Mixture Formal Lab Write-Up
Purpose- To effectively seperate substances within a heterogeneous mixture, with the loss of minimal mass. Materials -funnel -filter paper -distilled H20 in squeeze bottle -magnet shaft -beaker -stirring rod -Bunsen burner -ring stand -tweezers -balance -tray -dixie cup Procedure 1. Put on safety glasses and heed teachers warnings. 2. Receive materials from the all-powerful Voketitis. 3. Weigh beaker. 4. Weigh and record mass of plastic tray. 5. Dump mixture into plastic tray. 6. Weigh and record mass of dixie cup. 7. Weigh mixture and plastic tray, record total mass. Subtract mass of tray from total mass. That gives you the total mass of the mixture. 8. Obtain rocks from mixture via tweezers designated prior to removal. 9. Weigh rocks and record mass. 10. Use designated magnet SHAFT to remove iron filings from mixture and place filings in dixie cup. 11. Weigh dixie cup filled with iron filings, and record. Subtract mass of dixie cup from the total value and that gives you the mass of the iron filings. 12. Weigh and record mass of filter paper. 13. Fold filter paper in half twice and place in funnel, having the paper have 2 folds on one side and 1 fold on the other. 14. Place funnel in ring stand and place beaker underneath. Then lower the ringstand so that the tip of the funnel is about an inch down into the beaker to reduce spillage. 15. Wet filter paper with a bit of distilled water. 16. Transfer take iron filings out of dixie cup and dump mixture into it.

17. INCANTATION: “One Ring to rule them all. Boil the salt water solution until all water is evaporated and salt is behind. Pour mixture into funnel and use distilled water to wash mixture remaining in the cup into the funnel. 22. Allow the mixture to filter and after all water is gone take the filter paper out and place it in dixie cup to dry and leave behind sand. 18. Divide your mass by actual total. Then subtract the mass of the beaker from total amount and that gives you the mass of the salt. Add mass of sand. Then subtract the mass of the filter paper from the total amount and that gives you the mass of the sand. rocks. salt. Weigh and record total mass of beaker with salt. 19. iron. the multiply by 100 and that gives you the percent of error. then recite incantations. 23. One Ring to find them. 24. Tell teacher the total mass you came up with. 21. And that gives you the total mass of the mixtures. 20. One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them” . Pour distilled water into dixie cup and use stirring rod to mix the two for about 2 minutes. Weigh and record total mass of filter paper with sand.
