. The quarterback steps are designed to position the QB on the last step of his drop just ahead of the receiver's breaks in their routes. The distance he drops will depend on the routes designed and the type of protection being used. QBs will hinge, or throw on rhythm, those routes that seek to take advantage of breaks that create immediate separation in space for receivers. For all intents and purposes, timed routes with drops The QB will reset his feet, hitch, shuffle, gather, etc. for routes that take longer to develop, or require a longer read. The QB rolling out relieves the pressure on protection while giving the QB time to break containment and hit receivers running. They can also have them pull up behind the tackle on time and throw routes timed to break off the half sprint. Each of these concepts is also functional in play action as well. Aside from the Sprint game, all drop footwork is designed for positioning the QB relative to protection, routes, and mechanics timing. Within the QB, it is critical that he be explosive on all steps prior to the final two steps of any drop. For instance, on a 3 step drop, The QB drives deep for 1, and uses the second and third step for deceleration and direction respectively. The second to last step for deceleration, also includes the need to rotate that foot prior to planting (lead with the toe, or heel) in a manner that allows the front shoulder to remain open, or closed depending on which direction the QB will be driving when he plants. He should seek to keep his back straight, hips down to setup his weight transfer, and keep the heels up. Keeping the heels up sustains muscle tension in the legs, which essentially "pre-fires" the kinesthetic chain that begins in the plant leg. If the heel goes to ground on the plant foot either on the hinge, or shuffle, the weight of the QB will drift, and will not transfer effectively to the front foot. Stepping in the left 9 with the front foot is critical to paving the way to solid weight transfer. Stepping on the midline will force the hips to lock, and the weight to "stop" moving forward.
