millions watched Charles and Diana’s
fairy-tale wedding. Their marriage even-
tually ended in divorce – but no one was
dwelling on that detail.
William’s grandmother, Queen Eliza-
beth II, and her husband Prince Philip
“are absolutely delighted for them both,”
Buckingham Palace said. Prince Charles
said he was “absolutely thrilled.”

SIX SOLDIERS ended an eight-week run across
America in an epic journey called The Gumpathon
(after the Oscar-winning film) and finished on No-
vember 11 (Armistice Day/Veteran’s Day) as they
jogged onto Santa Monica Pier in Calfornia.
What makes the accomplishment more out-
standing is that one of the runners is Mark Ormrod,
26, from England, a former Royal Marine who
uses carbon fiber prosthetic legs due to his limbs
being blown off by a Taliban land mine in 2007.
Mark, dubbed “The Bionic Man”, said: “I had to

a bit of uneven ground made me trip up. I just
kept going.”

British Couple Freed By
Somali Pirates Return Home
PAUL AND RACHEL Chandler – the
British couple held hostage by Somali
pirates for 388 days – arrived home in
the UK November 17 following their
release from captivity.
The retired couple appeared pale
and tired as they landed at London’s
Heathrow Airport on a Virgin Atlantic
flight from Kenya.
Both smiled, but did not make any
comment as they dashed from the air-
craft to a waiting car.
The couple have asked for privacy as
they come to terms with their freedom,
and after learning that Paul Chandler’s
father died in late July whilst they were
held in captivity.
Pirates captured the Chandlers in
October 2009 near the island nation of
Seychelles as they sailed the world on
their prized 38-foot-yacht.
British media reported that a ransom
of up to a million dollars was paid to
their kidnappers, partly funded by dona-

Budget Date
TREASURY CHIEF George Osborne
has named March 23 as the date for
the country’s annual budget and has
defended the government’s plans to
slash public spending.
Osborne revealed the date last month
while giving evidence to a Parliamen-
tary committee about the impact of
harsh spending cuts introduced by the
government last month to slash Britain’s
large budget deficit.
The Conservative-led coalition gave
an emergency budget in June, fulfilling
a campaign pledge to do so within 50
days of being elected on May 5.

Giant Boulder Covering
Entrance To Burial Site
SCOTTISH bistro owners who were curious
about a large boulder that dominated the
garden of their restaurant and holiday chalet
rentals property in south Ronaldsay in the
Orkneys, finally got round to investigating
the strange rock last month. Hamish Mowatt
pushed a piece of wire under the eight foot
slab of stone and realized there was some-
kind of small opening or cavern beneath. He
widened the hole and lowered in a camera
where the full discovery came in to view. It
was an ancient burial site, with a number of
skulls and body remains scattered across
the floor amongst some pottery shards.
Archeologists who were brought to the site,
soon identified it as a Neolithic grave dated
from some 5,000 years ago.
Julie Gibbon, the Orkney county archeolo-
gist called it a “significant find,” and is pres-
suring Historic Scotland to do an immediate
and full excavation of the site which is in
danger of being washed away now that the
tomb has been opened.
Mowatt and his partner Carole Fletcher
admitted to being rather shaken and were a
little put off that one of the skulls appeared
to be looking straight back at them as they
focused in with the camera. The pair is very
excited about the discovery and eager to
learn more. “It isn’t everyday you find some-
thing like this,” said the Bistro owners.
Letters From Forbidden Love
Affair Found 66 Years Later
IT WAS an old fashioned romance that blos-
somed just after the war with parlour maid
Winnie Pettinger accepting the attentions of
Eric Pashley, a gardener at Thoresby Hall
in Nottinghamshire. He was not allowed in
the house, but they exchanged letters any
means they could and the relationship grew
stronger and stronger. When Eric was called
up to do his national service he did not return
to his old gardening job. He never forgot
Winnie, however, and the pair were married
soon after his demob. The couple went on
to have five children, 11 grandchildren, and
five great grandsons.
As for the letters that they exchanged all
those years ago, Eric kept them in an old tin
in the gardening shed, but the couple figured
they had long gone. Today, Thoresby Hall
now is the Thoresby Hall Hotel, and a recent
rummage through an old gardening shed by
employees produced that old tin and a pile of
love letters. The Pashleys were traced to their
home in the Vale of Beloir in Lincolnshire, and
those long lost love letters written some 66
years ago were presented to them during a
special family gathering.
The couple are now in their 80s. Eric
remembers fondly that he and his muddy
boots were never allowed in the house, and
he used to dangle letters through an open
window that either other staff or Winnie
would retrieve.
Flashing Jogger Stopped For
An Unexpected ‘Bite’
COTSWOLD police are looking for a flasher
with a nasty dog bite on his forearm. An un-
named 60-year-old women from Moreton-
in-the-the Marsh, who was walking her pet,
was suddenly startled by an apparent jogger
who suddenly exposed himself; leaving the
dog walker completely stunned. But her little
terrier remained unfazed by the incident,
and leapt at the man, burying his teeth in to
the flasher’s flesh. The man pulled up his
tracksuit bottoms and fled the scene.

and requested that anyone who spotted a
man with a dog bite on his arm should call
the department immediately.
Naughty Practical Joke Ends
In Attack And A Death
A NIGHT of drinking and revelry ended in
disaster for two neighbours in Rochdale.
Urinating through a letterbox in to the hallway
of Michael Williams’ home, was thought to
be just a practical joke by Anthony Kershaw.
But his neighbour was outraged to see his
home defiled however, and grabbing a
kitchen knife, opened the door and attacked
the man outside. Anthony Kershaw, 25, died
later that night of his injuries.
At Manchester Crown Court, Michael
Williams, 53, was sentenced to five years
in jail, after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
The court heard that the Smallbridge council
estate where the incident took place, was
out of control and many residents were
frightened to go out at night because of
gangs of noisy teenagers. Defender Andrew
O’Byrne, QC, read a series of recent police
and council reports regarding the dead man
and the estate, but Mr Justice Keith, was
adamant and told the defendant,” You were
responsible for his death, however badly he
was behaving on the night.”
Fraudulent Claims By
Teaching Assistant Exposed
– Payment Sought
BARNSLEY County Council is suing a teacher
who had remained on full pay disability for a
period of six years. Anna Yerrakalva claims
a heavy teaching assistant had an epileptic
fit in 2002, and fell on her causing a series
of injuries that prevented her from working
at the Dearne Carrfield Primary School
in Bolton-on-Dearne, Yorkshire. She was
paid £30,000 a year in disability pay, even
though the school denied the incident never
happened. At an enquiry in Sheffield, it was
revealed that an assistant did have a fit, but
Yerrakalva, 57, was not involved and the
investigation ruled that the teacher had not
told the truth. The teacher briefly returned to
work, but was involved in a bus accident in
2004, and had not been in the classroom
since. She was finally sacked last year and
the Council is seeking £100,000 in reim-
bursement legal costs. The teacher entered
the tribunal with a walking stick, and claims
the council have prevented her from returning
to work. She is due to give evidence when the
investigation continues later next year.
Stephen Poxton, the head-teacher at the
primary school, confirmed the long running
dispute had cost close to £300,000, and had
been a tremendous strain on the school’s
finances.
Frank Makes Guinness Book
With His Long Cucumber
THE newly minted 2011 edition of the Guin-
ness Book of Records, has Frank Dimmock
of Oxfordshire, as having grown the world’s
longest cucumber, after having producing
a specimen with a length of 41¼ inches.

Pearce from Cambridgeshire recently grew
two big monster cukes and says if they’d
held the printing of the Guinness Book off
by a month, her name would be in print
instead. She planted her lengthy vegetables
in early May, and by August had a 47 inch
cuke that looked like a world champion. But
the cucumber fell off the vine, and before
she could get the length verified by Guin-
ness, the vegetable started to rot. However,
she had another tuber at the ready, this one
measures just over 42 inches and is indeed
a world-beater.
She hopes a verification by a local
horticulturist will eventually put her in the
Guinness Book, and is very disappointed that
her extra-ordinary long cucumber missed the
publication this year.
Overweight Debbie Breaks
Fairground Ride
HOLIDAYMAKER Debbie Bower is a big girl,
but the 252lb mother of two, was having a
great vacation at the Butlins Holiday Camp
in Minehead, until an accident on the splash
waterworld chute made her realize she was
carrying too much weight. The water on the
water slide suddenly stopped flowing as
the jets malfunctioned, stranding her and
her friend in a rubber dinghy that would not
move. When Debbie attempted to walk the
100 feet to the slide exit, she slipped on her
back, and it took three fire engines and two
ambulances to strap her to a spinal board and
bring her out safely. Butlins later acknowl-
edged that there was a weight limit for the
ride, but staff had obviously not wanted to
embarrass larger riders.
Debbie, 35, admitted she was a bit bat-
tered and bruised, and says she’ll never
take a water-chute ride again. She admitted
it was a big blow to her pride to be the
helpless centre of attention and its time to
go on a diet.
“If anything is going to make me lose a
few pounds, its that experience,” she told a
local Sun reporter.
Rare Naked Painting Of Sean
Connery Turns Up In Scotland
A NAKED oil painting of Sir Sean Connery,
has surfaced amongst the belongings of
a retired Edinburgh art teacher who died
recently. Rab Webster never sold or exhibited
any of his paintings, but loved to indulge his
passion for the fine arts. Sean Connery was
an actor struggling to make financial ends
meet as a youngster in 1950-51, and earned
extra money posing as a nude model for
students at the Edinburgh College of Art. Rab
Webster was a student at the time himself,
but never realized that the naked man he
was painstakingly painting would turn out
to be one of the biggest box office draws in
cinema history.
The family is looking to put Webster’s
paintings on display in an exhibition (the Con-
nery painting too) in Selkirk, as the conclu-
sion is that that the former art teacher does
have talent. No-one is sure how much the
oil of the former naked James Bond is worth,
but the thinking is that it’s highly collectable.
The artist often recalled his time painting the
actor, and said the Scottish thespian was
not talkative or chatty, and regarded it as
just another job.
New Breed Of Black Squirrels
Sighted All Over The South
BLACK squirrels are causing alarm in
Cambridge. Rumours of their aggressive
behaviour is put down to their high tes-
tosterone levels. No-one is sure how the
black mutants, nicknamed “Ninjas,” who
have all the characteristics of a regular grey
squirrel, except colour, have evolved. One
particular brave, black creature was seen
jumping and running along the trees within
the City of Cambridge. Sightings have also
occurred in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire,
where wildlife experts predict that the newly
discolored squirrels appear to be establishing
themselves permanently.
Helen McRobie, a local biologist, says
the black and grey squirrels will interbreed
naturally, and the black and brown morphs
will eventually become part of Britain’s rural
landscape.
Old Vase In Estate Fetches
£43m At Auction
A SISTER and nephew who inherited their late
Uncle’s estate in Pinner, North-east London,
were disappointed when estate specialists
who valuated the contents of the house did
not consider an old creaking bookcase as any
thing significant, and decided to get another
opinion. At the second opinion however,
the expert was not concerned about the
bookcase, but interested in the old Asian
vase that rested on top of it. Last month that
old vase sold for £43m at the Bainbridge
Auction House.
It turned out to be a 16-inch Qing dynasty,
Chinese porcelain vase dated between 1735-
96, and specifically made for one of the Qing
Emperors. Auctioneer Peter Bainbridge, got
so excited he broke the gavel as he accepted
the final bid. The successful bidder was an
anonymous buyer from the Chinese main-
land. Incredibly, the Uncle had once taken
it on a television antiques programme some
twenty years ago, and was told it was a con-
vincing fake and just worth a few thousand
pounds. It was expected to fetch around a
million pounds at the tops, but it reached
twenty million in less than two minutes. The
sister and nephew were in shock as the fam-
ily heirloom drew bigger and bigger bids. Its
thought the Uncle, inherited it from his Uncle,
a renowned traveler and explorer in the early
part of the last century.
Welsh Pubs ‘Happy’ To Serve
Obviously Intoxicated Patrons
TRADING Standards officials in the Welsh
counties of Conwy and Denbighshire
recently sent out volunteers posing as
drunks to check if landlords are keeping
the law regarding the selling of alcohol to
inebriates and intoxicants. Under Welsh
law, it is a criminal offence to sell alcohol to
anyone who is drunk or looks impaired. The
volunteers slurred their words, staggered
and swayed, some falling down and some
carrying open bottles of booze as they visited
a variety of pubs and taverns. Only seven out
of the 49 licensed premises visited refused to
serve the play-acting drunks. The offending
pub owners will be forced to attend special

concurred “We were very surprised by
these findings, especially as we’d told our
undercover operatives to inform bar staff that
they had been drinking all day.”
Bank Robbery By Digger
Destabilises Whole Building
MAIDSTONE police are looking for thieves
who not only robbed a bank, but caused the
structural destruction of the actual building.
A Lloyd TSB branch in Loose Road, had its
ATM machine torn from the wall, after rob-
bers borrowed a mechanical digger from
a nearby construction site. The damage
caused the bank to close the branch, as the
building is liable to just collapse. Police are
asking for information about a blue pick-up
that was seen in the vicinity, and is suspected
of carting the machine off.

lost delicacies of traditional British cuisine.
The savoury snack could be found with ease

Don’t Enter The Plea
Unless You Know What The
Consequences Are
IN MARCH 2010, the US Supreme Court
made a landmark decision in Padilla v Ken-
tucky requiring defense attorneys to provide
affirmative advice to noncitizen clients
regarding the immigration consequences of
guilty pleas.
Padilla involved a US veteran of Vietnam
and permanent resident of the US for forty
years who faced deportation after pleading
guilty to transportation of a large amount of
marijuana. In a post-conviction proceeding,
Mr Padilla sought to vacate his plea claiming
that his attorney not only failed to advise him
of immigration consequences prior to his plea
but also told him that he did not have to worry
about immigration consequences because
he had been in the country for so long. In
reality, Mr Padilla’s drug related offense was
an aggravated felony, making his deportation
essentially inevitable.
In reaching its decision, the Court ac-
knowledged that deportation is a vital part
of a noncitizens penalty and may be more
important to such individuals than any jail
sentence that could be imposed. Accord-
ingly, failure to provide active advice on
immigration consequences now constitutes
ineffective assistance of counsel under the
Sixth Amendment of the US Constitution.
The type of advice an attorney is required
to give depends on whether the immigra-
tion consequences of a particular plea is
clear or unclear. When the immigration
consequences are unclear or uncertain, a
defense attorney has no duty to do more
than advise a noncitizen client that pending
charges may carry a risk of negative immi-
gration consequences. On the other hand,
if the immigration consequences are clear,
an attorney has the duty to give correct and
detailed advice about such consequences.
Attorneys may choose to assume that the
immigration consequences are clear and
provide detailed advice in order to avoid a
claim of ineffective assistance.
Whether an attorney provided ineffective
assistance is determined by the two step test
set forth in a prior Supreme Court decision,
Strickland v Washington. Strickland requires
a determination of whether an attorney’s rep-
resentation fell below an objective standard of
reasonableness. This standard is measured
by the professional norms such as the
American Bar Association and National Legal
Aid and Defender Association standards. If
an attorney’s representation is found to be
below this standard, the court moves on to
the second prong of the test which looks at
the prejudicial affect of the representation.
This means a determination of whether there
is a reasonable probability that the result of
the proceeding would have been different had
it not been for the attorney’s representation.

the court that he or she would not have taken
the plea had it not been for the attorney’s rep-
resentation and that the decision would have
been rational under the circumstances.
Padilla is a landmark case for both at-
torneys and noncitizens. Although in many
states, including California, an attorney
previously had the duty to provide advice
regarding immigration consequences, Padilla
now requires active, competent advice and
states that non-advice or silence is insuf-
ficient assistance. A claim for ineffective
assistance for a noncitizen is not limited
to incorrect advice regarding immigration
consequences nor is it any longer enough in
the majority of cases to tell a client that there
may be potential immigration consequences.
In order to ensure proper advice according to
Padilla, attorneys must now inquire about the
immigration status of their client, investigate
and understand immigration consequences
and actively provide correct advice.
For noncitizens, the Padilla decision
ensures that they are provided with advice
on potential immigration consequences and
allows them to use such advice to make an
informed decision on whether to enter a plea
and also negotiate a plea that has minimal or
no impact on their immigration status. Re-
quiring attorneys to understand and advise on
potential immigration consequences allows
defense attorneys to discuss immigration
consequences in the plea bargaining process
thereby allowing prosecutors and defendants
to reach agreements that better satisfy the
interests of both parties. In some instances,
negotiating a plea for one less day in jail can
make the difference in whether a noncitizen
qualifies for any relief from removal or is
subject to mandatory detention while removal
proceedings are pending.

says a formal partition of Cyprus should
be considered if current peace talks fail to
agree a reunification plan.

shell, a couple of old faces turn up in the
Square: Kat and Alfie Moon. It seems things
haven’t been going too well since Alfie
carried Kat off, barefoot, in the Christmas
Eve snow, in a convertible, to drive across
America several years ago. But we saw that
coming (ie; how was he even going to cross
the Atlantic in that thing?) But in any event,
they return, separately. Kat returns and Alfie
comes looking for her, having just been re-
leased from prison to find her pregnant with
his cousin’s baby.
It takes a lot to win her back. For starters,
she fears he won’t accept raising another
man’s child. He swears he will. She gives
him an ultimatum to show he can take care
of them and so he buys the Vic from Phil.
Actually, he tells Kat he bought it, when
he’s really only renting it. He oversees the
renovation, and the Vic re-opens with Kat
and Alfie living upstairs and a hideous new,
painted Queen Vic bust sitting on the bar (the
old one apparently melted in the fire). And he
asks Kat to renew their wedding vows and
she agrees, but there’s a glitch. Ronnie and
Jack plan their wedding for the same day as
Alfie and Kat. . . .
Across the Square . . . Jane has been
syphoning off money from Ian’s businesses
into her own account so she can make a run
for it, but he catches her, so she gives him a
cover story (he buys) that she was saving to
take him to Paris. Now she’s stuck spending
a romantic weekend in Paris, and he’s so
touched, he wants her to adopt Bobby . . .
Janine isn’t happy to find out that new hubby
is Stacy’s baby daddy and she wants to do
something about it: She tries to kidnap baby
Lily, but fails when Ryan takes her back.
But this isn’t over . . . Vanessa’s husband
is now harrassing her by vandalizing Max’s

TV Reality Shows Reshaping
Our British Culture
THE reality show is thriving on British TV.
ITV’s flagship Saturday night blockbuster,
The X Factor, shows no sign of losing its
appeal. Indeed, it occupies vast stretches of
prime-time weekend viewing and regularly at-
tracts audiences of upwards of ten million.
It is now in its seventh series, taking over
from Pop Idol which ran for two series but
was scrapped because Simon Cowell wanted
to profit more fully from what he considered
was his programme. Pop Idol may have been
throttled here in the UK but it is still going
strongly throughout the rest of the civilised
world where over 50 versions survive in 110
countries.
The numbers of people auditioning for
X Factor in the past seven years by my
reckoning add up to three-quarters of a mil-
lion. An astonishing figure which gives a fair
indication of the extent of self-delusion in
our population.
Perhaps as worrying as those statistics is
the effect that X Factor and other so-called
reality programmes is having on our society
and culture.
WHOOPING
One of the things we Brits used to find
galling was the manic whooping and shouting
of American audiences. To us, raised on un-
derstatement, there was something disturb-
ing about mindless screeching, hooting and
high-fiving. Yet now it is common-place.
To listen to competitors on any TV tal-
ent competition or game show is to have
your ears constantly affronted by cheering,
whistling and stamping. What on earth has
happened? How can anyone hear, let alone
appreciate, someone singing against such a
wall of noise?
One assumes that a television studio is
fitted with sound systems that subdue the
noise to be broadcast so within that setting
the uproar must be deafening. On The X
Factor a singer only has to open his mouth
for the audience to dissolve into rapturous
applause. Should his voice then climb up the
scales, rapture turns into delirium and thence
into sheer ecstasy.
CRITICISM
We then have to listen to the verdicts of
the judges. The slightest criticism attracts
massed jeers, particularly if the judge hap-
pens to point out that the singing, as is
invariably the case, is flat or off-key. Thus the
judge prudently eschews anything negative in
favour of a verdict of “fantastic!”, “stunning!”
or “you really nailed that!” safe in the knowl-
edge that the phone-in verdicts provide their
own final judgements on the contestant’s
quality or lack of it.
All of the judges at some time or another,
probably every time they open their mouths,
resort to what has now become a time-
hallowed cliché: “This is what The X Factor is
all about.” I’m not quite sure what that means
but it appears to condone the feeblest efforts
of the minimally talented contestant. It’s a line

John Davis, 50, who has a Boeing
747 flight simulator in his house, is
planning the voyage to raise money
for charity. He will fly over the Alps,
navigate his way over the sand dunes
of the Sahara, and cross the Pacific and
Atlantic oceans.
Mr Davis built his £18,000 Boeing 747-
400 simulator in his spare bedroom.
“I’ve always been interested in planes
and I dreamt of becoming a pilot from
a very young age – but I was never any
good at maths, so this is the next best
thing,” said Davis, from Coventry.
He and eight ‘crew’ plan to fly
around the world to raise money for
Warwickshire and Northamptonshire
Air Ambulance.

There follows a
day where telephone
votes are solicited. In 2008, over 16 million
votes were cast throughout the entire series.
Sixteen million!
PAUSE
Then there comes the moment when the
least successful competitor is evicted or
ejected. This now has to be imbued with
its special drama, an entirely concocted
one created by the use of the pause. The
endless pause that stretches deep into the
night. The cameras play on the anxious
faces, switching from one to the other as the
tension mounts and the audience screams its
favourite’s name or brays for the blood of its
hoped-for victim.
This artificial pause is one of my biggest
bugbears. It has reached the stage where the
announcement of anything must be preceded
by a twenty second pause. I can just about
live with its absurd attempt to create tension
and the sheer waste of time on independent
television since we are not paying for it. I totally
resent it when the BBC spends the licence pay-
ers’ money using the same gimmick.
Do you remember when the Olympic
Games were awarded to London back on
July 6, 2005? Jacques Rogge simply said
“The Games . . . are awarded to the city of
London”. No pause, no fuss – yet that was
an important announcement.
There is another side to this and it is that
what the competitors seek is celebrity, con-
fident in the knowledge that this will change
their lives for ever. Never again will they have
to work for a living or face the consequences
of a youth spent in idleness. No, now it will
all fall into their laps. They have won life’s

lottery. So they think.
CELEBRITY
And for every million celebrity seekers,
there are a couple of thousand already fa-
mous who seek to reinforce their celebrity by
appearing on TV programmes with “celebrity”
in the title.
The BBC’s most popular show at present
is Strictly Come Dancing, an endless com-
petition pairing celebrities with professional
dancers. I’m not quite sure what the “strictly”
actually means since the celebrity dancers
are only strictly seeking more fame and a
few extra quid.
This show has the same ingredients
as The X Factor with delirious audiences,
self-important judges, telephone votes and
the vital minute-long pause before the loser
is ejected.
TALENTED
There is, happily, an element of bloody-
mindedness in the voting patterns. Each year
a little sub-section of the voting public decide
to favour some utterly talentless character.
The phenomenon is hard to explain. Last
year’s X Factor finalists featured Irish twins
whose most obvious talent was an inability
to sing in tune or dance in rhythm. Currently,
there is a Brazilian male who makes no pre-
tence about being able to sing and merely
moves roughly in time with a large group of
scantily-clad females.
In the BBC’s dance offering, an elderly
reporter John Sergeant did so well in 2008
despite every indication to the contrary that he
eventually withdrew. He withdrew he said the
show was supposed to encourage dancing
not take the mickey out of it. Currently this
role is being played by an elderly lumpen
politician, Ann Widdecombe. Her sole recom-
mendation appears to be the ludicrous figure
she cuts. Whether she can ultimately survive
as a serious politician remains to be seen but
these days I wouldn’t bet against it.

Hit Scientists For Six
BRITISH scientists say a species of bush-
cricket has the biggest testicles of any
creature on Earth – proportionately.
The bushcricket’s testicles account
for up to 14 percent of its body weight
– equivalent to a human with testicles
weighing 11lbs each.
Karim Vahed of the University of
Derby and his team began their studies
by measuring the testicle size of 21 spe-
cies of bushcrickets, reported the BBC.
They found that one species – Platy-
cleis affinis – far surpassed the previous
record for the proportionally largest
testicles.
The previous holder was a species of
fruit fly – Drosophila bifurca – whose
testicles to body weight ratio has been
recorded as 10.6 percent.
However, a study of the bushcricket’s
mating strategies revealed they released
only small amounts of sperm at each
mating. That suggests the big testes
are for mating with many females, not
producing competitive volumes of sperm
for each encounter.
“Males with bigger testicles are actu-
ally producing smaller amounts,” Dr
Vahed told BBC News.
“This very much favours the alter-
native hypothesis: that it’s about the
number of different females the male can
fertilise, rather than getting a greater
success per female.”
New Election In UK
Dirty Tricks Case
Is Delayed
THE HOUSE of Commons speaker says
a new election won’t be held in a parlia-
mentary district at the center of a dirty
tricks scandal until an appeal in the case
is heard.
Judges ruled last month that Labour
Party lawmaker Phil Woolas had violated
election law by falsely accusing an op-
ponent of winning support from Muslim
extremists.
Woolas, an ex-immigration minister,
was stripped of the Oldham East and
Saddleworth district, in northern England,
and suspended from the Labour Party fol-
lowing the verdict.
Commons Speaker John Bercow said
that no new election will be held until any
planned appeal is heard.
Woolas, who won the district by a tiny
margin of 103 votes, is expected to take his
case to Britain’s Court of Appeal.

CHEER UP Britain! The weather isn’t
that bad.
British officials said last month they will
start measuring national well-being in ad-
dition to gauging more traditional data like
income levels and fear of crime.
The new plan is part of an attempt to
measure national happiness levels that
had been proposed by Prime Minister
David Cameron during the general election
campaign earlier this year.
It is part of a “science of happiness”
movement that has taken root in several
other countries, including France and Can-
ada, as officials and academics study the
failure of rising living standards in recent
decades to be accompanied by a similar
rise in personal contentment.
National Statistician Jil Matheson said
she is “pleased to be taking forward work
on the measurement of national well-
being” as part of the move beyond surveys
based only on numerical economic data.
RECOGNITION
“There is growing international recog-
nition that to measure national well-being
and progress there is a need to develop
a more comprehensive view, rather than
focusing solely on gross domestic prod-
uct,” she said.
Downing Street said that an announce-
ment on the timing of the national survey
can be expected soon. The questions are
expected to be formulated by Matheson
in the coming weeks for inclusion in a
planned national survey to be held early
next year.
Richard Layard, an emeritus professor
at the London School of Economics who
has contributed to government studies on
the best ways to measure subjective well-
being, said the new government approach
is a big step forward.
“I think it’s wonderful,” he said. “It’s
something I and others have been advocat-
ing for some time. It’s based on the idea
that unless you measure the right things,
you won’t do the right things.”
He said government surveys that focus
only on economic advancement leads
people to be obsessed with their income
rather than other factors that can lead to
happy, productive lives.

We picked up Betsy and her boss Jane and
had dinner at Ye Olde Kings Head in Santa
Monica. Betsy had lived several blocks from
the Kings Head back in the 70s so we had to
detour to see her old neighborhood as well as
Venice Beach. Then a quick trip back to LAX
where traffic wasn’t too bad, surprisingly!
Had a 4am wake up call the following day
to get me downtown LA at the convention
center for a 7am breakfast and press confer-
ence to launch this years LA Auto Show. Met
up with Car Man Phil to see old friends like
Denis Glavis of www.morganwest.com This
years show seemed to have a lot more energy
and definitely more press coverage than last
year, which leads me to believe the economy
is slowly starting to rebound.

one of the greatest songs of the last Century,
A Whiter Shade of Pale, it didn’t seem to mat-
ter that we couldn’t understand what “tripping
the light fandango” meant. It was just one of
those songs that stay with you forever.
That was the song I would hear in the
Channel Island of Jersey through France,
Spain to Gibraltar while sailing to Barbados,
the Bahamas, and then Florida in 1968. My
brother Stephen flew to America to join me
for the summer in the Adirondacks in New
York state and the one concert we could
both agree on to go see . . . Procol Harum at
the Filmore East in New York City. A Whiter
Shade of Pale, Conquistador and A Salty
Dog was to become part of the must play
list here in the US for the next 40+ years.
So when the opportunity presented itself for
the very rare occasion to see them play at
the Orpheum Theatre in LA and the Lobero
in Santa Barbara, we couldn’t resist.
The intimacy of the Lobero Theatre only
enhanced the experience of the show. One
not to be missed if you get the opportunity.
Karen and I joined the after show party, which
I now realize was why I’ve spent so much
time with British Rock and Rollers, besides
them being so artistic and creative.
Gary Brooker is a real character. He’s the
voice and plays piano and founder of Procol
Procol Harum band members at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara:
Josh Phillips, Matt Pegg, Geoff Whitehorn, Gary Brooker, and Geoff Dunn.

organist and from Thames Ditton. Geoff
Whitehorn is lead guitar from Gravesend,
Kent. 19 years with the band. Geoff Dunn
on drums and Matt Pegg guitar, made for a
very memorable evening.

service. Starting March 16, 2011, Delta will
have flights to London from Miami, Tampa,

only flies Virgin, my darling airline, but more

From Miami there will be new Delta daily
non-stop service to Heathrow. Smart move
by Delta, recognizing the demand by South
Florida’s huge British community.

on the food side. Elwoods, one block north
of the Inter-Continental Hotel. has already
developed a busy following of local Anglos,
I observed, relieved to find a hangout where
the language is English. (Miami is the only
city in America where Anglos are the official
minority). British crew working on the nearby
Port of Miami cruiseships spend off-time there
too. Elwoods has British beers, bangers and
mash, fish and chips, and English football
playing on the TV. So if you find yourself
downtown, do seek it out. Lewis is truly
born to the role of Mein Host and will pay
you rapt attention.

Want A Welfare Check? Sweep A Street First

BRITAIN’S jobless could be asked to
sweep streets, help out in community
centers or mow lawns at public parks in
return for their welfare check under plans
to toughen the country’s benefits regime,
government ministers said last month.
Under planned reforms, the long-term
unemployed would be ordered to regularly
carry out four weeks of unpaid work to
remain eligible for a £65 per week welfare
payment.
Those who refuse to take placements –
which would include manual labor tasks
like garbage collection and gardening –
would temporarily lose their benefits.

With Ex-Guantanamo Detainees
HEFTY settlement payments have been
agreed with a group of former Guantanamo
Bay detainees who sued the government for
alleged complicity in their torture – one of
the first big pay-outs stemming from the
US-led war on terrorism.
After months of legal wrangling, Brit-
ain’s spy agencies chose to settle the lawsuit
to avoid a pricey and prolonged court case
in which open testimony from secret agents
could have jeopardized national security, a
British government official told The As-
sociated Press on condition of anonymity
last month.
At least seven former detainees would
receive payments and at least one man
would receive more than £1m, according
to a second source who has seen details of
the settlement and spoke on condition of
anonymity because lawyers agreed that the
details would be kept confidential.

torturing detainees themselves, but former

THE WEBSITE of Britain’s Royal Navy
was shut down November 8 after it was
compromised by hackers.
A posting said the site was shut for
“essential maintenance” and asked users
to come back later.
The Navy said in a statement that the
website’s security had been breached over
the weekend but that no “malicious dam-
age” had been found.
“The Royal Navy website has been tem-
porarily suspended,” the statement read.

In interviews last month, former US
President George Bush boasted that he
authorized some techniques – which others
have labeled torture – for the interrogation
of suspected terrorists, and that the methods
yielded intelligence that saved lives.
Britain has long opposed some of the
interrogation techniques that Bush admin-
istration officials authorized in the so-called
war on terror after the September 11 terror-
ist attacks in 2001.
Allegations of torture and abuse have
been widespread among many Guantanamo
detainees who were held in Afghanistan and
other countries before being sent to the US
prison camp in Cuba.
But the most detailed account of abuse
came from former detainee Binyam Mo-
hamed, who alleged that Britain was aware
that the CIA sent him to be interrogated in
Morocco, where his genitals were sliced
with a scalpel.

is not for ev-
erybody. A few
avid readers
and intellects
will salivate all over Jacobson’s seamless
sentences, gifted grammar and perfect para-
graphs. They will applaud how he captures
the essence of jewishness with exquisite de-
tailed precision, and join him in agreeing that
all we essentially seek in our lives, despite our
varied faiths and individual journeys, is love
and purpose. Having said this, there will defi-
nitely be a few amongst us who would prefer
taking out their contact lenses after handling
a red hot chili pepper instead of turning the
page for even more philosophically perfect,
“I will answer each question with a question
then another question” dialogue that drives
the rest of us to drink, then bed. I have to say,
I was not entirely wooed by this peacock.
It is however an important novel that brings
attention to the Israel/Palestine problem.
Jacobson’s three main characters, Treselove,
Finkler and Libor all have unique perspectives
on Israel, the Zionists and what it means to be
Jewish. Finkler is a member of a group called
the Ashamed Jews who abhor the current
events in the Middle East and reject Israel’s
right to Palestine. Libor, a recently widowed
ninety-year-old Czech Jew, feels that to be
Jewish is to support Israel in everything it
does. Then there is Treslove, an anxious lost
soul who although not Jewish is fascinated
by the traditions and idiosyncrasies of this
ancient culture that seems to give “Finklers”
– Treslove’s word for Jewish people – some-
thing he lacks. There are some interesting
conversations shared among these three
friends. Conversations which certainly make
you think but not before a gazillion questions
are asked and many bends are rounded on
the cobbled road. For me, the story itself,
did not move the novel forward and unless
the reader is prepared to sit back on a cozy
Chesterfield with some brandy and savor only
Jacobson’s unquestionable gift for writing,
you might actually find this boring.
That said, I am on the fence with this one.
Jacobson brings to the table different points
of view and new ideas (check), and his writ-
ing is impeccable (double check). In spite of
this the book was repetitious and his award
winning penmanship might have sabotaged
his characters a little as they all began to
sound the same. One voice, Jacobson’s.
making them all pastel smudged together.
The Finkler Question felt like a very interest-
ing discussion. Over dinner this conversation
would enthrall me. As a book the conversa-
tion just went on a little too long.

‘Gay’ Partnership

TOM FREEMAN and Katherine Doyle are
in love and want to tie the knot – but they
don’t want to get married.
The 26-year-old Londoners think they
should be allowed to have a civil partner-
ship, a form of legal union available in
Britain only to same-sex couples.
Last month, after having their applica-
tion to form a civil partnership rejected by
officials at their local town hall in Isling-
ton, north London, they said they will go
to court to win the right. They are being
backed by gay rights activists, who hope a
ruling that allows straight couples the right
to a civil partnership would mean, in turn,
that gay couples have the right to wed.
“The titles of husband and wife and all
the things that pop into people’s heads when
you say you’re getting married don’t appeal
to us,” said Doyle, a student. “In our day-to-
day life we feel like civil partners – we don’t
feel like husband and wife, and we want the
government to recognize that.”

“We think it’s time there was one law
for everyone,” said activist Peter Tatchell,

TOYOTA recalled 12,000 British cars
last month over a software fault which the
company said could make it harder to steer
over road safety strips.
The Toyota Motor Corp’s British arm
said that the voluntary recall affects iQ
vehicles produced over the past two years.
It said the problem has only been seen “in
very specific circumstances” in Japan, and
that no accidents related to the issue have
been reported.
Toyota has suffered a series of recent
problems which have dented the public
confidence in the automaker.
Hundreds of lawsuits were filed against
Toyota after the company started recalling
millions of vehicles because of accelera-
tion problems in several models and brake
defects with the Prius hybrid.
Toyota has recalled over 10 million
vehicles worldwide over the last year.

license. “But particularly because of my
Christian faith, it’s marriage that I want.”

I STILL go all out for tradition each Christ-
mas and have always made my own
Christmas puddings, fruit cake and mince-
meat. Usually I try to make them several
weeks before the day, as all improve with
standing and maturing a bit. However, I
now have to set my sights lower in quan-
tity, as we downsized and moved earlier
this year. Although my kitchen is smaller
it is still serviceable but I don’t have the
extra fridge and space I used to keep the
items in. Plus with our warm weather
I can’t leave anything out of the fridge.
However a couple of friends have already
said I can use some of their fridge space .
. . hmmmm, can I trust them!!!!??
So I am in the process of making some
more mincemeat – I have never liked US
style mincemeat all apples and cinnamon
to me, and no real substance. Making
from scratch really isn’t that hard, and well
worth the effort. Originally it was made with
real meat, and goes back to the 1600’s.
Recipes have now evolved into using suet
. . . and that isn’t easy to obtain any more
either. I never thought I would have to find
a local European style butcher and order
it specially! In the UK we used Atora suet,
but since the mad cow disease period it is
not available over here. If you cannot find
it at all, you can use a mix of shortening
and lard. If you find a butcher for the suet,

laborious trying to grate by hand.
I do also prefer to use short crust pastry,
as the fat in the mincemeat makes it rich
enough. When using it bake at 350 degrees
F, for about 20-30 minutes, depending if
you make the tarts or pie.
This recipe is from an old English recipe
and I have made it for 45 years now, so I
think I can say it works! I hope you enjoy
my version.
Mincemeat:
1/2 cup finely minced suet
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
3/4 cup raisins
3/4 cup sultanas (golden raisins)
2/3 cup finely chopped candied peel
1/3 cup finely chopped almonds
2 small tart cooking apples (I prefer to
use granny smiths here)
Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup brandy
In large bowl combine all the ingredients
and mix well. Stir in the brandy gradually,
cover and set aside in a cool place, at least
one month if possible. Check occasionally
and add more brandy and/or rum ¼ cup at
a time so the fruits absorb it all. A couple
of days before using it, add enough brandy
to make it nice and moist
(If you choose not to use alcohol, or-
ange juice can be used, but be sure to keep
it refrigerated.) It will keep well for several
months, and can also be frozen

Dickie Still Kicking About At A Mere 75
BRITAIN’S oldest footballer, it is as-
sumed, is still playing regularly at 75
years old – Dickie Borthwick has been
playing the game he loves for 63 years.
Having just celebrated his 75th birth-
day, he will soon be lacing up his boots,
pulling on his shirt and crossing the white
line to play in yet another match.
Dubbed ‘This oldest winger in town’,
Borthwick first took up the game in 1947,
two years after the end of the Second
World War.

FRESH OFF a fourth straight sellout at
Wembley Stadium, the NFL vice president
of international business is optimistic the
league will be playing multiple regular-
season games in Britain.
The San Francisco 49ers rallied to beat
the Denver Broncos 24-16 last month in
the NFL’s fourth regular-season game in
London. And with a more than 84,000 fans
packed into Wembley, Chris Parsons has
already started thinking of ways to keep
the momentum going.
Parsons says the NFL will talk to own-
ers in January or February about a game
next year. But he says the decision could
be delayed by the collective bargaining
agreement talks.
“The CBA negotiation adds a level
of complexity to that planning process,
which we have to then manage around,”
Parsons said in a phone interview. “That
may require us to be a little bit patient go-
ing forward in terms of how we move that
forward, but whether it’s in one year or two
years, we will be playing multiple games,
I believe, in the UK market.”

OLYMPIC organizers have launched a
$217m project to boost sports partici-
pation in Britain in conjunction with
the 2012 London Games.
The “Places, People and Play” ini-
tiative will be funded by the national
lottery.
London organizers promised to
inspire a new generation of Britons to
play sports when they successfully bid
for the Olympics in 2005.
The plan announced last month
aims to reach two million people and
upgrade sports facilities and local
sports clubs across the country. Of-
ficials will recruit, train and assign
40,000 sports leaders to help organize
grass-roots projects.
The project is led by Sport England
and the British Olympic Association,
with the backing of London 2012

“I though it was an honor to play in
Wembley Stadium,” Broncos receiver
Brandon Lloyd said of the new stadium
on the same site of the one that hosted the

final. “I loved the fact that the support was
strong and seems like the fans are very
knowledgeable on what was going on out
there on the football field.”
Besides talk of adding a second game
to the overseas schedule, possibly in
Cardiff, Wales, or Edinburgh, Scotland,
the NFL has been also been considering
the prospect of creating a franchise based
in London.
But, according to Parsons, it won’t be
anytime soon. “The franchise is a nice goal
and I think it’s a tremendous stake in the
ground and strategic vision that we can
strive for, but I think we’ve also said there
are several steps ahead of that that we’d
want to make sure we get right before we
made that leap,” Parsons said.

Football Team

IT’S HARDLY on the same level as the
takeovers of Liverpool or Manchester
United.
But American tycoon Robert Rich
Jr’s investment in an amateur soccer
team in northeast England has fans of
Bedlington Terriers dreaming of the
big time.
“Mr Rich said he wants to help
the underdogs and he wants to help
Bedlington achieve what they are ca-
pable of,” Terriers club secretary David
Collop told The Associated Press last
month. “This is like a fairytale come
true with him getting involved.”
Bedlington is nowhere near the stat-
ure of Liverpool, which was bought by
the owners of the Boston Red Sox last
month for $476m. And it’s hardly on a
par with Manchester United, which was
bought in 2005 by the Glazer family, the
owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
in a leveraged buyout worth $1.4bn.
Instead, the tiny club way up north is
in the ninth tier of English soccer and
only five years ago nearly went out of
business. Now the club has a wealthy
benefactor in Rich, a 69-year-old busi-
nessman from Buffalo, NY, who owns
three minor league baseball teams.
“Could the Bedlington Terriers
become an international brand – even
an international icon?” Rich said in

answering his own question. “We’re
having fun.
“I’ve been in baseball for a long time,
so I know the fun you can have with a
business. But we’re not in that – we’re
helping people who need help.”
FORTUNE
Rich is No 488 on the Forbes rich
list after making his $2bn fortune in
the food manufacturing and catering
empire. He hasn’t bought Bedlington,
but he has become the shirt sponsor and
lavished the club with a new electronic
scoreboard valued at $47,000.
Rich’s association with Bedlington,
a town devastated by the collapse of the
coal industry in the 1980s, charts back to
last year. He discovered he had ancestral
links to the town, which is located 10
miles north of Newcastle and bears
similarities to his native Buffalo.
For a Christmas present last year, his
wife bought him the title “Lord of Bed-
lington” and he soon became interested
in the local team, into which he is put-
ting a tiny part of his vast fortune.
Rich is planning to sell Bedlington
shirts around the stadiums of his base-
ball teams – the Buffalo Bisons, the
Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the
Jamestown Jammers – with the aim of
making them a cult item for American
sports fans.
Rich said: “I’m still learning about
British football, and I understand that if
they do well on the field it can move up
in divisions. If this is the dream the com-
munity has, I want to help. I don’t want to
become an owner, I just want to help.”

banned for three matches after accepting a
Football Association charge of violent con-
duct last month.

Pedersen in the stomach during a match,

ground.
The 28-year-old Englishman received an
automatic three-game ban after accepting
the charge, meaning he will miss the Premier
League games against Fulham, Bolton and
Chelsea.
Barton has previously stubbed a lit cigar
in a youth player’s eye, assaulted a 15-year-
old fan, been fined and suspended while at
Manchester City for assaulting a teammate
and spent 77 days in jail in 2008 for another
attack.
Everton Plan Development
EVERTON appears to be committed to staying
at Goodison Park after it was granted planning
permission to build a new store and offices
at its stadium.
Everton says its sponsors will pay the
entire £9m cost of a four-floor development
including a shop selling replica shirts and
other club merchandise, a club museum
and a cafe.
Everton chief executive Robert Elstone
says “the new building is an exciting phase
in the development of Goodison Park.”
The Liverpool-based club canceled plans
to move to a new stadium outside the city
after the British government denied permis-
sion for the project last year because of fears
it would affect nearby villages.
Robert Pires Signs For Villa
FORMER France midfielder Robert Pires
joined Premier League club Aston Villa last
month after five months without a team.
The 37-year-old Pires, who was in the
France team that won the 1998 World Cup
and the 2000 European Championship,
excelled in a previous stint in England with
Arsenal but was released by Villarreal in the
offseason.
Pires had been keeping fit while he was
without a club by training with Arsenal, where
he won two Premier League titles and three
FA Cups.

construction of a national soccer center will
begin in January, almost a decade after the
plans were first unveiled.
The association announced last month
that the $168m training complex and acad-
emy will help develop young players. That
comes a day after England was outplayed
by France in a 2-1 exhibition loss.
The facility, which looks to emulate
France’s Clairefontaine complex, is expected
to be completed midway through 2012. St
George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent in central
England will have 12 fields – including one
synthetic and indoor – plus sports medicine
and sports science facilities.

Papua New Guinea saved England from the
wooden spoon. Australia beat PNG 42-0,

this season’s Hong Kong champions in the
Asia Trophy next July.
The preseason knockout event will be
held over two match days on July 27 and
30 at Hong Kong Stadium, and is the only
Premier League affiliated tournament played
outside England.
The biannual Asia Trophy was first held in
Kuala Lumpur in 2003 and has since been
staged in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Beijing.
