEGINNING HIGH — This course is designed for students who have limited abilities to communicate their needs by using simple phrases and sentences.
ESL INTERMEDIATE LOW — This course is designed to strengthen communication skills for work or social settings, and to enable students to comfortably participate
in community activities.
ESL INTERMEDIATE HIGH — This course is designed to teach students to follow written directions, comprehend conversations containing unfamiliar vocabulary,
participate in face-to-face conversations, and make themselves understood.
ESL ADVANCED HIGH — This course is designed to improve Career Readiness skills and conversational abilities. Students will increase vocabulary, improve test
taking strategies and generate individual speaking/conversational opportunities based on each lesson.
ESL MULTI-LEVEL LOW — This is a multi-level course designed for ESL students in Beginning Literacy, Beginning Low, and Beginning High levels. The purpose
is to introduce English language literacy skills and language learning strategies within the context of broad life skills and parenting/tutoring strategies.
ESL BEGINNING LOW LISTENING/SPEAKING — This course is designed to provide students additional experience in developing listening, speaking, and
pronunciation skills. Pronunciation and speaking units are tied to life skills topics such as: parts of the body, the post office, food, tools, a coffee shop, a kitchen,
riding the bus, etc.
ESL INT/LOW LISTENING/SPEAKING — This course is designed to build upon the foundation of basic oral skills & developing oral skills that are more
sophisticated. Pronunciation and speaking units are tied to life skills topics such as: health, food, community, work, leisure, etc.
ESL INT. HIGH/WRITING LEVEL 4 — This course is designed to provide students with skills in writing academic paragraphs that will prepare them to study for
their GED or High School Diploma. In addition, they will learn to write letters that will help them in their family and work lives.
ESL ADVANCED LOW/NARRATIVE WRITING LEVEL 5 — This course is designed to provide students with skills in writing academic essays that will prepare them
for the workplace, and to study for their GED or High School Diploma.

Bakersfield Adult School provides adult students the opportunity to complete their
High School Diploma requirements. Students will meet with a counselor or academic
advisor to create an educational plan to attain their goal of graduation.
1. At age 18, a student can earn credit by taking classes which are offered either day
or night.
2. At age 19, a student can be enrolled in an Independent Study program.
Independent Study is designed for those who are unable to enroll in classes due to
employment, health problems, or family obligations.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of homework and meet
with a teacher at a scheduled appointment each week.
Online Independent Study: Daily 9-3 pm and Tuesday & Wednesday 4-7 pm.
Traditional Independent Study is offered at the Main Campus and at F Street
Campus, from 8:00am to 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.

ECONOMICS — This course will study economics and its importance to students
as present and/or future employees, employers, consumers, savers, innovators,
and citizens. Students will study comparative markets systems, understand the
role of government in our economy, identify the role of consumers and
producers and examine the theory of supply and demand as it models macro
and micro-economics phenomena. In addition this course will introduce
positive economic behaviors as they relate to individuals and the nation as a

WORLD HISTORY I/II — The course in World History offers an in-depth study of
history, geography, and cultures of selected civilizations chosen from the

to become knowledgeable about historical events as they relate to their

ACCOUNTING II — Includes journalizing purchases and cash payments, sales and cash receipts, posting to ledgers, business transactions, work sheets,
financial statements, partnerships, closing entries and fiscal period work.
ACCOUNTING III — Includes special journals, payroll records, payroll accounting, taxes, business transactions, uncollected accounts receivable,
depreciation, notes, interest, accrued items, voucher, petty cash and inventory systems.
BASIC BUSINESS SKILLS — Students will obtain knowledge in comparing/proofreading, hand printing, handwriting, spelling, word meanings, completing
business forms, calculation, filing referencing and telephoning.
FILING — Teaches alphabetic, geographic, subject and numeric filing rules. Emphasis is placed on the process of arranging and storing materials in an
orderly manner.
JOB READINESS/SKILLS FOR SUCCESS — This class will assist the student in overcoming barriers to employment by active “hands on” activities. Job
applications, résumés, “job seeker’ cards and portfolios are some of the exciting class activities students will complete.
KEYBOARDING I — Teaches touch typing, margins, tabs, typewriting rules, letters and envelopes. Includes typing certification.
KEYBOARDING II — Includes typing straight copy material with speed and accuracy, , and typing certification.
MACHINE CALCULATION — Teaches the use of the calculator by learning the 10-key touch method, computing business math problems (interest,
discounts, sales slips, etc.). Verifying accuracy and proofreading/editing business documents. Includes ten key certification.
QUICKBOOKS — Information Support and Services/QUICKBOOKS is a course in computer accounting. It is offered for students who have some experience
with computers and accounting principals. It will provide the learner with the knowledge, skills, and background necessary to understand and use the
QuickBooks program to assist in running the accounting end of a business. Students exiting this course have obtained skills needed in the workforce with
reference to employment in the accounting or office field.
RECORD KEEPING I, II — Students will become acquainted with common types of business forms and activities by completing job simulations for six different
types of businesses including direct sales, apartment management, restaurant, retail store, distribution center and independent market. Record Keeping I -
Students will complete the job simulations. Record Keeping II - Students will complete the second three job simulations.
SIMULATED OFFICE DEVELOPMENT —Opened to students interested in a business career who have met the prerequisites of the class. Students will gain
on the job training and experience in a business office environment. Students will carry out oral and written directions effectively, maintain effective work
relationships, and work in a team environment.

COMPUTER EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP/ILLUSTRATOR — Information Support and Services/Adobe Photoshop/Adobe Illustrator is an industry standard vector
graphics software. It is offered for those students who wish to gain or improve proficiency in digital, graphic design. It will provide the
learner with advanced knowledge, skills, and the background necessary to create digital graphics, illustrations, and typography for all kinds
of media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile. Students exiting this program will have obtained entry-level job skills for the current
workplace settings.
INTRO TO COMPUTERS — Students will utilize the Windows 7 operating system in order to learn to understand basic computer vocabulary
terms, open applications, save files, print files, shut down computer, work with windows, files and folders, launch Internet Explorer, navigate
the World-Wide Web and learn to use search engines. Students will gain knowledge in Outlook, create e-mail accounts, communicate using
e-mail, use electronic e-mail, send and receive messages, send attachments, respond to messages and manage contacts. You will also learn
how to work with Tasks and Notes.
MS ACCESS — This course includes an introduction to the fundamentals of data base design.
MS EXCEL — This course is part of the MS Office sequence. The student learns beginning and intermediate spreadsheet techniques and how
to create charts and graphs. It is recommended that the Introduction class be taken as a preparatory course.
MS OFFICE — This course is a professional office program that introduces students to the basic skills of word processing, electronic
spreadsheets, electronic methods of creating advertisements, screen shows and presentations, and electronic databases. It is offered for those
students who wish to gain or improve proficiency with word processing, to obtain employment in record keeping, payroll or accounting, to
gain employment in the advertising industry, to integrate electronic screen shows into their daily work, to gain or improve proficiency with
database programs, and who wish to obtain employment in database analysis. It will provide the learner with basic knowledge, skills, and the
background necessary to write and edit business letters, envelopes, mailing labels, calendars, and flyers, develop and edit business
spreadsheets, design and edit PowerPoint slides, and develop and edit electronic databases.
MS POWERPOINT — The principles of presentation design, creation, and execution are taught in this class. Students create slides, outlines,
speaker notes and audience handouts. Presentations include text, clipart, graphs, tables, charts and animation.

announcements, and cards for all occasions. It is recommended that students take a word processing class prior to enrolling in MS Publisher.
MS WORD — Instruction is given in word processing using MS Word. It is excellent preparation for other software in the MS Office
sequence. It is recommended that the Introduction class be taken as a preparatory course.

CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (Continued)
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY for the Health Care Professional — This course provides basic structure and function of the human body.
Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance and
electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of anatomy and
physiology and their interrelationships. Prerequisite for BAS VN program.
CULINARY BEGINNING — This course provides an introduction to food service career opportunities and requires mastery of entry-level skills, knowledge,
and professional attitude/etiquette relating to food preparation and service. The course includes instruction in food production, baking, and garde
manager, food safety, nutrition, dining room service and special event planning, career awareness and employability skills, use and care of equipment;
workplace safety; menu planning; storeroom/inventory procedures; POS system; facility maintenance; and food service management.
CULINARY ADVANCED — This course will expand on the understanding and application of the principles, techniques, and standards related to food
production. Pre-requisite for course enrollment: successful completion of the Beginning Culinary Art Program.
HEALTH CARE SUPPORT OCCUPATIONS — This course is designed for students to address the knowledge and skills required for employment in
health care occupations. The course will meet necessary proficiencies to work safely and competently within direct patient contact occupations. These are
primarily contained in the classroom and learning laboratories. The course utilizes classroom instruction and community-based learning experiences for
students to acquire job-entry occupation skills in our health care delivery system.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST — This course helps students understand technical concepts underlying current and future developments
in the information technology field. There will be a special emphasis on networks (wired and wireless) and telecommunications. Students will gain some
hands on exposure to powerful, high-level tools for making computer networks, phones and audio visual systems perform. Information Technology
Specialist (ITS) is an academic discipline that continues to evolve as computer and communication technologies change. Students will learn various
techniques involving computer networking, audio/visual systems, telecommunications, conflict management, project management and blueprint/CAD
review and design.
NETWORK CABLING — This course will apply and expand key concepts needed to analyze customers’ organizational needs, blue prints reviews,
and application of audio/video cabling. Pre-requisite for course enrollment: successful completion of Info Tech Specialist Class.
MEDICAL ASSISTANT — Students learn medical law, ethics, medical terminology, sterilization and how to assist with physical exams and office
surgeries. Trainees practice skills to perform an electrocardiogram, take vital signs, and learn CPR, venipuncture, drug calculations and
medication administration as well as communication and job development skills. Students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and
supervised clinical site training.
MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING (Computerized) — This course offers the opportunity to learn skills in bookkeeping and office procedures, billing
and collecting, coding of diagnoses and procedures, computerized electronic claim processing, scheduling computerized appointments, tracing delinquent
claims, introduction to hospital billing, health insurance plans, along with medical terminology.
NURSE ASSISTANT — Students benefit from a balanced blend of classroom and supervised clinical site training at local convalescent homes and
hospitals. Students learn basic patient care skills, vital signs, universal precautions, lifting and moving techniques, as well as, proper body mechanics and
safety. Each student will complete CPR and first aid training and will learn medical ethics, confidentiality, patient rights, and medical and surgical asepsis
patient care procedures. All trainees receive “Skills for Success” instruction throughout the training period to enhance employment potential. Upon
successful completion, the graduate may apply for state licensure and take the California State Exam.
PHLEBOTOMY/CPT1—This course prepares the student for employment as a phlebotomist (CPT1) in clinics, hospitals and commercial
laboratories, medical offices and blood banks. Course also focuses on specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis will be
placed on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, specimen handling, processing, professionalism, ethics and medical
terminology. Successful completion of this course will qualify the student to comply with the requirements of the California Department of
Health Services for Phlebotomy certification.
VOCATIONAL NURSE — Adult students who are current CNAs or CMAs and who have completed the VN prerequisites, may apply for this
program. Students will be involved in classroom study of medical theory, skills, and techniques and supervised practice at local clinical and
hospital sites. After completing the VN program, successful graduates will be able to take the national examination (NCLEX) to become Licensed
Vocational Nurses (LVNs). BAS provides the ability for Bakersfield and Kern County to “grow our own” nurses to help alleviate our communities’
critical nursing shortage.
Programs for older adults are designed to offer lifelong education that will provide opportunities for personal growth and
development, community involvement, survival skills needed for self-maintenance, and economic self-sufficiency.
