1 PAUL R. SMITH was born at St. Paul, Minn., in 1934. He died at the Veterans’ Hospital in
Leavenworth, Kansas, on 1 February1983. Paul was educated at Cretin High, St. Paul; St.
Columban’s College, Milton [1952-54]; and St. Columban’s Major Seminary, Milton [1954-61].
He was ordained priest in 1960, appointed to the Philippines in 1961 and remained there until
he joined the US Army Chaplains’ Corps in 1968. On his retirement from the army in 1971 he was to
return to the Philippines but while doing a refresher course in the language he became ill. He returned to
the U.S. and worked in the diocese of Tucson [1977-82]. Paul was buried in the National Cemetery, Ft.
Snelling, Minn., with full military honours.

1 VINCENT J. WALSH was born in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo on 25 March 1920, and died in Our
Lady’s Hospital, Navan on 1, February 2012. He was educated in St Louis Convent,
Newtownbrown NS, at St Nathy’s Collage, Ballaghadereen, came to Dalgan in 1937, was
ordained priest on 21 December 1943. As the war prevented travel to the missions, Vincent
served in Tullow, Co. Carlow until 1946, when he went to China and worked in Hanyang until the political
situation deteriorated. He was appointed to the US and over the next twenty years, from 1948, served on
the staff of various Columban colleges and in Silver Creek, Milton, MA and in Whitby, England. In 1968 he
was appointed to the staff in Dalgan, initially as librarian and later as Spiritual Director. From 1980
to1988 he was superior of the Dalgan Priests Home, after which he became chaplain to St Francis Medical
Center, Ballinderry, Mullingar, before retiring to Dalgan. He struggled with indifferent health for many
years, but was patient and uncomplaining. Vincent is buried at Dalgan.

2 THOMAS FOY was born in Brosna, Co. Kerry, in 1909. He died on 2 February 1973 at St.
Joseph’s Home, Northcote, Melbourne, where he had been a patient for two years. Tom
received his secondary education at St. Mary’s College, Galway, before coming to Dalgan in
1928. He was ordained priest in 1934. The following year he went to China where he worked in
the diocese of Nancheng, spending much of his time in seminary work. He returned to Ireland in ill health
after World War II. In 1949 he was appointed to Australia where he taught in the Columban seminary at
Essendon. From 1961 until his retirement in 1970 he did pastoral work in the archdiocese of Melbourne.
Tom is buried at Carlton, Melbourne.

2 Patrick O’Donovan, popularly known as Pato, was born in Cork City in 1927. He died at
Dalgan Park on 2 February 2009. Having completed his secondary education at Mount Melleray
he came to Dalgan in 1946 where he was ordained in 1952. Assigned to the Philippines in
1953, Pato spent the next 41 years in Pangasinan, apart from a 6-year period [1978-’84] when
he served as District Superior of Luzon, residing at Singalong, Manila. In 1994 Pato was assigned to
Ireland for treatment of a skin condition. Even then, his total commitment to priesthood was evident when
he continued his engagement in pastoral work in the Cork Diocese. With a deep spirituality and blessed by
commonsense and a sense of humour, Pato attracted many who sought advice and assistance. His adoring
family would vouch for that. His many friends in the Philippines and Ireland will miss his gentle presence.
Pato is buried at Dalgan.
PATRICK O'DONOVAN, popularmente conocido como Pato, nació en Cork City en 1927. Murió en el

4 LEO DONNELLY was born in Ballarat in 1932. From St. Patrick’s College, Ballarat, he
went to St. Columban’s, Wahroonga and was ordained in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Ballarat on 21
July 1957. He was appointed to Lima in 1958. His first assignment was in what is now the
Parish of the Holy Archangels, after which he served in eight other parishes. He wrote poetry,
painted, gardened, produced theological articles, and was always prepared to stand up for the poor. In
1969-70 he replaced a sick friend in Tamshiyacu near Iquitos. From 1974 to 1980 he was regional
director. Hunger strikers occupied St. Martin de Porres in 1978 and Leo, the pastor, refused the police
access. He became pastor of Huasahuasi in the mountains in 1990. The Sendero Luminoso killed Sr. Irene
McCormack and four men there in 1991 narrowly missing Leo. He remained in the parish until 1999 when
he moved to the centre house in Sol de Oro. He died among the poor in a state-run hospital on 4 February
2014 and was buried from Holy Archangels, the parish where he began.

5 WALTER NUGENT was born at Clonmellon, Co. Westmeath, in 1933. He died on 5 February
2008 at the Nursing Home, Dalgan, Navan. When he had completed his secondary education at
the Christian Brothers School in Kells, Co. Meath, he came to Dalgan and was ordained there in
December 1957. Assigned to war-torn Korea, Wally was to spend nearly forty years in the
Diocese of Chunchon, close to the border dividing North and South Korea. His relaxed personality
equipped him ideally for that tense situation. However, the bleakness and loneliness of the locations in
which he served must have contributed to his ill health. He retired to Ireland in 1995. On the occasion of
Wally’s Golden Jubilee in 2007, the Superior General wrote “The last number of years have been difficult
for you. Thank you for your example to us all for the dignified manner in which you are bearing your
illness.” Wally is buried at Dalgan.

5 Oliver Whyte was born in Barnaderg, Tuam, in 1921. He died on 5 February 2009 at Dalgan
Park. Having completed his secondary education at St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, he came to
Dalgan in 1940 and was ordained there in 1946. He was appointed to Shanghai to study Korean
but by 1948 he was working in Huzhou, China. But there was yet another twist in Oliver’s
story! Due to Church persecution in China in the early 1950’s, Oliver was assigned to Mindanao,
Philippines, where he spent over 30 years. Appointed to Ireland in 1983, he served as College Bursar in
Dalgan, followed by many years of Mission Promotion and Vocation work. Being a skilled raconteur, Oliver
would have excelled in those roles! He retired in 1996 but continued to travel and entertain! Oliver is
buried at Dalgan.

6 SEAN RUSSELL was born in 1939 at Nobber, Co. Meath. He died on 6 February 1997 at the
home of his sister, Róisín, in Ardee, Co. Louth, from a tumour in his kidney. Some months
before his death he had returned to Ireland, terminally ill. When Sean had completed his
secondary education in St. Finian’s College, Mullingar [1952-57], he entered Dalgan and was
ordained priest there on 22 December 1963. Appointed to Korea in 1964, he spent most of his missionary
life in the archdiocese of Kwangju and in Cheju. Sean is buried at Dalgan.
SEAN RUSSELL nació en 1939 en Nobber, Co. Meath. Sean Murió el 6 de febrero de 1997 en casa de Róisín,

9 CORNELIUS BOYLE Born in 1918 at Bayonne, Newark, NJ, U.S.A, died on 9 February 2006
at Navan Hospital after a brief illness. In the early 1920s his family returned to Ireland and
lived at Dungloe, Co. Donegal, where Neil received his early education. Having completed his
secondary education at St. Eunan’s, Letterkenny, Neil came to Dalgan in 1937, was ordained in
1943. Due to wartime travel restrictions, he worked in the diocese of Nottingham until 1946
when he went to Shanghai and studied Korean. After a brief period in Chunchon, Neil became Regional
Bursar in Korea and in 1962 was appointed Regional Director. Appointed Bursar General [1971-‘83] he
was assigned to the Irish Region and worked in the diocese of Raphoe. “A great example of a dedicated
and faithful priest throughout his life,” Neil is buried at Dalgan.
CORNELIUS BOYLE nació en 1918 en Bayonne, Newark, NJ, USA, murió el 9 de febrero del 2006 en el Hospital

9 PATRICK DAWSON was born at Ramelton, Co. Donegal, in 1905. He died at St. Columbans,
Nebraska, on 9 Feburary 1989. Educated at the Presentation Brothers and St. Eunan’s College,
Letterkenny, Paddy entered St. Senan’s, Cahiracon, in 1926 and was ordained priest at Dalgan
in 1932. He was one of the first group to go to Korea in 1933. He was jailed by the Japanese
during the War [1940-45] and returned to Ireland on his release. He was a delegate to the 1947
Chapter and returned to Cheju in 1948. Having worked in different Columban areas he left Korea in 1970
to take up an assignment at the General Mission Office, Omaha. Paddy is buried at Holy Sepulchre
Cemetery, Omaha.

9 JOHN V. DUNNE was born at Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath in September 1915. He died on 9
February 2002 at Dalgan. Having completed his secondary studies at St. Finian’s College,
Mullingar John came to Dalgan and was ordained in December 1940. It was wartime so he was
assigned to parish work in the diocese of Clifton, England until the war ended. Appointed to
Hanyang in 1946 he was forced to leave in 1949 due to the Communist take-over and went to
the Philippines. There he worked with Student Catholic Action until failing eyesight forced him to leave in
1964 when he went to the U.S. and became actively involved in retreat and parish mission work. John
returned to Ireland in 1989 and to retirement in Dalgan, where he died. He is buried at Dalgan.
9 JOHN V. DUNNE nació en Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath en septiembre de 1915. Murió el 9 de febrero de

9 RAYMOND KARIER was born in 1927 in Chicago. He died suddenly of a heart attack on 9
February 1997 in University Hospital, Gainesville, FL. Ray came to St. Columban’s, Bristol, in
1946 after studying in Quigley Preparatory Seminary, Chicago, and was ordained in Omaha,
on 20 December 1952. He worked in Silver Creek after ordination and in 1957 was appointed
dean of the college in Milton. He then went to Oconomowoc [1963-68]; Westminster Parish [1978]; Virgin
Islands and Kansas Archdiocese. He retired to Florida in 1992. Ray is buried at St. Joseph’s, River Grove, IL.
9 RAYMOND KARIER nació en 1927 en Chicago. Murió repentinamente de un ataque al corazón el 9 de

9 MICHAEL McSHANE was born in 1921 at Bogagh, Carrick, Co. Donegal. He died on 9
February 1997 in Blanchardstown- Hospital, Dublin. He had retired to Dalgan in ill health five
years earlier. Having completed his secondary education in St. Eunan’s College [1937-42],
Mick went to All Hallows College, Dublin [1942-45], to study for priesthood in the archdiocese
of Dublin. He came to Dalgan in 1945 and was ordained priest there on 21 December 1949.
Appointed to the Philippines, he worked in Negros for more than forty years until ill health led to his
retirement in 1992. Mick is buried at Dalgan.

10 PETER FALLON was born at Dunmore, Co. Galway, in 1895. He was one of five
Columbans killed in the Philippines during World War II. The date of Peter’s death is given as
10 February 1945. Peter studied philosophy at All Hallows College, Dublin. He came to Dalgan
in 1918 and was ordained priest in 1922. In 1923 he left for China. Writing from Sungho,
Hanyang in 1929 he requested to leave China because of the “religious indifference which is
everywhere apparent”. In 1930 he left China and went to work in the diocese of Birmingham, England. 3
years later he requested an assignment to the Philippines. He was killed, presumably by Japanese troops,
on 10 February 1945, with Frs. Henaghan, Monaghan and Kelly. Their bodies were never found.

10 JOHN HENAGHAN Born at Louisburg, Co. Mayo, in 1881. He was one of five Columbans
killed in February 1945 during the U.S. - Japanese battle for Manila. Japanese Navy personnel
surrounded Malate church & convent and took every male they found on the premises [20 in
all] with Frs. Kelly, Fallon and Monaghan. The four were never seen alive again. John received
his secondary education at St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam and then went to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, to
study for priesthood in the Tuam archdiocese. Ordained in 1909, he was a curate in Annaghdown and in
Tuam. He joined the Society at its foundation in October 1916. At first he did promotion work and then
occupied the posts of dean in Dalgan and editor of THE FAR EAST concurrently. He was also a member of
the Superior General’s Council [1919-24]. In 1931 he went to the Philippines when he was 49 years of age.
At the time of his death he was Superior in the Philippines. In 1948 the US government posthumously
awarded him the Medal of Freedom. The citation with the award read: “He secretly gave aid and
sustenance, material and spiritual, to the American and Allied internees”. His place of burial is unknown.
JOHN HENAGHAN nació en Louisburg, Co. Mayo, en 1881. Fue uno de los cinco Columbanos asesinados en

10 PATRICK KELLY Born at Tullamore, Co. Offaly, in 1891. He was parish priest in Malate,
Manila, when, in February 1945 he was taken away by Japanese Navy personnel along with Frs.
Henaghan, Monaghan and Fallon. The four were never seen alive again. He did his secondary
education at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar. He was ordained priest at Kilbeggan in June 1915
for the diocese of Meath and served as a curate in the parish of Dunboyne until 1921 when he
joined the Society. For a short time he did promotion work in Ireland and then went to Australia in 1922,
again for promotion work. In 1925 he was appointed to Ireland as Spiritual Director to the Columban
Brothers. Assigned to the Philippines in 1929, he was the first Columban Superior in that mission. In 1948
the U.S. government posthumously awarded him the Medal of Freedom for his services to U.S. internees
and prisoners of war. The accompanying citation said: “He gave food, shelter, medicine and money to all in
need and helped escaped prisoners”. The exact date of his death and place of burial are uncertain.

10 JOSEPH MONAGHAN was born at Banbridge, Co. Down, in 1907. He was one of five
Columbans killed in Manila in February 1945. He was attached to Malate parish, the convento
of which was at that time the Centre House for Columbans in the Philippines. With other
Columbans, Joe was engaged in humanitarian work for American civilian internees and
prisoners of war interned in the area. Japanese Navy personnel surrounded Malate church and
convento and took every male they found on the premises [20 in all] along with four priests - John
Henaghan, Pat Kelly, Peter Fallon and Joe. The four were never seen alive again. Their bodies were never
recovered. Joe received his secondary education at St. Colman’s College, Newry. Having completed his
philosophy studies at Dalgan he studied theology at St. Columban’s, Nebraska, where he was ordained
priest in 1931. He went to the Philippines in 1932. Joe was an uncle of Columbans Damien McKenna and
Brendan McPolin.

10 CHARLES G. O’MAHONY was born in Kyabram, Victoria, on 20 November 1918.

His father was a school principal. Ann, his mother, died in 1923. The family, three boys and a
girl, moved to Geelong. Charlie worked four years in the Public Taxation Department until one
day he found himself thinking, ‘Why not become a priest?’ He joined the Columbans, did
spiritual year and philosophy at Essendon 1938-1941 and theology in Omaha. Cardinal
Cushing ordained him on 21st December 1944. He taught in Essendon before going to Rome. In 1951 he
was one of the first group in Fiji, but was recalled to the theologate in Wahroonga. Having helped plan the
seminary at Turramurra, with his brother Tom as architect, Charlie became the first rector. From 1961 he
served as Regional Bursar, Vocation Director, Office Manager, and Regional Director. Rector of the Rome
house in 1980-6 he proved a great host. He became bursar in Turramurra from 1987. In 1994, aged 76, he
returned to Fiji to manage the Suva house. Even after retiring to Essendon in 2007 he kept alert, with
crosswords, telling stories, and reciting the poems of C. J. Dennis and Banjo Patterson. Charlie was a great
Aussie and a proud Columban. He died on February 10, 2013.

11 KENNETH A. KOSTER was born at Buffalo, NY, in 1925. While at home on compassionate
leave he died unexpectedly on 11 February 1981. Ken was ordained priest in 1950 having
studied at St. Columban’s, Silver Creek [1938-44], St. Columban’s, Bristol [1944-45] and St.
Columban’s, Nebraska [1945-51]. He went to the Philippines in 1951. From 1959-63 he did
promotion work in the U.S. He was reappointed to the Philippines in 1963. In 1969 he
returned to the U.S. for a year’s studies. Ken is buried at Silver Creek, NY.

11 MARTIN NOONE was born at Glencorrib, Shrule, Co. Mayo, in 1913. He died in Our Lady’s
Hospital, Navan, on 11 February 1998. It seemed natural that if he studied for priesthood it
would be at the nearby Old Dalgan, which he did in 1931 having completed his secondary
studies at St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam. He was ordained priest on 21 December 1937 and
assigned to the Philippines. In December 1938 he was one of ten Columbans who took charge
of Ozamis area in Mindanao. In 1947 he did promotion work in the U.S. and returned to Mindanao in 1951.
Assigned to promotion work in Ireland in 1959 he worked there for three years and again returned to
Mindanao. Back to Ireland in 1978, Martin became manager of THE FAR EAST Office. From the early ‘80s
he devoted most of his time to researching and writing, which resulted in The Islands Saw It and Michael
O’Doherty, Archbishop of Manila. Martin is buried at Dalgan.

12 NICHOLAS CODY Born at Templemore, Co. Tipperary, in 1894. He died at Our Lady of
Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, on 12 February 1975. Nicholas did his secondary studies at Mt. St.
Joseph College, Roscrea. He worked in his family’s timber business for ten years before
entering St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1921. Ordained priest at Dalgan in December 1925,
he did promotion work in Ireland [25-29]. In 1929 he went to China and for the next nineteen
years was stationed at St. Columban’s Procure, Shanghai, as bursar. In this post he was responsible for the
material welfare of all Columban missions in China. He was also for most of this time deputy Superior of
the Columbans in China. This included the period of the Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Nicholas
came to Ireland in 1948 and as he was unable to return to China because of the Communist takeover he
took up parish work in Australia. He retired to Ireland in 1971 and is buried at Dalgan.

13 PATRICK J. FARRELL was born in 1922 at Loughrea, Co. Galway. He died in Dalgan on 13
February 2004, having retired there the previous year. On completion of his secondary
education in St. Mary’s College, Galway, Pat went to Dalgan in 1940, was ordained in 1946 and
appointed to the Philippines where he spent the next fifty-six years. A perfectionist in
everything he undertook, Pat spoke the local dialect with great fluency, enriched the liturgy
with his special talents and applied his construction skills to a number of church buildings in Ozamis,
despite indifferent health over a long period. Pat is buried at Dalgan.

13 P. JOSEPH KENNEDY Born in 1918 at Loughrea, Co. Galway, died on 13 February 1997 in
Dalgan. Joe came to Dalgan in 1936 from St. Joseph’s College, Garbally Park, Ballinasloe. He was
ordained priest on 21 December 42 and then obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law at Dunboyne,
Maynooth [1943-45]. Appointed to China, he worked in Huzhou until he was expelled in 1952.
He went to Japan in 1953, becoming Superior in Chiba in 1958 and vice-Director in 1960, and a
Chapter delegate in 1962. He was in charge of St. Columban’s, Ovington Sq., London, and the Migrant
Chaplains programme [1963-66]. In 1966 he went to Peru where he was Regional Bursar and later [1970]
vice-Director. Poor health forced him to retire to Dalgan in 1989, where he is buried.

13 MICHAEL O’DWYER, Superior General of the Society of St. Columban [1924-47], was
born at Holycross, Co. Tipperary, in 1887. He died at St. Columban’s, Dowdstown House,
Navan, on 13 February 1975. Having studied at St. Patrick’s College, Thurles [1902-05],
Michael went to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1905 to study for priesthood in the
archdiocese of Cashel. After his ordination in 1912 he did post-graduate studies at Maynooth
and received his Doctor of Divinity in 1915. During his seminary days he won an All-Ireland hurling medal
with Tipperary [1908] and was selected to play exhibition games in Belgium [1910]. He was appointed to
the teaching staff at St. Patrick’s College, Thurles, in 1915. In 1920 he joined the Society and was
appointed rector at St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon. He was elected Superior General in 1924, a position he
held until 1947. He was elected Vicar General at the 1947 Chapter and appointed Regional Director in
Ireland. In 1951 he had to assume again the duties of Superior General when Jeremiah Dennehy died.
Michael is buried at Dalgan.

13 JOHN LALOR was born in Cork city in 1897. He was one of five Columbans killed in the
Philippines in February 1945. John was educated at Mungret College, Limerick, where he
completed his philosophy before joining the Society in 1921. He was ordained priest at Dalgan
in 1924 and assigned to Hanyang, China. After a period in captivity by Chinese bandits in 1928
he was assigned to the Philippines [1930]. John was attached to Malate parish and during the
battle for Manila [1945] he worked under an assumed name, dressed as a doctor, in the Malate school
which had been converted into a hospital. He was killed along with many helpers when a shell exploded in
their air-raid shelter. Like his colleagues, Frs. Henaghan and Kelly, Fr. Lalor was posthumously awarded
the Medal of Freedom by the United States government in 1948. His citation said: “He was an important
link in the underground that supplied food, medicine, clothing and messages to prisoners of war and
internees”. John is buried where he died.

Columban’s, [Dowdstown House], Navan, on 14 February 1967. E.J. received his secondary
education at St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny. He was ordained priest at Maynooth in 1903 for
the diocese of Raphoe, where he served before joining the Columbans in 1919. In 1920 he went
to Hanyang with our first group of missionaries. In a FAR EAST article [Jan. 1921] he vividly described the
trip from Shanghai down the Yangtse to Hanyang. He remained in Hanyang until 1924 when he was
elected a member of the Superior General’s Council. In 1931 he was appointed to the teaching staff at St.
Columban’s, Nebraska, where he remained until 1939 when ill health forced him to return to Ireland. E.J.
is buried at Dalgan.

14 THOMAS O’GRADY died on 14 February 2002 at the Bon Secours Hospital, Dublin, after
more than a year of bad health. Tom was born at Annacotty, Co. Limerick, in 1930 and later
moved to Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo where he received his early education. After studying at St.
Nathy’s College, Ballaghadereen, he came to Dalgan in 1950, was ordained there in December
1956. For the next forty years he ministered in and near Manila. “A man with a big heart and deep
compassion, Tom was friend and brother to a countless number of people, especially the members of the
Columban family”, was the tribute paid to him by a Columban confrere when news of his death reached
Manila. Tom was a popular District Superior in Luzon for two terms. In 1999 he came to Britain and was
Superior of the London house until illness struck. Tom is buried at Dalgan.

14 JOHN P. O’MEARA Born at Epping, Victoria, Australia, in 1914, died unexpectedly at

Kumamoto, Japan, on 14 February 1974. John moved to Tasmania with his family in 1925 and
was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Launceston. He studied philosophy at St. Columban’s,
Essendon, prior to his going to Dalgan in 1937 to study theology. He was ordained priest at
Dalgan in 1940. In 1942 he joined the Royal Air Force as a chaplain and served for the duration
of the war in Britain and throughout S.E. Asia. In 1947 he was assigned to study Chinese in Shanghai but
was unable to go. He went to Japan in 1949. John is buried at Kumamoto, Japan.

15 JOHN DALY Born at Killanny, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, in 1903, died in Brooks
Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, NY, on 15 February 1988. After his secondary education at St.
Macartan’s College, Monaghan, he entered St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1921 to study for
priesthood. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 26. John served on the staff at St. Columban’s, Silver
Creek [1927-42]. After a short time as Director of Filipino Catholics in Los Angeles he entered the
U.S. Chaplains’ Corps in 1943 and served in the South Pacific. In 1946 he was appointed to St. Columban’s, San
Diego, and in 1950 to promotion in Los Angeles. He was appointed vicar of the St. Paul house in 1964. In 1966
he went to St. Columban’s, Derby, from where he retired to St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, in 1982. John is
buried at Silver Creek, NY.

15 FREDERICK HANSON was born on 8 September 1916 in St. Brigid’s parish, Belfast. He
was ordained in Dalgan Park, Shrule on 21 December 1939. WW II prevented his going to
China so he worked in Down and Connor before becoming a chaplain in the RAF in 1943. Mgr.
H. Beauchamp wrote, “Fr Hanson is a most zealous priest and has done heroic work’. An
assignment to Korea was cut short by the Korean War and he was re-assigned to Japan. From
1953 until 1958 he served as editor of Tosei News and NCWC correspondent for Korea and Japan. From
1958-1964 he was secretary to Bishop Quinlan. Returning to Ireland he served in St. Teresa’s, Glen Rd,
Belfast from 1966-88 through the Troubles. After a spell in Holy Family parish he retired to Dalgan in
2000 and died there on 15 Feb. 2015.

16 FERGUS MURPHY was from St. Kevin’s parish, Harrington Street, Dublin, where he
was born in 1903. He died in Lima, Peru, on 16 February 1951 of a perforated ulcer. Fergus
studied at Belvedere College, Dublin, before going to Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, to study for
priesthood in the archdiocese of Dublin. He came to Dalgan in 1923 and was ordained priest
there in 1926. He studied in Rome and received a Doctorate in Canon Law. Assigned to China in 1929, he
was rector of the junior seminary in Hanyang during the thirties. The outbreak of war in 1939 prevented
him from returning to China. He volunteered as an Army chaplain and served with the British Forces until
1945. Returning to China in 1946 he was elected delegate to the 1947 Chapter. Although in poor health, he
returned to China, was appointed Director in 1949. In 1950 went to USA for medical treatment. That year
he was asked by the Superior General to go on a “reconnaissance” trip to South America with a view to
accepting some new missions. Fergus is buried at Lima.

17 WILLIAM H. HALLIDEN was the oldest of three brothers who joined the Columbans; the
others being Jerome and Donal. Born in 1916 at Banteer, Co. Cork, Bill died at Dalgan on 17
February 2004. Having completed his secondary studies at St. Colman’s College, Fermoy, he
came to the Old Dalgan in 1933, was ordained in 1939. After studying music and elocution at
University College, Dublin, he was professor of Gregorian Chant, French and Church History at Dalgan
until 1963 when he got a long-awaited mission assignment, to Chile. There he lived through the difficult
years of the Pinochet dictatorship and served as Superior and Regional Director. Appointed Procurator
General in Rome in 1978 – a role for which he was admirably equipped - Bill spent the next seventeen
years ‘at home’ with church dignitaries, providing a service to the Society as host and administrator. He
retired to Dalgan in 1995 where he was “a quiet, gentle and affirming presence” and is buried there.

18 THOMAS COMERFORD was born in 1919 at Garnastan, Kells, Co. Kilkenny. He died in
Chun Chon, Korea, on 18 February 2009. Educated at Kells N.S. and by the Christian Brothers in
Callan, Tommy applied to join the Columbans in 1936. His application was supported by the
following letter from the Headmaster in Callan to Fr. John Blowick: “Thomas Commerford is a
very steady, sensible, self-respecting boy. He has learned to attend to his own duties, never interferes with
others. He has none of the boyish tricks, nor does he take part in games. In fact this is the only fault I could
ever find with him. He is intensely pious and religious. I have no hesitation in saying that he is the most
satisfactory boy I have ever met.” These were some of the qualities that were evident in Tommy at the age
of 17. These were some of the qualities that stood to him throughout the 55 arduous, though happy, years
he spent on mission in Korea. Tommy was ordained in Dalgan Park in 1943 and assigned to China. His
next two years were spent in Shanghai preparing for missionary life in Korea, specifically Chun Chon. He
quickly adapted to his adopted country with all its strange customs. He died in his 90th year at St.
Columban’s Clinic, Chun Chon where he was cared for by the Columban Sisters and visited daily by
numerous friends. Tommy is buried at the rear of Chun Chon Cathedral where Bishop Quinlan and a
number of Columbans are laid to rest.

18 HUGH MCGONAGLE arrived in Chile on 11 January 1953, a year after James Loughran,
the founder of the mission. He died on 18 February 2013. Born in Buncrana, Co. Donegal on 23
January 1924, he was the son of Denis McGonagle and Kate Doherty. Having studied in St.
Columb’s College, Derry he entered Dalgan in 1943 and was ordained on 21 December 1949.
Hugh’s happiest years were those in parishes beginning in San Andres. Later he said, ‘The truth is that
together with San Andres and Espíritu Santo in Iquique, Barrancas is one of the great loves of my
missionary journey!’ In 1963, as acting superior, he welcomed the first four associate priests to Chile after
negotiating for parishes with Cardinal Raul Silva Henríquez, who described him as ‘a hard man’. At the age
of 63 he took the Religious Formation Ministry Programme, Carysfort, and for eight years from 1991 he
was a member of the Columban Formation team. His last parish assignment in Puente Alto was
demanding for a 77year old. He confessed, ‘On Sundays after Mass, I head for the Center House. For the
first time in my life, I am glad to be there - for half the week anyway!’

18 MICHAEL NALLON came from Knockmore, Co. Mayo, where he was born in 1942. He
died there on 18 February 2006. Having received his secondary education at S. Murdeach’s
College, Ballina, Mick went to Dalgan in 1961 where be was ordained priest in 1969. His first
and only missionary appointment was Korea where he spent the next thirty-six years in a
number of parishes. Among his Korean people and his fellow-Columbans, Mick enjoyed the reputation of
being a dedicated missionary, skilled in the local dialect, and a faithful friend to those he served in Korea
and to his own family who were privileged to care for him in his final illness. He died on 18 February 2006
and is buried among his own people at Knockmore.

18 WILLIAM A. SHERIDAN was born in 1913 at Drumcondra, Dublin. He died on 18

February 1991 at Dalgan. Bill entered Dalgan in 1931 having received his secondary
education at O’Connell School, North Richmond St., Dublin. He was ordained priest on 21
December 1937. His first appointment was to study Canon Law in Rome [1938-41], then to
teach Canon Law, Theology and Scripture at Glenstal, Co. Limerick [1941-42]. He worked on in
Ireland until 1946 when he went to Huzhou, China. After attending the 1947 Chapter he taught in Omaha
and Silver Creek. For the period 1949-55 he worked in the Brentwood diocese, England. He was a member
of the seminary staff in Dalgan [1955-57]. From 1957-80 he edited PAGAN MISSIONS (later called
ENSIGN). Bill is buried at Dalgan.

19 + PATRICK H. CRONIN was born in 1913 at Moneygall, Dunkerrin, Co. Offaly. He died on
19 February 1991 in Maria Regina Hospital, Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Having studied at
Tullamore Christian Brothers School and at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, Paddy came to
Dalgan in 1931 and was ordained priest in 1937. He was appointed to the Philippines where he
was to remain until his death. In 1955 he became Prelate Ordinary of Ozamis, being consecrated in the
Dalgan Chapel, Navan, on 25 September 1955. He was translated to the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro in
1971 where he laboured until his retirement in 1987. From then until his death he resided within the
grounds of the archdiocesan seminary. Paddy is buried in the Cathedral beside his predecessor, James
Hayes S.J.

21 HUGH BYRNE was born at Innismagrath, Co. Leitrim, in 1916. He died at Glendale
Memorial Hospital, Los Angeles, on 21 February 1989. Hugh studied at Summerhill College,
Sligo, and St. Patrick’s College, Cavan, before entering Dalgan in 1935. Because of a knee injury
his ordination was deferred until March 1942 at Clonliffe College, Dublin. After serving as a
chaplain to the British Forces [1943-46] he went to Hanyang. Two years later he was assigned to
promotion work in the U.S. He was appointed Superior of the Los Angeles house in 1955. From 1964-69
he worked in Milton, MA, and then was assigned to St. Columban’s Filipino Center in Los Angeles. Death
resulted from a serious stroke. Hugh is buried in Calvary Cemetery, L.A.

21 WILLIAM CARNEY was born at Bayonne, NJ, in 1924. He died on 21 February 1973 in
Jersey City, after a series of operations for cancer of the throat. Bill studied at St. Columban’s,
Silver Creek [1942-43], St. Columban’s, Bristol [1943-44], and St. Columban’s Seminary,
Nebraska [1944-50]. He was ordained priest in 1949. His first mission assignment was to Japan
but this was changed because of the big influx of Columbans into Japan due to the Korean War.
He was then appointed to the Philippines. In 1955 he returned to the U.S. for promotion work. He was
appointed Superior of St. Columban’s, San Francisco, in 1964 and in 1969 he became Spiritual Director at
St. Columban’s, Oconomowoc, Minn. Bill is buried at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

22 COLM BRADY was born in Granard, Co. Longford, in 1911. He died in a Manila hospital
on 22 February 1977. Colm received his secondary education at St. Mel’s College, Longford. He
came to Dalgan in 1930 and was ordained priest there in 1936. Appointed to China, he spent
nine years in Hanyang where the difficult war conditions affected his health. He was appointed
to promotion work in the U.S. and worked in the Los Angeles area. In 1953 he began a new missionary
career in the Philippines and worked in Mindanao for the next 23 years. Colm is buried at Manila.

22 DERMOT HURLEY was born in1920 at Kilcrohane, Co. Cork. He died on 22

February 1999 at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Suva, Fiji, following a minor motor
accident. Having completed his secondary education at St. Colman’s College, Fermoy, Dermot
went to Dalgan in 1938 and was ordained priest on 21 December 1944. Due to ill health, he did
not leave Ireland until 1947 when he went to Australia and worked in the parish of Coburg, Melbourne
archdiocese. Dermot went to Fiji in 1952 where, according to Fiji’s Daily Post, “He was more than a priest.
To Fiji he was a leader, a pioneer, a teacher, a social worker, a missionary, a friend of the poor.”
He was founder of HART, whose object was to provide affordable homes for the poor. In 1974 he founded
and was editor of CONTACT, a Catholic newspaper, and published many prayer books and hymn books.
In 1995 he was awarded the Fiji’s 25th Anniversary Independence Medal for his contribution to every
aspect of social activity. Dermot is buried at Suva, Fiji.

23 THOMAS CONVERY was born at Trenton, NJ, in 1915. He died on 23 February 2007 at
Silver Silver Creek Nursing Home, Bristol, RI. Having gone through the Columban seminary
system– Milton, Silver Creek, Omaha – Tom was ordained in 1940 and appointed to teach in
Silver Creek for a year and then did vocation work until 1949. He served as Dean at Milton
while doing studies at Boston College. He received his M.Ed. from Loyola University. In 1951 he
was assigned to the Philippines where he served as superior in Zambales and Vicar General to Bishop
Byrne. He was a delegate to three General Chapters. Appointed to the U.S. in 1972, he was Superior in
Bayside and afterwards in Bristol. He moved to Omaha in 1980 and served there as Superior and Retreat
Master until 1983 when he moved to Edgemont, PA. He ‘retired’ to Bristol in 1994. Known as a man of
great energy, deeply spiritual and totally dedicated, Tom is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, E.
Providence, RI.

23 PATRICK DILLON was born at Cappatagle, Co. Galway, in 1926. He died suddenly on 23
February 1977 at Elmhurst, IL, U.S.A. Paddy studied at St. Joseph’s College, Ballinasloe, and
came to Dalgan in 1944. He was ordained priest in 1950 and studied at Loyola University,
Chicago, for an M.A. in sociology. While awaiting a visa to enter Burma he received medical
advice that it would be unwise to work in a tropical climate. He worked on promotion in the
U.S. for twenty years; in New York up to 1958; Silver Creek, NY [1958-60]; New York again [1960-64];
Chicago [1964-73]. He was Superior of the Chicago Columban house [1967-73]. He did a year’s theological
study at Loyola University, Chicago, after which he worked in Joliet diocese. He was also Newman chaplain
at Elmhurst College, Illinois. Paddy is buried at Dalgan.

23 BRIAN GERAGHTY was born at Ballygar, Co. Galway, in 1908. He died in Galway on 23
February 1974. Brian entered St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1926, having completed his
secondary studies at Summerhill College, Sligo. He was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1932 and
went to Korea in 1933. He was interned by the Japanese during World War II. He was a
delegate to the 1947 Chapter and was Superior of the Columbans in Korea [1949-59]. Shortly
after his taking office the Korean War began, in which seven Columbans lost their lives. After the war he
directed Columban missionary operations during the great expansion of the Korean Church. St. Patrick’s
church in Seoul was built due mainly to his efforts. Altogether he built seven parishes in Korea - the last
two in the 1960’s in Seoul’s booming suburbs. His brother, James, was also a Columban. Both are buried at
Dalgan.

23 + EDWARD J. GALVIN was born at Newcestown, Co. Cork, on St. Columban’s

Day, 23 November 1882. He died of leukemia at Dalgan on 23 February 1956. He was
ordained priest at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1909 for his home diocese of Cork.
He spent his first three years as a priest on loan to the diocese of Brooklyn. While there,
in January 1912, he met Father Fraser who was en route back to China.
In February 1912, Ned Galvin left Brooklyn for China. He went first to Toronto to join Fraser and
together they travelled from Vancouver to Shanghai on the “Empress of India”. He lived and
worked with French Vincentians in Zhejiang [1912-16]. In 1916 he returned to Ireland to found
the Society.
He met John Blowick for the first time on 4 September 1916 at Fr. Tom Ronayne’s lodgings in
Monkstown, Co. Dublin. Permission was obtained on 10 October 1916 from the Irish hierarchy to
establish a “mission house for the training of Irish missionaries for China”. After a brief period
promoting the Society in Ireland, E.J. left (1917) for the U.S. to establish the Society there.
He returned to Ireland to lead the first band of Columbans to China (1920).
From his arrival in China to his expulsion in 1952, E.J. would have experienced some good years
but the lows predominated – the Japanese invasion, a corrupt Chinese government, violence,
banditry often directed against missionaries, local warlords, floods, drought....
He survived the rigours of World War II but there was no let-up.
In 1947 he wrote “the pep has gone from me; the war was bad but post-war problems are the devil
entirely. We have no longer any rights, we have no power, we have no guns, we have no protection,
but God is still in Heaven”. Expelled, he returned to Ireland in 1953 and retired to Dalgan.
He is buried there.

26 PATRICK HYNES was born in 1925 at Tullaroan, Co. Kilkenny. He died at Dalgan on 26
February 2004, having retired there in 1996. He had been in ill health for several years. Having
completed his secondary studies at St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, Pat came to Dalgan in 1943
and was ordained there in 1949. Assigned to the Philippines in 1950 he spent the next forty six
years in a number of parishes in Negros. “Quiet and direct with a droll sense of humour, he was
much loved wherever he served.” Pat is buried at Dalgan.

26 TIMOTHY McKIERNAN Born in Kiltubrid, Co. Leitrim, in 1907, died in Morong church,
Philippines, as a result of an accident on 26 February 1941. Tim’s family emigrated to the U.S.
where he received his early education before going to St. Columban’s, Silver Creek, in 1927. He
was ordained priest at St. Columban’s, Nebraska, in 1939. Assigned to the Philippines, he was
there less than a year when he was tragically killed. He is buried at Malate, Manila.

26 EDWARD McMANUS was born in Ardoyne, Belfast, in 1902. He died at Bristol, RI, on 26
February 1986. After secondary education in St. Malachy’s College, Belfast [1917- 22], he
entered St. Senan’s College, Cahiracon, in 1922 and was ordained priest at Dalgan in 1927. In
1928 he went to China and was assigned to the Columban mission in Nancheng, Jiangxi, where
he served until 1948. In 1949 he was appointed assistant Regional Bursar of the U.S. Region
and became Regional Bursar in 1952, a post he held until 1968 when he was appointed bursar at St.
Columban’s, Bayside, NY. In May 1970 he went as bursar to St. Columban’s, Bristol, where he retired in
1976. He is buried at East Providence, RI.

27 MICHAEL KERRIGAN Born in Moville, Co. Donegal, in 1897. He died at Blanchardstown

Hospital, Dublin, on 27 February 1981. He received his secondary education at St. Columb’s
College, Derry, and came to Dalgan in 1920. After his ordination to priesthood in 1925, he
spent the next four years on promotion work in Ireland. In 1930 he was appointed chaplain to
the Columban Sisters at Cahiracon. The following year he was appointed professor of Sacred Scripture at
Dalgan, a post he held for the next seventeen years. In 1948 he was appointed Spiritual Director to the
student body at Dalgan and remained there until his retirement in 1972. Having spent a year of his
retirement in pastoral work in Raphoe diocese, Michael retired to Dalgan. He is buried at Dalgan.

28 T. ERC BRADY was born on 7 January 1914 at Rathkenny, Co. Meath. Having completed
his secondary education at St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, Erc came to Dalgan in 1932 and was
ordained there in 1939. He joined the British Forces as an Army Chaplain for the duration of
World War 11. His first mission assignment was China in 1946. There, in Shanghai, he studied
Japanese in preparation for a new mission to Japan in 1948. While on vacation in Ireland, Erc
became ill and died on 28 February 1984 at Dalgan and is buried there.

28 JAMES O. HUGHES was born at Wexford in 1920. He died in Nottingham, England, on 28

February 1987. Jim received his secondary education at St. Peter’s College, Wexford, before
entering Dalgan. He was ordained priest in 1944. At the end of World War II he went to
Huzhou, China. He left China in 1952 and went to the Philippines where he worked until 1972.
He returned to the Irish Region and did pastoral work in Ireland and England. His last appointment was as
chaplain to the Home run by the Sisters of Nazareth in Nottingham. He is buried at Dalgan.

28 PAT DONOHOE was born on 20 May 1932 at Derryheen, Cavan. He was ordained on 21
December 1956 and assigned to Korea. After language school in Seoul he served in Mokpo and
Changsong before becoming regional bursar. In 1964 he moved to Cheju and the Saint Isidore
Development Association. He studied economics at Creighton University, Omaha, in 1981.
During seven years as district bursar in Britain he introduced a new budgeting system. Jamaica
in 1990 was a fresh challenge. Back in Ireland he did pastoral work in Clonfert until May 1998 when he
became chaplain to the Columban Sisters in Magheramore. For the next eighteen years the sisters found
him meticulous, a good and faithful priest, who enjoyed people’s foibles while treating them with respect.
They appreciated his well prepared four-minute homilies. He died suddenly on 28 February 2016 and is
buried in Dalgan.

28 OWEN MacPOLIN was born at Hilltown, Co. Down, in 1889. He died at Dalgan on 28
February 1963. Having completed his secondary studies at St. Colman’s College, Newry, Owen
went to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1907 to study for priesthood in the diocese of
Dromore. He was ordained priest in 1913 and did post-graduate studies at Maynooth [1913-
15] gaining a Master of Arts and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. He was a curate at Lurgan
[1915-17] and a chaplain to the British Forces in Europe [1917-19]. He joined the Society in 1919 and was
a member of the first group of Columbans to sail for China in 1920. After four years in Hanyang he was
appointed Bursar General [1924]. Owen returned to China in 1931 and two years later he led the first
group of Columbans to the new mission in Korea. He was appointed Prefect Apostolic in Korea [1937].
During World War II he was placed under house-arrest by the Japanese. He left Korea for vacation in
Ireland in 1948 and for the next twelve years he taught at St. Columban’s, Nebraska, and St. Columban’s,
Milton, MA. He was appointed to the teaching staff at Dalgan in 1960 until his unexpected death of a heart
attack. Owen is buried at Dalgan.

28 CORNELIUS TIERNEY was born in Magheraveeley, Co. Fermanagh, in the parish of

Clones, in 1872. He died from the hardship of captivity while a prisoner of Communist
bandits in Nancheng diocese, China, on 28 February 1931. Corney was educated at St.
Macartan’s College, Monaghan, before going to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1893. He was
ordained priest there in 1899 for Clogher diocese. He taught at St. Macartan’s College,
Monaghan [1899-1911], and was curate in Ballyshannon [1911-17]. In 1918 he joined the Columbans and
was appointed bursar and Spiritual Director at Dalgan until he went to China with the first batch of
Columbans in 1920. He was then 48 and had had an operation for the removal of a kidney. He was in
Hanyang [1920-24] and on promotion in the U.S. [1924-27]. He was Superior of the first group of
Columbans to go to Nancheng in 1928. Corney’s remains were exhumed from where his captors buried
him and reburied at Nancheng.
